Getting To Know Me
It’s a pleasure to be here. My name is Tayo Aminat Oredola-Elegbede, a 36-year-old mother of two, living with sickle cell disorder. I consider myself a proud citizen of West Africa, with roots that span across Nigeria and Ghana. Living in both countries has enriched my appreciation for the beautiful diversity of our continent, something I deeply cherish and consider unique.
Professionally, I am a trained journalist with over seven years of experience in the Nigerian media landscape, both in conventional and online platforms. I am a passionate lover of nature and a firm admirer of God’s might, as reflected in His wondrous creations. I also love traveling, even though I haven’t yet had the opportunity to explore as much as I would love to.
As someone living with sickle cell disorder, I understand first-hand the realities and challenges that come with surviving and thriving in a society that often misunderstands chronic health conditions. Over the years, I’ve lent my voice to creating awareness and advocating for the well-being of fellow warriors, as we fondly call ourselves.
I was very active in advocacy during my journalism career, until sickle cell complications sadly forced me to step back. Lol. However, in the past four years, I’ve found myself even more deeply rooted in advocacy, raising louder awareness around this chronic blood disorder with one clear goal: I want sickle cell to end with me.
This passion gave birth to the OBA OREDOLA SICKLE CELL FOUNDATION, a nonprofit organization I founded in memory of my late younger brother, who passed away from sickle cell complications ten years ago at the age of 24. The foundation is committed to closing the gap of ignorance surrounding the disorder and providing support to those who suffer from it.
This new path has allowed me to continue practicing journalism in a unique and purposeful way, one that truly feels aligned with my calling.
In addition to advocacy, I am also a creative entrepreneur. I design bags and accessories using African prints, bake, create content, and host a radio program dedicated to sickle cell awareness. I’m also the proud brand owner of Xclusive Drinks & Natural Ventures, a company focused on producing healthy natural drinks.
Academically, I hold a First Class Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Education, Winneba, Ghana, and I am currently concluding my MSc at the University of Lagos, Akoka, Nigeria.
I’m tech-savvy, emotionally intelligent, a great listener, and a dedicated team player. My desire to write again, despite ongoing health challenges, led me to a conversation with Hiver @chatsunny who introduced me to this incredible platform. I'm also grateful to Hiver @adeife2 for delegating for me to have a great start here.. I am truly grateful to both of them.
I’m truly excited about this new chapter. I look forward to growing, learning, unlearning, and relearning together with you all.
Warm regards,
Tayo Aminat Oredola-Elegbede
