I think this is true with a lot of games. We seemed to have hit a wall of realism about that time and many attempts to improve on an already great system have kind of flopped. I don't have any specific examples of this but I think things achieved such a massive boost in realism 10 years ago that the only thing they would really do was make it faster.

You can only get so real, that's true. I've been seeing a lot about Senua 2 have some of the most realistic character animations ever. It just released and is raising the bar further for the industry. Even that brand new game with gorgeous graphics is comparable to Ryse in some ways.
