My Step-by-Step Process of Making a Caricature

When I create a caricature, I follow a simple step-by-step process that helps me bring out the personality and unique features of the subject.

PREPARATION

First, I gather all the materials I need—usually a pencil, eraser, paint, and reference images of the person I’m going to draw. Having everything ready helps me stay focused once I begin.

Sketching

Next, I start sketching based on the reference image.
I usually use the grid technique for the face to copy the facial features as precisely as possible. For the background, I draw it freehand and go with the flow—whatever comes to mind. Sometimes, I also follow the client’s request for a specific motif or style they want to see in the caricature. This is one of the most creative and fun parts of the process.

Painting

Once the sketch is done, I move on to painting. This is where I bring the caricature to life by adding color, shading, and depth.
I use poster paint, which is a water-based paint similar to watercolor, but in my observation, it tends to be more vibrant and colorful than watercolor.

Retouching and Final Details

Finally, I add the finishing touches. This includes retouching certain areas and adding small details that enhance the overall character and expression of the caricature.
