I'm not a big fan of this style of sport, but the animation, the story, and the characters end up captivating me. The story introduces us to Inori Yotsuda, a girl who has grown up with low self-esteem, convinced that she can't achieve anything, and withdrawn from her classmates. Nevertheless, she couldn't practice it herself because her mother refused to let her be part of that world after her sister was injured at a young age, causing her to fall behind in reaching elite standards.
Even so, magic happens when she meets Tsukasa Akeuraji, a frustrated skater who perfectly understands what it means to have a dream that the world tries to steal away, since he also started late; therefore, he sees in her eyes the same passion he once had, deciding to become her coach, betting everything on making her a great skater and gold medalist. Together they form a team determined to defy the logic of professional sports, demonstrating that passion and technique can compensate for lost years. Will little Inori be able to shine on the ice rink?
Personal opinion
First and foremost, I must say that this is an incredibly beautiful story, teaching several important lessons, including the importance of passion and that it's never too late to demonstrate and hone your talent. We can all flourish sooner or later, and in different ways. For example, Inori found someone who supports and refines her in many ways, understanding her weaknesses and strengths so she can be better every day, showing that she's not flawed and has so much to offer. On the other hand, Tsukasa, while he may not have become a gold medalist, is no less talented. I'd even venture to say he's far more talented than anyone who wins medals, because not everyone can teach. His methods are a clear example of how someone with great passion knows how to transmit it in the best possible way. He may not be a champion (mainly because the system closed doors for him), but he's shaping someone who undoubtedly carries his essence within her.
The animation is beautiful and meticulously crafted, the choreography is impressive and incredibly fluid. Despite being in 3D, it doesn't feel stiff; it can even evoke emotion in anyone. The tension and adrenaline are so palpable that even someone unfamiliar with this world can become interested, myself included. I also loved the music. I listened to the opening theme for a long time; it perfectly captures that blend of anxiety and fierce determination that defines the protagonists. In general, the entire soundtrack doesn't just serve as background music; it evolves with the characters, starting subdued and exploding in climactic moments.
I haven't read the manga, but I did read comments that Tsurumaikada's original manga is visually an absolute masterpiece, with page compositions that seem to move on their own, whereas in the anime, the dialogue scenes feel flatter and the pacing of the episodes is somewhat rushed, sacrificing small moments of development for secondary characters.
Positive points…
- Psychological Depth: It's not just about being optimistic; we see nuances, and the trauma of failure and low self-esteem are explored in a very realistic way.
- Beautiful animation, with excellent choreography in the characters' movements.

Con el estreno de su segunda temporada, no podía dejar pasar de recomendar este anime que la verdad me sorprendió, no soy muy fan de este estilo de deporte, pero la animación, la historia y sus personajes terminan encantando. Por ello, para esta semana quiero que agreguen a su lista esta historia y si la han visto, díganme que les ha parecido hasta ahora.
Medalist (メダリスト)…
Estrenada en enero del 2025, bajo la dirección de Yasutaka Yamamoto y del estudio de animación ENGI, nos traen una historia de drama y deportes, donde su creador es Tsurumaikada. La primera temporada contó con 13 capítulos, recientemente ha iniciado su segunda temporada, donde la calidad de la animación no ha bajado por nada; por cierto, un dato curioso y es que el manga ganó el Shogakukan Manga Award en 2023, lo cual es un sello de calidad garantizado.
En cuanto a la trama…

Juntos forman un equipo decidido a desafiar la lógica del deporte profesional, demostrando que la pasión y la técnica pueden compensar los años perdidos ¿Será capaz la pequeña Inori brillar en la pista de hielo?
Opinión personal
Primero y principal, debo decir que es una historia sumamente hermosa, enseñándote varios puntos, entre ellas la pasión por algo y que nunca es tarde para demostrar y pulir tu talento, que todos podemos florecer tarde o temprano y de distintas formas, por ejemplo, Inori, consiguió a alguien que la apoya y la refine en muchos sentidos, comprendiendo sus debilidades y fortalezas para ser mejor cada día, de que no es defectuosa, tiene mucho por dar. Por el otro lado, Tsukasa, que bien no pudo llegar a ser un medallista de oro, eso no le hace menos talentoso, incluso me atrevo a decir que es mucho más talentoso que cualquier que gane medallas, porque no cualquiera puede enseñar y sus métodos son el claro ejemplo de que, cuando alguien tiene una gran pasión lo sabe transmitir de la mejor manera posible, quizás no sea un campeón (más que nada porque el sistema le cerró las puertas), pero está formando a una, que sin duda tiene impregnado la esencia de él.
La animación es hermosa y bien cuidada, las coreografías son impresionantes y muy fluidas, a pesar de estar en 3D, no se siente rígida, hasta hacen emocionar a cualquier, la tensión, la adrenalina, que cualquier que no sabe de este mundo, llegue a interesarse, y me incluyo en eso. La música también me gustó, la del opening la escuché por mucho rato, captura perfectamente esa mezcla de ansiedad y determinación feroz que define a los protagonistas y en general, toda la banda sonora no solo cumple como función de fondo, van creciendo con el personaje, empiezan tímidos y explotan en momentos de clímax.
No he leído el manga, pero si leí comentarios que el manga original de Tsurumaikada es visualmente una obra maestra absoluta, con composiciones de página que parecen moverse solas, mientras que, en el anime, se siente más planos las escenas de dialogo y que, el ritmo de los episodios si está algo apresurado, sacrificando pequeños momentos de desarrollo de personajes secundarios.
Puntos positivos…
- Profundidad Psicológica: aquí no es solo ser optimista y ya, vemos matices, se explora el trauma del fracaso y la baja autoestima de una forma muy real.
-Hermosa animación, con excelentes coreografías en los movimientos de los personajes.
-Mensajes profundos.
-Explicación a detalle de que consiste cada técnica y elemento usado en el patinaje sobre hielo.
-Personajes carismáticos y con quienes logras conectar.
-Excelente banda sonora.

-El ritmo puede sentirse apresurado en ciertos episodios.

Medalist es un anime que aporta muchas emociones al espectador, tiene sus fallos más que nada técnicos, es una serie que te hace sentir que, sin importar cuántos años tengas o cuántas veces te hayan dicho que no sirves, siempre hay un espacio en el "hielo" para alguien que está dispuesto a sangrar por su sueño.

What a joy to see a review of Medalist! I had the exact same experience: I started watching it without many expectations because figure skating isn't really my thing, and I ended up completely hooked.
I completely agree with you about Tsukasa; it's incredible how they manage to convey that, even though the system closed doors on her, her talent shines through through teaching. Her dynamic with Inori is incredibly moving, especially seeing how Inori gradually breaks through her shell of insecurity. It's a gem that deserves much more recognition! Great post!
