Two Special Commitments That Will Change My Life This Year

It is no lie that every day we wake up is a fresh start, a chance to begin again, do things right, and chase our wildest dreams. Still, there is something about a new year that feels like an official return to the drawing board where we carefully map out what the next couple of months should look like for us. Personally, I love the hopeful feeling that comes with a new year, the type that nudges us to set new goals and reminds us that life is not over until it truly is.

Last week, I wrote down three realistic goals I hope to achieve by the end of this year. But when I saw this prompt today, I realized there were a few important commitments I had not yet put into words.

One of them is to be a more present and reliable friend. I value friendships a lot and I am grateful to have a close knit circle of people I can proudly call my friends. These people have stood by me for years, they've accepted me as I am without trying to make me change my personality for anything in the world. Still, I struggle to be present for them in every area. I'm someone who tends to withdraw when life becomes overwhelming. I settle back into my thoughts and take long breaks from social media, creating a distance between my friends and I.

While my reasons for going off the radar may be valid, I have come to realize that it is unfair to those who care about me. Sometimes, my friends simply want a lighthearted conversation or a quick exchange over a chat, and my absence deprives us of those small but meaningful moments. This year, I want to show up more and make life-changing memories with them. I want to be present when they need support and also when they just want to talk and laugh via any messaging platform.

Another goal I have set for myself this year is to learn how to crochet. Last year moved so quickly that I abandoned this skill, even though I was determined to learn it. I got more focused in setting goals than following them through till the end. This year, I want things to be different. I strongly believe in the work of my hands and in my ability to take on challenges, even when they feel difficult or time consuming.

I want to create useful and beautiful clothing accessories with wools and prove to myself that I am capable of everything I think. As someone who spends a lot of time on digital screens, learning an offline, hands-on skill feels like a great decision to make right now. So, I believe crocheting will not only reduce my screen time but also bring calm, healing, and the lost spark of creativity I once had in my life.

I know these commitments will require effort, consistency, and patience with myself, but I am willing to embrace the process with the purest intentions. I hope to return to this post in a year with a smile on my face, proud that I stayed true to my words and grew alongside these goals.

My dear learning a new skill isn't easy, but with determination, you will definitely achieve it. Crotcheting is a beautiful skill that requires patience and commitment. I hope you look back to this post in one year with gratitude and great achievements.
