Quinta dos Aciprestes, Oeiras - Portugal [Eng-Pt]
Good afternoon and welcome to another WorldMapPin Community post!
Today I want to share with you a place that was recently restored by the Municipality of Oeiras, and which I pass by occasionally.
As part of one of my monthly tasks, I had to go to Linda-a-Velha. Due to some pavement renovation work, which is very common at this time of year, just before the local mayoral elections, I had to take a small detour on my way home.
It turned out to be a good thing, because I still had some time and nothing planned for the rest of the afternoon, so it was the perfect opportunity to stop the car and visit this palace!
I will now tell you a little about the Palácio dos Aciprestes, and to do so, I will share some information I obtained from the following source.
The former “Herdade da Ninha da Ribamar,” which included the area of the Palácio dos Aciprestes, has very ancient origins.
Its history dates back to the 17th century, when it was called “Casal Grande,” and it was only christened “Palácio dos Aciprestes” in the 18th century. The estate was given to Alexandre de Gusmão in 1750 by King José I.
The palace, which is over 700 years old, has undergone major renovations and reconstructions, especially after the great earthquake of 1755. The last modifications were made by architect Raul Lino in the 20th century, in 1955.
Currently, the estate houses the Marquês de Pombal Foundation and has approximately 1,000 square meters of lawned gardens and a children's playground.

Hoje quero aqui partilhar com vocês um local que foi recentemente recuperado pelo Município de Oeiras, e que eu passo por lá ocasionalmente.
Numa das minhas tarefas mensais, tive que me deslocar a Linda-a-Velha. Por causa de umas obras de requalificação do pavimento, muito frequentes por esta altura, mesmo antes das eleições para os Presidentes de Câmara locais, tive que fazer um pequeno desvio no caminho de regresso a casa.
E veio a calhar por bem, pois como ainda tinha algum tempo, e não tinha nada planeado para o resto da tarde, acabou por ser a oportunidade perfeita para parar o carro e para conhecer este Palácio!
Vou agora falar-vos um pouco acerca do Palácio dos Aciprestes, e para tal partilho aqui alguma informação que obtive da seguinte fonte.
A antiga "Herdade da Ninha da Ribamar" que incluía a área do Palácio dos Aciprestes, possui uma origem bem antiga.
Sua história remota ao século XVII, onde era denominada de "Casal Grande", só tendo sido baptizada de "Palácio dos Aciprestes" já durante o século XVIII. A Quinta terá sido oferecida a Alexandre de Gusmão em 1750 por D. José I.
O Palácio com mais de 700 anos de existência, passou por grandes remodelações, reconstruções, principalmente depois do grande terramoto de 1755. As ultimas modificações foram feitas por mão do Arquitecto Raul Lino já em século XX, em 1955.
Actualmente a Quinta acolhe a Fundação Marquês de Pombal, tendo uma área circundante com aproximadamente 1000 metros quadrados de jardim relvado, bem como um parque infantil.
I will now take you with me on a tour of this fantastic place. We will start at the entrance. And, as you would expect, everything here transports us back to centuries past and to its stately ownership.
Vou agora levar-vos comigo na visita a este local fantástico. Começamos pela sua entrada. E como não poderia deixar de ser, tudo nela nos transporta para os séculos anteriores, e para a sua posse senhorial.
As soon as we pass through the iron gate, a well-maintained cobblestone path with dark stones leads us to the first garden area, which is immediately to our left.
Assim que passamos o portão de ferro, um caminho empedrado muito bem arranjado, com pedras escuras, leva-nos até ao primeiro espaço jardinado que fica logo à nossa esquerda.
A large, spacious promenade stretches out before us, inviting us to rest on one of the many benches. There is also a restaurant on the right-hand side, located right above a small reflecting pool, which makes the whole area very scenic.
Uma extensa e ampla área de passeio apresenta-se à nossa frente, convidando a descansar num dos muitos bancos. Existe também um restaurante, logo do lado direito, que se posiciona mesmo por cima de um pequeno espelho de água, o que torna toda a área muito cênica.
After exploring every corner of this renovated space, I returned to the main path, the one after passing through the main entrance gate, and turned left, climbing the small slope that led me to the upper garden, which retains its more ancestral characteristics and which, honestly, is much more to my liking. Although I like landscaped spaces, I confess that visiting an old garden has a different kind of magic, don't you agree? After walking a short distance, we arrived at the entrance to the upper garden.
Depois de ter descoberto os cantos a este espaço renovado, regressei ao caminho principal, aquele depois de ter passado o portão da entrada principal, e virei para a esquerda, subindo a pequena ladeira que me levou ao jardim de cima, que mantem as características mais ancestrais, e que sinceramente é muito mais do meu agrado. Apesar de gostar de espaços arranjados, confesso que visitar um jardim antigo, tem outra magia, não concordam? Percorrendo um pequeno percurso, eis que chegamos até à entrada do jardim de cima.
The cypress trees surround it. The large quadrangular lawn in the center clearly shows the idea that he wanted to convey to those who glimpsed it from the palace itself, which is on the right side, at the top of the grounds.
On this particular day, the playground was hosting a birthday party. The atmosphere was fantastic! Lots of fun, joy, and of course noise! (But “good” noise).
Os aciprestes rodeiam-no. O espaço quadrangular amplo relvado ao centro, mostra bem a ideia que queria passar a quem o vislumbrava do Palácio propriamente dito, que fica do lado direito, na parte superior do terreno.
O parque infantil, neste dia em particular recebia uma festa de um aniversariante. O ambiente era fantástico! Muita brincadeira, alegria e claro barulho! (Mas barulho do "bom").
The flowers, the marble statue, the view of the lower garden, and even the antique iron lamps make this space very pleasant. The tiles used to top the small garden walls take our imagination to another dimension. I love it when I go for a walk and my mind escapes reality and flies freely!
As flores, a estatueta de mármore, a vista para o jardim inferior, e mesmo até os candeeiros antigos de ferro, tornam este espaço muito agradável. Os azulejos usados para encimar os pequenos muretos do jardim, levam a nossa imaginação para uma outra dimensão. Adoro quando vou passear, e a minha mente se escapa por entre a realidade, e voa livremente!
One last photograph of the iron gate at the main entrance. I leave this place after a brief stroll on a Sunday afternoon in summer, with a strong desire to return and perhaps bring a book to accompany me on this little foray into the last century...
