Flames and Waves of Fury (A Serfdom and Sorcery Fantasy - DREEM-WOTW Submission)

Flames roared his frustration. "I'm a dragon, not a gull! Such indignity, sending me out to sea after a baby kraken!"

His metallic red and gold wings beat steadily, effortlessly sending him forward. When he was further out to sea than he realized was possible, he saw it.

The whale was thrashing - seawater splashed mightily! Water met the few high clouds floating lazily above, dispersing them. After the brief but violent struggle, the whale was pulled under by tree-trunk like tentacles.

Flames circled the area. "Ahhh. I wonder if this one has young?"

He sighed, then took a deep breath, folded his wings, and plummeted into the water. When he spotted them, Flames was so deep that the light was almost non-existent, and he had switched to night vision several leagues ago.

He circled the twitching whale and its tormentor, keeping his distance.

"There it is!" the young dragon thought triumphantly, spotting movement some distance away.

The little squid-like creature was being rolled across the ocean floor by a strange glowing fish. The fish was as round as the stuffed skin balls used by the children in his human friend's village.

Flames positioned himself in the path of the fish and kraken. When they reached him, he gently snatched the baby in his deadly jaws, and propelled himself towards the surface with his powerful tail.

The moment the dragon's nostrils encountered air, he exhaled. The baby kraken had wrapped its little tentacles around his neck. While harmless because of its small size, it was still strong enough to cause discomfort.

Before Flames could breathe, something latched onto his tail, and pulled him under. He involuntarily inhaled, sucking in seawater.

Feeling himself drowning, the powerful dragon spit out the baby kraken, which was still curled around his neck. As he battled the mighty creature, the terrified baby squeezed ever tighter.

With one final desperate wrench of his body, Flames rose out of the water, with the mother kraken still attached to him. Out of her element, she let go to drop back into the water.

The baby, too frightened to know better, kept his grip.

The huge young dragon flew slowly over the ocean, struggling and failing to gain altitude. Finally flopping into the water, utterly exhausted, Flames floated for a few minutes, then his eyelids became impossibly heavy.

When he awoke, his head was resting on something soft, his nostrils barely clearing the calm water. As the grogginess lifted, he began to tread water.

The floating pillow sank, then surfaced inches from his snout. It was the baby kraken!

Once he had revived enough to fly, he gently nuzzled the little kraken, who carefully wrapped itself around his neck. Then he dove under a short distance, and shot into the sky.
