Built in the 17th century, the Cabildo was the seat of the colonial government. From its balconies, proclamations were read, regulations were issued, and civic life in the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata was controlled. But it was in May 1810 that the people gathered outside its doors, demanding the removal of the viceroy and the establishment of a Creole government.

On May 25, after days of deliberations, the Cabildo created the First Governing Junta, thus marking the beginning of the Argentine independence process.
