How To Make A Standard Crochet Bow Bag.

avatar

I never really knew how I would react to making urgent crochet orders until yesterday. As I was putting some finishing touches to another crochet project, a client texted me saying that her friend's birthday is coming up in two days and she'd like me to make a crochet item for this friend of hers.

When she said that the crochet item she wanted to gift her friend was the crochet bow bag, I subconsciously said that I could deliver the bag in less than 24 hours. I made the necessary calculations and gave the client the cost for making the bag. Usually, whenever it comes to making an urgent piece, it's well in a crafter’s right to charge higher than normal but since I knew I would finish the bag in less than three hours, I let it slide.

Immediately the payment was made, I went to the market, grabbed supplies for the project and got to work. I wasn't exactly timing myself but I know that I started watching the two hour movie ‘Wicked’ as I began the project and by the time the movie ended, I was rounding up this project. One can say it took roughly two hours and thirty minutes from the start to the completion of this project. So, without further ado, let me take you through the process of making a standard crochet bow bag.

Materials needed

  • 100g of white yarn
  • 3.5mm crochet hook
  • A pair of scissors
  • Darning needle
  • Stitch markers

Stitches Used

  • Double crochet stitch
  • Half double crochet stitch
  • Slip stitch

The Process

First, I started by making a chain of forty. The foundation chain determines how wide the bag would be. Since this bag wasn't supposed to be extremely wide, I chose to go with forty foundation chains.

Next, I inserted a double crochet stitch four chains from the hook. With that, I made double crochet stitches round the foundation chains till I got to the last stitch. Into the last stitch, I inserted five double crochet stitches and continued inserting double crochet stitches on the other half of the foundation chain. At the end, I made a slip stitch and that rounded up row one for me.

For row two, I made two chains, turned my work over and inserted double crochet stitches all round the row. At the end of the row, I made a slip stitch and chained two in preparation for row three.

I repeated the pattern from row two till I got to the seventeenth row. This was the desired length so I made the final slip stitch, made a chain onone to secure and then proceeded to cut off the yarn. The body of the bag was ready.

Bag Handle

To make the handle of the bag, I kept a long thread for sewing in later and then proceeded to chain one hundred and sixteen stitches for the foundation chain. The extra eighth stitches on both ends that amount to sixteen were added so that I could stitch the bag handle onto the body of the bag later on.

Next, I made two extra chains that served as my turning chains and into the stitches, I made half double crochet stitches into the back loops only. I repeated this for a total of three rows and at the end of the third row, I cut off my yarn.

Center Strip

To make the center strip, once again, I kept a long piece of thread and then proceeded to make thirty-five chains. These number of chains were enough to hold the bow snuggly after I tested it. Hence, it's pertinent to check the number of chains that would fit.

Next, I made three rows of double crochet stitches for the center strip and this concluded the final detail of the bag.

The next thing I did was to couple all of the parts together. Using the long thread I kept, I sewed the bag handles onto the sides of the bag and the center strip too. Finally, I sewed in my loose ends, cut off the remnants and the bsf was ready to be shipped out.

I was very careful while taking pictures of this bag because of its colour. I wouldn't want to stain an urgent order made with white yarn a few hours before its delivery.

Did I regret taking this urgent order? No. On the contrary, I enjoyed every bit of making this crochet bow bag. The first ever crochet bow bag I made was with two colours but I believe the single colour works too. What do you think of the fancy crochet bow bag?

You have presented a wonderful art to all of us using textile yarn. You have prepared a wonderful creative bag by just weaving from start to finish. Which looks very beautiful and smooth. Thank you very much for preparing this wonderful creative art.
