This week I come with a recommendation of a great classic, especially as Halloween is getting closer and closer, and which I adore. It's one of my favorite Tim Burton films, and also an exquisite use of stop motion, so I couldn't pass up remembering this little gem from the world of animation.
Corpse Bride….
Released in 2005, known in Latin America as Corpse Bride, directed by none other than Tim Burton (who produced it) and Mike Johnson, the film was made using stop motion techniques and the main characters were voiced by Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Emily Watson, among others. It features animation, romantic comedy, and fantasy.
What's the plot about?…
The story begins when young Victor Van Dort, son of a nouveau riche family, is engaged to the young and sweet Victoria Everglot, whose aristocratic family is bankrupt and her parents see in Victor an opportunity to regain their position in society. At first, both young people were hesitant and nervous, not knowing if they would like each other, but after meeting each other, they created a beautiful and invaluable connection, both feeling the freedom that was being denied to them in their respective families.
However, during the wedding rehearsals, Victor's nerves betray him, making many mistakes, which makes him frustrated and ashamed, fleeing the place; after hearing rumors about him, he decides to go into the woods and practice his vows, causing him to, after saying everything right, insert the ring into a "branch", which was actually the skeletal hand of a lady named Emily, a beautiful but sad corpse bride murdered on her own wedding day. She accepts the supposed declaration and takes him to the vibrant and colorful world of the dead, will Victor be able to return to the world of the living and marry Victoria? Or will he accept Emily?
Personal opinion
There are several things that I like about this film, besides the theme and the story itself, with its Victorian style, the style of the characters, and the animation as a whole, are visually exquisite. Although as a child I didn't find it charming, little by little, as I got into the art world, I found it unique. Aesthetically, it may not be entirely to everyone's taste, but something definitely attracts it, and you already know it's from Tim Burton, just because. Another point is the symbolism that the film holds within it. First, the contrast between the world of the dead and the living, as in the world of the dead it is colorful, you feel another atmosphere, and the world of the living is opaque and lacking in emotion. It is like representing that as long as we are tied to the norms of society, we will not be free unless we are dead. We must change that perspective.
And another symbol, which also represents this freedom and is found recurrently throughout the film, is the image of the butterfly. The butterfly is established as the soul, at first the trapped soul, an imprisoned butterfly that is unable to take flight, and when it is freed, it is like Victor's longing to be like her. Emily is the representation of that butterfly that could not fly and who carries her grief, because her dreams were cut short, she is betrayed; and so on, many other elements are shown that basically transmit the journey of the soul and that I find extremely wonderful.
What I would criticize and what I feel was missing in many aspects, was the lack of depth in its other characters, like Victoria's, who felt flat and there was no connection with them. They gave us more of Victor and Emily, which is good, because they both go on a journey of the soul that ends in different aspects, but also give us more history of the girl who is the love interest of the protagonist, I say.
Positive points…
-Splendid animation, the stop motion is used impeccably.
-Characteristic people.
-Remarkable and profound story and messages.
-A well-chosen soundtrack complements the setting.
Negative points…
-More depth for other characters.
-Some may consider the pacing too linear; there's no dynamism to the plot.

It's truly a beautiful film, exploring not only love but also what it means to be alive and dead, with the use of extraordinary metaphors, without losing Tim Burton's signature somber touch. All in all, it's a good film to watch this May 31st.

Esta semana vengo con una recomendación de un gran clásico, sobre todo acercándose cada vez más Halloween y que adoro, es una de mis películas favoritos de Tim Burton, además de un exquisito uso del recurso de stop motion, por ello, no podía dejar pasar de recordar esta joyita del mundo de la animación.

