The carp of the lagoon || Las Carpas de la laguna [ENG/ESP]

The afternoon sun reflected golden glints on the still surface of the artificial lagoon. I slowly approached the water's edge, holding a small jar of food in my hand. I hadn't even thrown in a single grain when I could already see the shadows of the carp approaching, as if they had learned to recognize the silhouettes of visitors.

I took a handful of small brown pellets and gently tossed them into the water. Within seconds, the liquid mirror broke into a swirl of open mouths and flapping fins. Some carp were enormous, orange and gold, while others had black and white spots, like an artist's brushstrokes.

As I watched, a particularly large one—a deep coppery hue—appeared right in front of me. It opened and closed its mouth several times, as if asking for more. It made me smile. I took another handful and dropped it near it. The carp moved forward and, with a swift movement, caught the pellets before the smaller fish could reach them.

The sound of splashing water and the occasional slosh of the fish's tails enveloped me in a sense of peace. In that moment, time seemed to stand still. There was no rush, just the simple pleasure of watching these creatures glide gracefully through their aquatic world.

After a few minutes, the feed bin was empty. The carp seemed to understand that the party was over and, little by little, they moved away toward the depths of the lagoon. I stayed a moment longer, watching the gentle ripples on the surface before turning and walking away with a smile. There was something special about that little ritual, something that always made me feel at one with nature.

Me hizo sonreír.
