Parque Verde da Várzea, Torres Vedras, Portugal [Eng-Pt]

Anyone who knows me in real life knows that I like to discover new places, both in the areas I pass through every day and, of course, when I travel to different locations. I try to find out a little about the place, its people, its parks, and some of its local history.
A few months ago, I had to travel to Torres Vedras to meet a friend, and since I arrived well before the appointed time for him to leave work, I decided to explore the urban park located right in front of where I had parked.
This park has been around for two decades and is located in the western part of the city, occupying an area that was a vineyard from the Middle Ages until the mid-20th century.
This area was also used in the past for soccer games, bullfights, monthly markets, and the São Pedro Fair.
In 1999, the location of the Feira de São Pedro was moved to the Regional Exhibition Park, allowing this land to be used for the construction of a green corridor right in the center of the city of Torres Vedras.
This park covers an area of approximately 9 hectares and, in addition to a fitness circuit, has a skatepark (currently undergoing renovation and restoration), a sports center, an amphitheater, a playground, a restaurant, and an Environmental Education Center.
It was inaugurated on April 23, 2004, and since then has welcomed the population for outdoor walks, sports activities, picnics, and everything that contact with nature makes possible.
It has wide streets with leafy avenues lined with green trees and plenty of shade. Although on this morning, it felt really good to warm my skin on the hot ground at the end of the late morning at the beginning of autumn.
Its architecture is anything but monotonous, allowing visitors to walk around or even do a fitness circuit. I even saw several people jogging.
In the westernmost part, the wooden benches have been embellished with paintings of wild animals that are commonly seen here. I was very impressed by the number of benches that have been painted for this purpose.
I also passed through the central part of the park, where there are two paradise olive trees (Elaeagnus angustifolia) which, despite being in need of rehabilitation and special care, receive all the attention and support they need (literally!).
At the northernmost point, we caught a glimpse of a beautiful water fountain. It consists of six fountains that spout water rhythmically and energetically, providing a beautiful spectacle... Even though it wasn't very hot on this particular morning, it is a simple and very pleasant sight to behold.
I still managed to take some decent photos with the shadows cast by the vertical fountains.
At the end, next to the park entrance I chose, there is a sculpture in honor of the great Portuguese cyclist and “son” of the land, Joaquim Agostinho.
This cyclist won the Tour de France twice, and despite only starting to race at the age of 23, this did not prevent him from achieving great things, despite his rather peculiar pedaling technique. On April 30, 1984, while leading the Volta ao Algarve, and in the fifth stage, about 300 meters from the finish line, he suffered a spectacular fall when a dog crossed his path. This fall caused Joaquim to suffer a serious and fatal head injury.
A few months after his death, he was honored with this sculpture by Soares Branco. In this sculpture, the artist highlights the personality and bravery that characterized the Portuguese international cyclist.

Quem me conhece na vida real, sabe que eu gosto de descobrir novos sítios, pelos locais onde eu passo diariamente, e obviamente também quando me desloco a uma localidade diferente. Tento descobrir um pouco sobre essa localidade, sobre as gentes, os parques da localidade, e alguma da história local.
Há uns meses atrás, tive eu que me deslocar até Torres Vedras, para ir ter com um amigo, e aproveitei como cheguei bem antes da hora marcada, a que ele saia do trabalho, e decidi ir descobrir o parque urbano que mesmo à frente do local onde eu tinha estacionado se encontrava.
Este parque conta já com duas décadas de existência, e situa-se na zona poente da cidade, ocupando uma área que desde a idade Média até ao pleno século XX eram uma vinha.
Esta área também era utilizada antigamente para jogos de futebol, touradas, dos mercados mensais e da Feira de São Pedro.
Em 1999, a localização da Feira de São Pedro passou a ser realizada no Parque Regional de Exposições, permitindo desde então que estes terrenos fossem usados para a construção de um corredor verde bem no centro da cidade de Torres Vedras.
Este parque abrange uma área aproximada de 9 hectares, e tem para além de circuito de manutenção, de um skatepark (que actualmente se encontra em remodelação e recuperação), um polidesportivo, um anfiteatro, um parque infantil, e um Restaurante, bem como de um Centro de Educação Ambiental.
A sua inauguração aconteceu no dia 23 de Abril de 2004, e desde então acolhe a população para passeios ao ar livre, actividades desportivas, piqueniques, e tudo o de contacto com a natureza possibilita.
Apresenta arruamentos bem amplos, com avenidas frondosas, ladeadas por árvores de folhagem verdejante, e com muitas sombras disponíveis. Se bem que nesta manhã, estava mesmo a saber bem aquecer a pele com o solo quente do fim de manhã de inicio de Outono.
A sua arquitectura não é nada monótona, permitindo que seja percorrido a caminhar, ou fazer mesmo um circuito de manutenção. Ainda tive oportunidade de ver várias pessoas a correrem.
Na parte mais a oeste, os bancos de madeira foram valorizados com pinturas com animais silvestres que são habituais de serem aqui avistados. Fiquei muito impressionado com a quantidade de bancos que foram pintados para este efeito.
Ainda passei pela parte central do parque, onde estão duas oliveiras do paraíso (Elaeagnus angustifolia) que apesar de estarem a precisar de reabilitação e cuidados especiais, têm toda a atenção e suporte preciso (literalmente!)
No ponto mais a norte, conseguimos vislumbrar um bonito repuxo de água. Ele é composto por seis fontes que jorram água de forma rítmica e muito enérgica, o que proporcionou um bonito espectáculo... Mesmo que nesta manhã em particular não estar muito calor, é um espetáculo simples e muito prazeroso de ver.
Ainda consegui fazer algumas fotografias com alguma qualidade e com as sombras dos repuxos verticais causavam.
No fim, e ao lado do ponto de entrada do parque que eu escolhi, existe uma escultura em homenagem ao grande ciclista português e "filho" da terra, Joaquim Agostinho.
Este ciclista conquistou por duas vezes a volta à France (Tour de France), e apesar de ter começado a correr com 23 anos, não foi impeditivo, de atingir enormes feitos, apesar da sua técnica de pedalar bastante peculiar. A 30 de Abril de 1984, quando liderava a Volta ao Algarve, e na quinta etapa, a cerca de 300 da linha de meta, sofreu uma aparatosa queda, quando um cão se atravessou no seu caminho. Essa queda levou a que Joaquim sofre-se um grave e letal traumatismo craniano.
Poucos meses depois da sua morte, foi homenageado com esta escultura de Soares Branco. Nesta escultura, o artista destaca a personalidade e a bravura que caracterizava o ciclista internacional Português.
