Guess I should start calling this show great bands that never did squat in the US.

And trust me I am not doing this on purpose.

I am just looking for great Nineties bands with a bunch of hits and a cool or interesting story.

Bands you do not hear all the time but that were big back in the day, and these guys were huge.

When I went to see them on Lowlands it was the biggest crowd I saw on that festival that year.

But wait that was 2005, let's keep it clean this week and focus on them Fookin Nineties.

Get Ready For Outer Space

Yes, these guys started their fame with a song called Charly but as I did not like it back then I will not play it right now.

I liked their second tune a lot more, and yes I was still early in that place:

They Were The Gods Of Hellfire

But they crushed it when they released the Fire/Jericho single, never did I hear a song saying: I am the God of Hellfire and I bring you....FIRE!

Or did I?
That God Sounded Freaking Familiar?

Maybe that was why I got hooked as I was not that into dance till FIRE!

Yes, I listened to Dance tunes as we had a little drive-in Disco but I was more of a guitar guy... but The Prodigy did not give a F about that and they sent my brain out of space on the first ever dance tune I danced to.

1992 Changed Everything

"Let me tell you, folks, this song? It was huge in the Netherlands. Absolutely massive, bigger than anywhere else. The biggest these guys ever had in that countryβ€”believe me, nobody’s seen anything like it!"

Now these guys were sampling geniuses...at least for back in the days and unlike the KLF I think these muppets paid their royalties. Which means this guy got quite rich:

Now I always thought that Out Of Space sampled something from this The Shamen song, but it turns out they did not...but I still hear it!

After sending us Out Of Space these guys were unstoppable single after single would be a dancefloor banger beyond all that Eurtrash dance we were made to listen to.

Outa Space

The Prodigy was different, they stood out and that....would only get worse. Because they did not fit in... they developed from being a rave act...to a full-blown festival band that appealed to the same people who jumped around on House of Pain and screamed:

Fuck you I won't Do What You Tell me when RATM would kick out the jams....

These guys..., they struck gold with Firestarter dance and metal collided like never before-

And all that thanks to one guy called Keith...or so it would seem.

Beasty Wankas

The Prodigy created a little controversy.... and they got a little banned:

They even had a Beasty Boy crying that they should stop smacking bitches.

But come on...donΒ΄t blame these guys....they should not have gotten cancelled over these lyrics...

Especially because they were not their lyrics but came from "Give the Drummer Some" by the Ultramagnetic MCs, these guys wrote the controversial vocal line "Change my pitch up, smack my bitch up".

BTW they had sampled the Ultramagnetic MCs before in my other favorite Out Of Space.

The Boys and The Prodigy have one thing in common...

When the single β€˜Sabotage’ by Beastie Boys from 1994 is playing in the car, the driver is most likely to speed and drive aggressively. But 'Firestarter' by The Prodigy and 'Stronger' by Kanye West also provoke a lot of aggression in the driver. The new single β€˜Someone Like You’ by Adele has a very calming effect, just like Coldplay's β€˜Yellow’ and 'Breakdown' by Jack Johnson.

Top 5 Blood Pressure Raising Tracks:

1. Beastie Boys - 'Sabotage'
2. The Prodigy - 'Firestarter'

What You Mean Aggresive Driving

Anyway, that whole cancel culture was still very light back in the Nineties and I play that Smacking Bitch song every opportunity I got...

and the crowd?

These guys were the basis of my club nights, they had so many bass-busting bastard tunes.

Of course, I have my favorites, of course Smack Her Hips was the one that would move every butt.

But there were multiple butt-shaking power songs, one that I can not deny is that Diesel Power Tune. The pure BAZZZ in this one always caught me off guard.

And when I smacked my BabyΒ΄s Hipps up it always gave her a little bit of a bitchy temper and these Prodigies knew that feeling.

These guys remixed, and got remixed, and the ab fab remix

There is just one, this 1994 song remake by Pendelum:

And even after the Nineties they kept coming and kept coming back.

They truly made underground mainstream and yes they were at their best when playing live.

It might have been the drinks and well...some other stuff but this Lowlands show is how I like to remember them forever.

Bottom Line

They were and maybe still are not just the biggest alternative dance act of all time...

For me above all, they were the backbone to every set I played back in my Club Extase days.

They glued rock and dance together like no other band could, many tried, but none would take the floor by storm as these British Bastards.

#NinetiesFriday was brought to you by My NinetiesItalic Rant

And maybe itΒ΄s best to remember that little firestarter like that because just imagine this:

WTF do I do on #NinetiesFriday?
Well, don't do what I do because that would be copy/pasta!

But some ideas are music, movies, television, sports, or really anything Nineties related.

I assume movie, TV, or music topic reviews or talk will be most common, but you could also talk about a sports memory or something else.

Thank Goodness you made it till the end Pees, Love and I am out of here!

I remember the first time I heard Prodigy. They were playing one of their videos on the TV at the store where I worked and I realized we needed to change it quick, but the song just kind of stuck with me. I remember whenever people were not in the store we would keep turning it back hoping the song would come on.

That is funny. Sounds like a great memory! I really need to listen to them again. I haven't in a long time. I saw that NIN is touring again the other day. Not sure I would be able to get @mrsbozz to go with me.
