Wednesday Walk - Tejo Promenade, Lisboa - Portugal [Eng-Pt]
Yesterday I had an appointment in the late afternoon at a hospital near my workplace. It's a very pleasant area, and as the day was a little cold but quite sunny, I decided, as soon as I finished my shift, instead of going home and then heading to the hospital, to go there directly, park the car calmly, and take advantage of the time I had left before the appointment to take a walk.
Although parking in the area is not easy, it is not completely impossible, and I was lucky because I found a spot near the main entrance to the hospital. I didn't even have to walk around looking for a long time because the rush hour had already passed.
I put my backpack on, wrapped up warm, put my woolly hat on, and off I went!
The car was parked on Rua da Junqueira, one of the main avenues in this area, and as it was very close to the Lisbon Congress Center, I decided to revisit this area, as the building and the streets had undergone renovation and improvement works.
The well-maintained limestone sidewalks invite anyone to enjoy the timid but warm and welcoming rays of the winter sun. Flanked by vegetation and with a center that allows us to linger a little... I stayed there.
A few minutes later, the Tagus River almost beckoned me to go see it... It is very difficult to walk around here with time to spare and not take the footbridge to the promenade near the river. And that's exactly what I did. I crossed the footbridge that crosses Avenida da Brasília and Avenida da Índia, right in front of the Lisbon Congress Center, to access the part closest to the banks of the Tagus River.
When I reached the other side, the sun was fantastic. The reflections and shades created at this time of day are, for me, the most fantastic for walking and even for taking photographs.
The trees, already bare, ready for the new foliage that will appear in a few months, projected their thin branches towards a blue sky, here and there decorated with clouds so perfect that they looked like they had been drawn by a child in a school class.
On the banks of the Tagus, many recreational fishermen let their rods scratch the sky, casting their lines as far as possible, always hoping to catch something in the calm, cold water at the end of the afternoon.
And then, unexpectedly, a couple who were fishing had a fish just over 20 centimeters long in their hands, freshly caught. They were in the process of removing the hook so they could return it to the river as quickly as possible.
Its common name is “spotted seabass" and it lives in the depths of the water, hunting more at dusk. Its scientific name is Dicentrarchus punctatus.
A little further on, in the Central Garden, you can see a sculpture erected by the artist Vhils, at the request of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Portugal, and in conjunction with the Lisbon City Council, this monument to João Mendes, to mark the arrival of the first Westerner on the Korean Peninsula in the distant year of 1604.
The end of the day was very pleasant, and there is nothing better than synthesizing Vitamin D in this way! But the time of my appointment was quickly approaching, and I had to hurry a little.
I crossed another pedestrian overpass, but this time further east, and closer to the hospital, to cross Avenida da Brasilia and Avenida da Índia, heading towards Rua Mécia Mouzinho da Silveira.
One last look at the fantastic reflections that the sun cast on the Tagus River made me realize that my idea to spend some time on the Tagus Promenade had been a very good one.
And you, has anyone been down this path? Have you visited this riverside area near Belém and Restelo? I confess that it is one of the quietest and most accessible places for a pleasant little late afternoon stroll.

Ontem tinha uma consulta ao fim da tarde num Hospital perto do meu local de trabalho. É uma zona muito agradável, e como o dia apesar de estar um pouco frio até estava bem solarengo, decidi, assim que terminei o turno, e em vez de ir a casa e depois seguir para o Hospital, ir directamente para lá, estacionar o carro com calma, e aproveitar o tempo que ainda faltava até à consulta para dar uma volta.
Apesar da zona não ser de fácil estacionamento, também não é completamente impossível, e até tive sorte, pois consegui um lugar perto da entrada principal para o Hospital. Nem tive que andar muito tempo à procura, pois a hora de maior afluxo já tinha passado.
Coloquei a mochila nas costas, e bem agasalhado, e com gorro de lã metido na cabeça, lá fui eu!
O carro ficou na Rua da Junqueira, uma das avenidas principais desta zona, e como estava bem perto do "Centro de Congressos de Lisboa", decidi revisitar essa área, pois o edifício, bem como os arruamentos tinham sofrido obras de remodelação e beneficiação.
Os passeios de calcário bem aprumados, convidam qualquer um a receber os raios tímidos mas quentes e acolhedores do sol de inverno. Ladeado por vegetação e com um centro que possibilita a deixarmos estar um pouco por aí... lá fui ficando.
Poucos minutos depois, o Rio Tejo quase que clamava que o fosse ver... É muito difícil andarmos por aqui com tempo de sobra, e não passarmos as passagens aéreas, para ir para o calçadão perto do rio. E foi exactamente o que eu fiz. Passei a passagem aérea pedonal que atravessa a Avenida da Brasília e a Avenida da Índia, mesmo em frente ao Centro de Congressos de Lisboa, para aceder ao parte mais perto da margem do rio Tejo.
Chegado ao outro lado, o Sol estava fantástico. E os reflexos e tonalidades criadas nesta altura do dia, para mim são das mais fantásticas para passear, e mesmo para fotografar.
As árvores, já despidas, preparadas para a nova folhagem que dentro de meses surgirá, projectavam os seus finos ramos em direcção a um céu azul, aqui e ali decorados com nuvens tão perfeitas, que pareciam ter sido desenhadas por uma criança numa aula da escola.
Já à beira Tejo, bastantes pescadores lúdicos deixavam as suas canas riscar os céus, atirando as linhas o mais longe possível, e sempre com a esperança de apanharem algo nas água fria a calma neste fim de tarde.
E eis quando, inesperadamente, um casal que estava a pescar, tinha um peixe com pouco mais de 20 centímetros nas mãos, acabadinho de pescar. Estavam nesse mesmo momento a retirar o anzol, para o poder devolver ao Rio o mais rapidamente possível.
O seu nome comum é "Baila" e vive nas profundezas das águas caçando mais ao anoitecer, o seu nome científico é Dicentrarchus punctatus.
Um pouco mais à frente, e no Jardim Central, é possível ver uma escultura erguida pelo artista Vhils, a pedido da Embaixada da República da Coreia em Portugal, e em conjunto com a Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, este monumento a João Mendes, para assinalar a chegada do primeiro ocidental à Península Coreana no longínquo ano de 1604.
O fim de dia estava muito agradável, e não há nada melhor que sintetizar Vitamina D desta forma! Mas, rapidamente a hora da marcação da minha consulta estava a aproximar-se, e tive que apressar um pouco o passo.
Atravessei outra passagem aérea pedonal, mas desta vez mais a Este, e mais perto do Hospital, para atravessar a Avenida da Brasilia e a Avenida da Índia, em direcção à Rua Mécia Mouzinho da Silveira.
Uma ultima vista sobre os reflexos fantásticos que este Sol lançava sobre o Rio Tejo, fez como que a ideia que tive de fazer tempo junto do Calçadão do Tejo tivesse sido muito acertada.
E vocês, alguém já esteve por este caminho? Já visitaram esta parte Ribeirinha aqui perto de Belém e do Restelo? Confesso que é um dos sítios mais calmos e mais acessíveis para um pequeno passeio agradável de fim tarde.
