I take a slow, relaxing approach to Three Tune Tuesday: I like to share pre-1924 78rpm songs from my collection, and record them while playing on an appropriate time-period windup phonograph. I encourage you to take a few moments and slow down with me. Settle down, close your eyes, and take yourself back.. way back.. in time, to a distant uncle's parlour in the early 1920's. There are comfortable seats, pleasant conversation, and old music.
Let's face it: The United States was founded on social discontent, revolution, and defiance. That's the theme of this week's Three Tune Tuesday: Defiance. I go into it a lot in the podcast - I'll be perfectly honest, the podcast itself has taken a turn toward what I like to call social justice - but I'll keep most of that out of this post. If you'd like to hear what I have to say about it, go have a listen!
Casey Jones
Casey Jones was a real figure, a train engineer in the 1800s, who was known for running a very punctual train. Sadly, his story came to a tragic end when his train collided with another broken train. What is defiant about him is his defiance in the face of certain tragedy; his heroism saved other lives as he knew his was probably going to end.
Tell That to the Marines
World War I. The German's have begun to assault shipping lanes and in the process drew the United States into WWI. The German Chancellor taunted the readiness of the US. This was the response. One of Al Jolson's finest songs, with defiance oozing out of every stanza. I'm only a naturalised US citizen, but this song makes me want to go punch a nazi in the face.
How Ya Gonna Keep 'em down on the Farm
So the soldiers came back from WWI. Were they really to be expected to go back to the farm? They were over seas, fought, killed, and kissed a lot of pretty ladies. Were they ready to go back to farming? No, probably not.
