Porto Santo Island - A true pearl in the ocean

Today, I want to share with you a holiday I took, about 3 years ago, also around this time of the year. I will share with you the natural and superb beauty of one of the almost Caribbean style paradises we have in our national territory.

The place I'm taking is Porto Santo. And as the name suggests, it is a place too beautiful. It has been elevated to a Unesco Nature Reserve in 2020! And you'll soon find out why!

Located near Madeira Island, it is also known as the Pearl of the Atlantic. Currently there are some weekly flights between Lisbon and Porto Santo and there is also the possibility of making the crossing between Funchal and Porto Santo Island by sea.

Once we arrived on the Island, we were warmly welcomed into a flat that we rented for our stay. This holiday was immediately prior to a friends wedding that was to take place the following week on the island of Madeira.

Who knows Madeira Island? If you don't know it, I advise you to visit it at least once in your life. You won't regret it.

In relation to Porto Santo Island, if what you are looking for is unexplored nature, stunning landscapes, golden sandy beaches and crystal clear water, of a deep blue and so limpid that we are almost transported to a Caribbean environment rather than the Lusitanian one.

After a small walk, we arrived at our destination beach, and this was the view that we have got... Amazing!

The magic happens for the perfect location in the "middle" of the Atlantic Ocean, giving perfect weather conditions for who finds a Summer time relaxation vacations....

Our daily journeys were always a delight for our souls and eyes... The natural beauty of the Island is something that leaves no one indifferent.

The island has squares finely decorated with flowers and vegetation, and many of the times even with small fountains that make the walk more pleasant. I must not forget to mention that the average temperature of the island oscillates during the day and all year round between 15 and 32º C, making it a fantastic destination for those seeking a little rest for body and mind.

The island has several points of interest. One of them is this unusual place called Pico da Ana Ferreira. The volcanic rock from the activity of thousands of years ago, form hexagonal prismatic columns, which seem to have been drawn with rule and square.

The calhetas are observation points between Porto Santo Island and the surrounding islets. From these locations, the framing and the beauty and depth of the waters are impressive.

On a beach very close to this cliff, we find a little paradise... a beach in a cove, surrounded by rocky formations, dark in colour, with countless natural pools that are created at low tide, giving back to the holidaymakers the pleasure of enjoying a walk by the sea...

On one of the nights we still had the opportunity, while walking around the island, to visit the festivities in honour of São João, patron saint of the island. The folkloric costumes, the music, the bonfire, everything made a perfect summer evening even more magical!

on the last day, even the ferry trip to Funchal, by Lobo do Mar, was a very pleasant experience. I spent most of the trip, which takes about 2 hours, outside enjoying the ocean breeze, and recording the moment when we sighted the island of Madeira... Unforgettable.

I hope you enjoyed my photo reportage of Porto Santo Island. You already know, that if you are in Europe, it might even be a chance to consider in your plans for a relaxed holiday with blue sky and deep, clean sea... Where the population is more than used to being welcoming and friendly. You should avoid the peak tourist seasons as the experience may be affected by the amount of tourists present on the island.

Madeira looks nothing like I imagined. I thought it was more rough and all I can see on your pictures are beautiful beaches 🙂 Definitely a place to visit!

You are right about the differences between Porto Santo and Madeira Island. Besides they distance 65km, the landscape is completely different. Madeira, in mho is far much more interesting, and more beautiful then Porto Santo. If you plan a trip to Madeira, you might consider the option of finishing or starting your vacations with a nice relaxed staying in Porto Santo... You would get a pretty nice tan, and a free of spirit too! Ahahah
