IMDb

Synopsis: England. 1925. While a lavish party takes place at a traditional family's country house, a sinister plot is being executed. The following day, when one of the guests is found dead, the hostess, Lady Eileen Brent, takes on the unlikely role of detective in the search for the solution to a highly intriguing mystery.

Based on Agatha Christie's crime novel (of the same name, published in 1929), this new Netflix adaptation arrives in TV series format. Throughout the three episodes (about 50 minutes each), the audience is "swallowed" into a plot where the mystery is much more complex than it initially appears. The narrative aspects are a very attractive return to the suspenseful atmosphere with a classic feel from past decades, making us question each and every character that emerges throughout the development of this engaging plot.

The Wrap

It all begins during a party full of members of the English aristocratic high society that is taking place in a country house. While the guests drink, eat and dance, a terribly calculated plan is being put into practice, which ends up resulting in the death of one of the guests, Gerry Wade. Thus, the Caterham mansion ends up becoming the scene of a crime. Unexpectedly, Lady Eileen Brent (daughter of Lady Caterham) becomes, to everyone's surprise, a detective determined to find the murderer of her future fiancé.

What begins with just a single traumatic event soon takes on more complex contours, because just like the protagonist Bundle (Lady Brent's nickname), the audience is surprised by other murders throughout the episodes, making it very clear that the clock prank that was set up during the luxurious party at the country house was just a brief (but turbulent and surprising) beginning of everything that was yet to come. The series' script isn't bad, but it's too rushed in its conclusions (bringing an escapist version in relation to the original material).

Radio Times

In my view, it became more than clear that this TV series is a very well-intentioned project, however, it is necessary to emphasize that good intentions are not always enough to make good adaptations (whether for television or film... and in this case, everything becomes more difficult to deal with because we are talking about an adaptation that has as its main source one of Agatha Christie's best-known books). Chris Chibnall is the mind behind what we watch, and although his work is reasonably interesting, the script lacked boldness and a firm hand.

To be even more honest, not only in the script, but also in the directing work done by Christopher Sweeney (which isn't bad either, but is much less solid than it should have been). Sweeney and Chibnall choose simpler paths to deal with a plot that is actually much more complex (and yet, they fail to deliver something more challenging or more attractive). Ironically, even being a mediocre adaptation, it is still something of above-average quality, mainly because of its technical aspects (with a highlight for the set design).

Devon Live

Despite having a charismatic protagonist with highly sharp "investigative skills" (which ended up sounding to me like a somewhat forced narrative strategy to try to connect with the audience), with the exception of herself, the rest of the characters end up not being that interesting (and many of them end up being used in a very disposable or superficial way). Featuring names like Helena Bonham Carter, Martin Freeman and Mia McKenna-Bruce in the main cast, no one delivers memorable performances (much less the supporting actors).

Going back and forth in the "timeline" at the beginning of each episode (more precisely between the years 1920 and 1925), the script thankfully manages to be efficient (at least most of the time) in keeping the secrets about what is really happening intact. However, this doesn't hold up in the last episode, where things become a little more obvious (but still curiously interesting in the broader context) and some "conveniences" within the narrative to turn the protagonist into a kind of "super-spy" make everything somewhat implausible.

Despite its ups and downs, Agatha Christie's Seven Dials remains good entertainment (especially if you're the type of audience that enjoys investigative suspense plots), and even if it's not as interesting as it should be, it's still worth watching for the contextualized immersion within the classic visual style of more traditional detective stories (which in this adaptation are even a little bolder when we consider the open ending, leaving loose ends for a possible next season). Set your watch and watch it.

[ OFFICIAL TRAILER ]

CRÍTICA DE SERIE DE TELEVISIÓN: “Agatha Christie: Las Siete Esferas” (2026)

Sinopsis: Inglaterra. 1925.

We found it fun even if the plot was a bit silly at times. These period things do tend to look nice though and I recognised some locations in Bath. I've not read much Agatha Christie and maybe I should read more.
