Sailor moon Crystal – Anime Review (2014) [ENG/ESP]

You know what? I wanted to talk about Sailor Moon this week, since I've been seeing a lot of Sailor Moon merchandise lately, and I found it curious that the art style is more like the 90s version than the 2014 version, the latter being more faithful to the original work. I think the character designs have a lot to do with it, since most people prefer the classic ones, but to avoid going into too much detail, I'll just share my opinions on the two versions and the differences between them, both the ones you find online and my own perspective.
Sailor moon Crystal (美少女戦士セーラームーン Crystal)…
It premiered in 2014 and had several seasons. The first season was divided into two arcs with a total of 26 episodes; the third season (since the second arc is considered the second season) had 13 episodes in total, and there were two movies, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal and Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos. All of them had changes not only in the art style but also in the direction, so I'm not including that part. The studio in charge was Toei Animation, and this magical girl anime falls into the genres of drama, romance, fantasy, comedy, and science fiction.
Regarding the plot…
The story is almost the same as the one we know—no, just kidding, it changes in many aspects, especially with the relationships between the characters. Some who were villains for no reason in the '90s version are something else entirely here. Events didn't happen the same way. Anyway, we have our protagonist, Usagi Tsukino, a somewhat clumsy and crybaby high school girl, who meets a black cat named Luna. Luna reveals to her that she is a Sailor Guardian destined to protect the Earth. Her first mission is simple but vital: to gather four other guardians (Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus) to protect a mysterious princess and an artifact of infinite power called the Silver Crystal.
As the team takes shape, Usagi becomes entangled in a tragic and profound romance with Tuxedo Mask, an enigmatic young man searching for the same crystal. They soon discover that their destinies are not coincidental, but rather the echo of an ancient past in a lunar kingdom destroyed by envy and hatred. More characters are introduced, who will be key to our protagonist's growth.
Personal opinion
I know that I found out at the time that the Sailor Moon story wasn't very faithful to the manga, so when I heard they were going to remake it, following the original work, I was excited. However, the animation at the beginning wasn't to my liking at all; the aesthetic felt flat and very video game-like. And the transformations! 😕 Ugh, no, I thought they were awful. I couldn't keep watching. But, when I saw that after the third season, the character designs improved a lot, I watched all the previous seasons. And well, the story wasn't quite there, though. I did encounter some surprises, though. For example, and SPOILER ALERT, Princess Serena committed suicide when Prince Endymion was killed. Whoa, that was a huge shock.
As I said, after the third season, the animation and art improved significantly, and both movies are even considered to have cinematic-level quality, with vibrant colors and a fluidity that Crystal deserved from day one. As I mentioned, the story is faithful to the manga, which also means there's no filler, making it a shorter and more concise format; I like that in this one, Mamoru (Darien) gains more power and has a much warmer and more protective personality.
One thing that many may not like is its difference from the 90s version. Here, the female friends have more of a bodyguard-like relationship than a true friendship; they don't have those episodes dedicated to their hobbies or personal fears because the script doesn't allow for pauses. Ultimately, I can say that this version is dark fantasy, and many argue that the characters have finally been given justice.
Positive points…
-Faithful to the manga, so its shorter format is smoother to watch.
-Beautiful animation, only from season 3 onwards, but I understand they fixed those details in the Blu-ray version, so that's an extra point for that.
-Usagi and Mamoru's romance feels much more mature.
Negative points…
-The CGI in the early seasons is awful and the design is terrible.
-Emotionally, it's colder, as the secondary characters, especially the girls, lack depth and nuance, losing much of their individual charisma.
-Less Fun Tone.

If you were a fan of the manga and didn't think the 90s version did it justice, while those of us who grew up with that version might find it an abrupt and jarring change in some ways, I don't think it's so bad. I found it to be a much more developed and visually appealing experience, especially with the Sailor Cosmo theme and all that.

