Storytime: Un día para madrugar y una visita valiente al odontólogo 🦷

¡Hola, hola! Espero que estén pasando un día excelente. Hoy quiero abrir un espacio por aquí para compartirles una anécdota que viví hace poco. Como padres, siempre tenemos una lista eterna de pendientes, y uno que me venía haciendo ruido desde el año pasado era la salud dental de mi hijo. Él está en pleno proceso de mudar sus dientes y, aunque la mayoría ya son los definitivos, tenía una muelita que me estaba preocupando bastante.

Como yo misma pasé por un dolor de muelas hace poco, no quería por nada del mundo que él experimentara ese malestar. Así que me puse las pilas para llevarlo a consulta. En mi estado, contamos con la Fundación El Niño Simón Monagas, un centro que ofrece servicios médicos y odontológicos especializados para niños. Tenía muy buenas referencias de su profesionalismo, así que decidimos ir allí.

La estrategia de las 4:30 de la mañana

Si algo sabía es que para asegurar el cupo hay que madrugar, porque la demanda es alta y atienden a un número limitado de pacientes por día. El año pasado lo intenté un par de veces, pero siempre llegaba tarde y perdíamos el viaje. Esta vez me dije: “A la tercera va la vencida”, y planifiqué todo de forma diferente.

Hello, hello! I hope you are having a great day. Today I want to take a moment to share a story with you about something that happened to me recently. As parents, we always have a never-ending to-do list, and one thing that had been on my mind since last year was my son's dental health. He is in the process of losing his baby teeth, and although most of them are already gone, he had one little tooth that was worrying me quite a bit.
Since I myself had recently experienced a toothache, I didn't want him to go through that discomfort for anything in the world. So I got my act together and took him to the dentist. In my state, we have the Fundación El Niño Simón Monagas, a center that offers specialized medical and dental services for children. I had heard very good things about their professionalism, so we decided to go there.
The 4:30 a.m. strategy
If there was one thing I knew, it was that to secure an appointment, you had to get up early, because demand is high and they only see a limited number of patients per day. Last year, I tried a couple of times, but I always arrived late and we wasted the trip. This time, I said to myself, “Third time's the charm,” and I planned everything differently.

El martes, puse la alarma y a las 4:30 am ya estaba montada en mi scooter lista para arrancar. Mi esposo se quedaría en casa con el niño para llevarlo más tarde en el carro y así no exponerlo al frío de la madrugada en la moto. Les confieso que, a esa hora, la avenida da un poquito de respeto; estaba totalmente sola y yo soy de las que cree en cuentos de camino, así que iba con todos los santos acompañándome y acelerando para llegar rápido.

A pesar de que el trayecto es largo, tardé solo 19 minutos porque la vía estaba despejada y el clima estaba delicioso. Al llegar, ya había 12 personas delante de mí. Me anoté con el número 13 de 30 cupos disponibles. ¡Qué alivio sentí! Sabía que la trasnochada había valido la pena. Apenas me anoté, empezó a llegar muchísima gente; si me tardaba cinco minutos más, me quedo fuera otra vez.

A las 7:00 am ya mi hijo estaba conmigo en la fundación. Lo que más me gustó fue ver lo bien organizada que está la institución. Todo el personal es muy profesional y el ambiente está pensado totalmente para que los niños se sientan cómodos.

On Tuesday, I set my alarm and at 4:30 a.m. I was already on my scooter, ready to go. My husband would stay home with our son to take him later in the car so he wouldn't be exposed to the early morning cold on the motorcycle. I confess that, at that hour, the avenue is a little scary; I was completely alone, and I'm one of those people who believes in road stories, so I was going with all the saints accompanying me and speeding up to get there quickly.

Although it's a long trip, it only took me 19 minutes because the road was clear and the weather was lovely. When I arrived, there were already 12 people ahead of me. I signed up as number 13 out of 30 available spots. What a relief! I knew that staying up late had been worth it. As soon as I signed up, a lot of people started arriving; if I had been five minutes later, I would have been left out again.

First-class care and an exemplary patient

At 7:00 a.m., my son was already with me at the foundation. What I liked most was seeing how well organized the institution is. All the staff are very professional, and the environment is designed to make children feel comfortable.

Aunque Diego iba mentalizado para algo sencillo, la doctora nos explicó que lo ideal era realizar una extracción. Yo me puse súper nerviosa, sentía que el corazón me iba a mil porque pensaba que él se asustaría con la anestesia o el procedimiento. Pero, para mi sorpresa, mi hijo demostró una madurez increíble. Se mantuvo sereno, relajado y en total calma. Yo le sostenía sus manitos mientras la doctora trabajaba con muchísima paciencia y delicadeza.

Al final, la doctora lo felicitó muchísimo. Me causó gracia porque los demás niños salían llorando o gritando, y el mío estaba ahí, lo más tranquilo del mundo, mirando a los demás como diciendo: “¿por qué tanto drama?”. La doctora, encantada con su comportamiento, le dijo que por ser tan valiente, yo debía llevarlo a desayunar a la panadería y darle un helado en la noche.

Satisfecha con el resultado

Salimos de allí muy contentos. Diego, por supuesto, no olvidó las palabras de la doctora y apenas cruzamos la puerta me dijo: “Mamá, recuerda el trato del desayuno”. Terminamos comprando dulces y un desayuno rico, y aunque entre una cosa y otra terminamos gastando bastante, me fui con una satisfacción enorme.

Although Diego was prepared for something simple, the doctor explained that the ideal solution was to extract the tooth. I got really nervous, my heart was racing because I thought he would be scared of the anesthesia or the procedure. But, to my surprise, my son showed incredible maturity. He remained calm, relaxed, and totally at ease. I held his little hands while the doctor worked with great patience and delicacy.

At the end, the doctor congratulated him profusely. I found it funny because the other children were crying or screaming, and mine was there, as calm as can be, looking at the others as if to say, “Why all the drama?” The doctor, delighted with his behavior, told him that because he was so brave, I should take him to the bakery for breakfast and give him ice cream in the evening.

Satisfied with the result

We left there very happy. Diego, of course, did not forget the doctor's words, and as soon as we walked out the door, he said to me, “Mom, remember the breakfast deal.” We ended up buying sweets and a delicious breakfast, and although we ended up spending quite a bit, I left feeling very satisfied.

La atención en la fundación fue excelente, me sentí muy conforme con el trabajo que le hicieron. Ahora ya tengo en agenda volver para el mes de marzo, Dios mediante, para hacerle su limpieza y mantenimiento preventivo. Es un peso que me quité de encima y una tarea menos en mi lista. Da gusto encontrar lugares donde el servicio es tan humano y profesional.

The care at the foundation was excellent, and I was very satisfied with the work they did. Now I have an appointment to return in March, God willing, for cleaning and preventive maintenance. It's a weight off my shoulders and one less task on my list. It's nice to find places where the service is so humane and professional.
