Beyond The Looking Glass - Words of the Unseen - Chapter 92

Beyond The Looking Glass is the second book in the Unseen series, a story that came to me from the other side. A story where I thought I was just the narrator until I heard the Words of the Unseen.
This second story goes beyond time and place and mixes the long ago with the here and now. Because history keeps repeating, until we learn and do something about it.

Beyond The Looking Glass - Words of the Unseen - Chapter 92

Madrid is a more serious event, I am assigned to the wing with the mildest cases. As I have never been into trouble or in jail, I am considered a softy, I guess.
Not that I mind, I mean thank god, I am not on the ward with the psycho killers, just imagine having those guys surround you all day, and having to speak Spanish.
The staff are even trying to find a cell mate for me who also speaks English, or maybe they are trying to find one for the old Georgian captain, with whom he can talk.
In any case, Giorgi is someone who is not bothered by my snoring and who seems to know how things work around here.
He shows me how to take food in your napkin from the canteen to your cell in case you are hungry later. Because like me he has not got a dime.
That means you need to create your own stash.
The other thing he introduces me to is having seconds. To get seconds, it helps being friends with the North African boys in the kitchen.
As they are the only English-speaking tribe in here, I connected with them already and they don´t mind me coming back for the leftovers, which then allows you to take your dessert or fruit back to the cell. We even bring sausages and pork chops.
Giorgi is a true hustler, I don't see him all day but in the evening he always manages to put something tasty down on the little table and share.
Cookies, chocolate, fruit, apparently he is busy arranging a TV because he keeps talking about it, although I don't quite understand what is preventing it.
What I do understand is that he is here for smuggling, he was the captain of his ship...and knew nothing about the second shipment. The Spanish coast guard caught up with him and he was held responsible.
I don´t know much about boating, but I do know that most captains have a very good idea of what is going on one their ship. But in jail, everyone is innocent.
A guard behind glass in the central area signals me to come. I walk over to their security booth, it is now day 8, this is my third day in Madrid, and I expect to hear that I am flying tomorrow.
"The Dutch Embassy called, your father is looking for you. He now knows that you are here, can you call him back?
Isn´t that great, there goes my plan was not to inform anyone until I was at least in the Netherlands.
No reason to worry unnecessarily, I did not even know what was going on here, let alone that they would benefit from knowing.
And what if I had not been able to call him back?
What if I did not get my jacket, did not have 10 euros, and did not use it to buy deodorant and a phone card?
I take three deep breaths and then dial my father's number. How strange that at this moment, when it really comes down to it, I still know the three numbers from my youth by heart.
Grandma, rest in peace. My mother's, and my father's.
"Hi it´s me....."
"Boy, are you okay?" I hear his voice trembling and my dad is anything but emotional normally.
"For a prison, better than expected, they are quite nice here."
The trembling subsides a bit as he continues, "I spoke to the embassy and they have to bring you here in 10 days. Then you go to Breda, and I have already arranged a lawyer."
Those last words generate a wave of relief, I had been thinking for days how I could arrange a good lawyer without a penny in my pocket.
"That is wonderful, but I believe it is 10 working days because they are not making any attempt to transport me and there are two bank holidays this week."
The silence is profound, for a moment I think I might have lost the connection, then his voice is back.
"The lawyer will hear as soon as you come to the Netherlands and then I will know too. Hang up quickly in case you have to call again."
That is typical of my father, always thinking practically in difficult times.