Estrenado en el año 2005, conocida en Latinoamérica como El cadáver de la novia, dirigida nada más y nada menos que por Tim Burton (mismo que la produjo) y Mike Johnson; filme realizado bajo la técnica del stop motion y quienes prestaron las voces para los personajes principales fueron Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Emily Watson, entre otros. Es de genero animación, comedia romántica y de fantasía.
¿De qué va la trama?…
La historia comienza cuando el joven Víctor Van Dort, hijo de unos nuevos ricos es comprometido en matrimonio con la joven y dulce Victoria Everglot, cuya familia aristocrática se encuentra en la quiebra y sus padres ven en Víctor una oportunidad de recuperar su posición en la sociedad. Al principio, ambos jóvenes se encontraban en duda y nerviosos, pues no sabrían si gustarían entre sí, ya luego de conocerse, crearon una hermosa e invaluable conexión, sintieron en ambos la libertad que se le estaba negando en sus respectivas familias.
Sin embargo, durante los ensayos de la boda, los nervios traicionan a Víctor, cometiendo muchos errores, lo cual hace que se frustre y se avergüence, huyendo del lugar; tras escuchar los rumores sobre él, decide adentrarse al bosque y practicar sus votos, haciendo que, al decir todo bien, inserte el anillo en una “rama”, que en realidad era la mano esquelética de una dama, llamada Emily, una hermosa pero triste novia cadáver asesinada el día de su propia boda. Ella acepta la supuesta declaración y lo lleva al vibrante y colorido mundo de los muertos, ¿será capaz Víctor de regresar al mundo de los vivos y casarse con Victoria? ¿o aceptara a Emily?
Opinión personal
Hay varios puntos que me gustan de esta película, además de la temática y la historia en sí que, con ese estilo victoriano, el estilo de los personajes y la animación en su totalidad, son exquisitas visualmente, a pesar de que, de pequeña no le encontraba encanto, poco a poco al meterme en el mundo del arte, la encontré única, estéticamente puede que no sea del gusto del todo, pero algo en definitiva atrae, aunado que ya uno sabe que es de Tim Burton, si porque sí. Otras de los puntos, es la simbología que la película guarda en sí, primero el contraste entre el mundo de los muertos y el de los vivos, como en el de los muertos es colorido, se siente otro ambiente y el de los vivos es opaco y falta de emoción, es como representando que mientras estemos atados a las normas de la sociedad, no seremos libres al menos que estemos muerto, hay que cambiar esa perspectiva.
Y otro símbolo, que también representa esto de la libertad y que se encuentra recurrentemente en toda la película es la imagen de la mariposa; se establece la mariposa como el alma, en primera instancia el alma atrapada, una mariposa encerrada que no es capaz de emprender vuelo y cuando es liberada, es como ese anhelo de Víctor de ser como ella. Emily es la representación de aquella mariposa que no pudo volar y que lleva su duelo, porque sus sueños fueron truncados, es traicionada; así sucesivamente se van mostrando muchos otros elementos que transmiten básicamente el viaje del alma y que lo encuentro sumamente maravilloso.
Lo que le criticaría y que siento que falto en muchos aspectos, fue la falta de profundidad en sus otros personajes, como los de Victoria, que se sentían planos y no había como esa conexión con ellos, nos dieron más de Víctor y Emily, lo cual esta bien, porque ambos hacen un viaje del alma que terminan en diferentes aspectos, pero danos también más historia de la chica que es el interés amoroso del protagonista, digo yo.
Puntos positivos…
-Una animación esplendida, el stop motion es usado impecablemente.
-Personas características.
-Historia y mensajes destacables y profundos.
-Una buena elección en la banda sonora, complementa la ambientación.
Puntos negativos…
-Mayor profundidad en otros personajes.
-Algunos pueden considerar que el ritmo es demasiado lineal, no hay dinamismo en la trama.

Realmente es una película hermosa, con una exploración no solo al amor, sino lo que significa estar vivo y muerto, con el uso de metáforas extraordinarias, sin perder su toque sombrío que caracteriza a Tim Burton. En definitiva, es una buena película para ver este 31.

Hace algún tiempo tuve la oportunidad de ver esta película y también me pareció que algunos personajes eran muy planos, el ritmo de la historia me pareció lento en ocasiones pero en general me gustó porque siento que hay una buena combinación de elementos entre banda sonora, la actuación de voces, la dirección de Burton y su excelente manejo del stop motion
Si, le falto profundidad y enriquecer a otros personajes, pero Tim Burton tiene algo en sus producciones que las vuelve unicas. 😊 Gracias por dejar tu comentario
