Cementerio General del Sur || Southern General Cemetery

A raíz de la muerte de un familiar, en el 2015, me tocó ir al Cementerio General del Sur, pues mi familia tenía allí una parcela. En esa oportunidad me tocó ir con un primo y la impresión que nos tocó vivir fue algo fuera de toda lógica.

Es importante explicar que dicho cementerio fue declarado Monumento Histórico de Venezuela, pues, aparte de la cantidad de personalidades enterradas allí, hay algunas criptas y mausoleos que son verdaderas obras de arte.

Sin embargo, lo que encontramos mi primo y yo fue algo aterrador. El cementerio había caído en total abandono y, según algunas fuentes, el 60% de las tumbas habían sido profanadas. En algunos casos para uso en la santería, en otros casos para despojar a los cadáveres de cualquier prenda que pudieran tener. Pero así mismo se robaban los mármoles y cualquier objeto de valor que tuvieran.

En aquella oportunidad uno se encontraba osamentas, tumbas abiertas con esqueletos adentro y un cuadro general propio de una película de terror.

Había sabido por noticias que el gobierno había tomado cartas en el asunto, pero el daño era demasiado grande.

Hace unas semanas me tocó volver para unos trámites por otra parcela y para mi satisfacción, encontré que, en efecto, han empezado a recuperar el lugar. Por supuesto, falta mucho por arreglar y hay muchas cosas que no están bien, pero entiendo que la recuperación total de ese lugar es algo extremadamente costoso y lento.

Ahora es posible, nuevamente, uno quedarse maravillado con algunas de las construcciones. Más allá de eso, es un lugar que habla mucho de la idiosincrasia del venezolano.

Aunque es un lugar que valdría la pena retratar en su totalidad, hoy comparto solo algunas imágenes del sector donde estuve.

Following the death of a relative in 2015, I had to go to the General Cemetery of the South, as my family had a plot there. On that occasion, I went with a cousin, and the impression we got was something beyond all logic.

It is important to note that this cemetery was declared a Historic Monument of Venezuela because, apart from the number of famous people buried there, some of the crypts and mausoleums are true works of art.

However, what my cousin and I found was terrifying. The cemetery had fallen into total disrepair and, according to some sources, 60% of the graves had been desecrated. In some cases, they were used for Santeria rituals, in other cases to strip the corpses of any clothing they might have had. But they also stole the marble and any valuable objects they had.

At that time, one could find skeletons, open graves with skeletons inside, and a general scene straight out of a horror movie.

I had heard on the news that the government had taken action on the matter, but the damage was too great.

A few weeks ago, I had to return to take care of some paperwork for another plot of land, and to my satisfaction, I found that they had indeed begun to restore the place. Of course, there is still a lot to be done and many things are not right, but I understand that the total restoration of this place is extremely costly and slow.

Now it is possible, once again, to marvel at some of the buildings. Beyond that, it is a place that speaks volumes about the idiosyncrasies of Venezuelans.

Although it is a place that would be worth portraying in its entirety, today I am sharing only a few images of the area where I was.