Quise hablar de Sailor moon esta semana, ya que he estado viendo como mucho merch de la misma y se me hizo curioso que el arte corresponde más al de la versión de los 90 que la 2014, esta última que fue más como fiel a la obra original. Yo creo que es el diseño de los personajes que influye mucho en ello, pues la mayoría prefiere al clásico, pero para no entrar más en contexto, les dejaré mis opiniones de la misma y las diferencias que hay una con la otra, tanto la que se consigue en internet como desde mi punto de vista.
Sailor moon Crystal (美少女戦士セーラームーン Crystal)…
Fue estrenado en el 2014 y tuvo varias temporadas, la primera que se dividió en dos arcos con 26 episodios en total; la 3 temporada (ya que el segundo arco se toma como segunda temporada) con 13 episodios en total y dos películas, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal y Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos. Todas tuvieron cambios no solo en el arte, también en la dirección, por ello no pongo esa parte; el estudio encargado fue Toei Animation y este maho shojo es de genero drama, romance, fantasía, comedia y ciencia ficción.
En cuanto a la trama…
La historia es casi igual a la que conocemos, no, mentira, si cambia en muchos aspectos, sobre todo con las relaciones de los personajes, unos que eran villanos porque si en las de los 90 y aquí vienen siendo otra cosa, sucesos que no ocurrieron de la misma forma, en fin, tenemos a nuestra protagonista, Usagi Tsukino, una chica de secundaria algo torpe y llorona, que conoce a una gata negra llamada Luna. Esta le revela que es una Guerrero Guardiana (Sailor Guardian) destinada a proteger la Tierra; su primera misión es sencilla pero vital: reunir a otras cuatro guardianas (Mercury, Mars, Jupiter y Venus) para proteger a una misteriosa princesa y un artefacto de poder infinito llamado el Cristal de Plata.
A medida que, el equipo se va concretando Usagi se ve envuelta en un romance trágico y profundo con Tuxedo Mask, un joven enigmático que busca el mismo cristal. Pronto descubren que sus destinos no son casualidad, sino el eco de un pasado antiguo en un reino lunar destruido por la envidia y el odio y, sucesivamente se van introduciendo más personajes, que, serán claves para el crecimiento de nuestra protagonista.
Opinión personal
Sé que, en su momento me enteré que la historia de Sailor Moon no fue muy fiel que se diga al manga, por lo que, al saber que harían un remake de la misma, siguiendo la obra original, pues me emocioné, sin embargo, pues la animación en ese inicio no fue para nada de mi agrado, la estética se sentía plana y muy de videojuego, dígame las transformaciones 😕, uy no, se me hacía horrenda, no podía seguir viéndola, pero, al ver que después de la 3 temporada, mejoró mucho el diseño de sus personajes, pues me calé todas las anteriores y bueno, mal que si mal la historia, pues no estaba, aunque si me topo como sorpresas los cambios, ejemplo y ALERTA SPOILER, el que la princesa serena se suicidio cuando el príncipe Endimion lo mataron, whoaaa, eso fue un choque muy grande.
Como dije, ya después de la tercera temporada, mejoro por mucho la animación y el dibujo, e incluso catalogan ambas películas con una calidad de nivel cinematográfico, con colores vibrantes y una fluidez que Crystal mereció desde el día uno. Como dije, la historia es fiel al manga y eso también hace que no haya relleno, por lo que es un formato como más corto y conciso; me gusta que en esta mamoru (Darien) obtenga como más poder y con una personalidad mucho más cálida y protectora.
Una cosa que, muchos pueden no agradarles y es su diferencia con las de los 90, aquí sus amigas tienen esa relación como más de guardaespaldas que de amiga como tal, no tienen esos episodios dedicados a sus hobbies o miedos personales porque el guion no permite pausas. En definitiva, puedo decir que esta versión es de fantasía oscura y que, muchos argumentan que por fin se les hizo justicia a sus personajes.
Puntos positivos…
-Fidelidad al manga, por lo que su formato más corto es como más fluido de ver.
-Hermosa animación, solo desde la 3 temporada, pero tengo entendido que arreglaron esos detalles en su formato Blu-ray, así que punto extra positivo para ello.
-El Romance de Usagi y Mamoru siente mucho más maduro.
Puntos negativos…
-El CGI en las primeras temporadas y con un diseño horrible.
-Emocionalmente es más fría, pues aquí sus personajes secundarios, sobre todo el de las chicas, no hay como mayor acercamiento y profundidad en las mismas, pierden gran parte de su carisma individual.
-Tono Menos Divertido.

Si eras fan del manga y no te parecía que la de las 90 le hacía justicia, mientras quienes crecimos con esa versión, pues puede parecernos un cambia abrupto y chocante en algunas cosas, pero, no la veo tan mal, se me hizo una experiencia visual y bastante más desarrollada, sobre todo con el tema de sailor cosmo y eso.
