The Lie I Believed That Turned Into The Most Beautiful Birthday Surprise

Surprises is one of the best things that give an extra layer to my life. I seldom received surprises before, but now that my boyfriend arrived, I receive them on random, normal days. Sometimes, on special occasions, he would lie to me about his financial constraints and say he couldn't buy something for me, and I would fall for this trap. And when the special day comes, I would see him carrying gifts in his hands, approaching me with a big smile. Such is what happened on my birthday. A random, memorable surprise.

First, I would like to let you see the culprit of these butterflies in my stomach that I am feeling until now. I have been feeling it for four days now, and I can't get over the feeling of him surprising me. This man really did a great job of deceiving me with his reasons and obvious excuses, such as why he didn't want me to go with him to the resort and why he told me to go instead to the restaurant where we would have our dinner. We always go together, but that time was different. We went individually.

I would like to share my boyfriend's gift to me that made me teary-eyed and happy during my birthday. He told me he couldn't get a gift for my birthday because he has some financial priorities. I believed him, but he lied. He had something for me. It was just an act.

He gave me an audio tape containing his birthday message for me and photo cards in a box. He also gave me a bouquet of flowers, but it is a different one. He used to give me real flowers, but this time he gave me flower soap. That's how I name it. It is a flower made of soap, and when soaked with water, it would melt, but not easily. It takes time to melt.

The photo cards contain our photos from day one and were carefully chosen to capture our relationship's timeline. He even added the first photo he took on our first date when I invited him, amidst my heart racing while thinking he might not like me. But I am grateful I grabbed the chance to go out with him, for it means starting our love story.

Looking at those photo cards one by one felt like revisiting every moment we shared together. Each photo holds a memory that reminds me how our story slowly unfolded from that first day until now. I didn't expect that something so simple could make me feel so emotional and grateful at the same time. That birthday surprise will surely remain one of the moments I will always remember, not just because of the gifts, but because of the love and effort behind them.
