Token Engineering: A Primer

Token engineering is an emerging field that applies engineering principles and methods to design, build and analyze tokenized ecosystem.

These are systems that use digital tokens to coordinate the behaviour and interactions of various agents, such as humans, machines and organizations, in a decentralized and transparent way.

Token engineering draws from various disciplines such as software engineering, mathematics, economics, machine learning, law, governance, and more. It aims to create robust, secure and sustainable token systems that can achieve desired outcomes and align incentives amongst all stakeholders in an equitible manner.

Why Token Engineering ?

Well as tokenized systems become highly complex, adaptive and nonlinear, they start displaying unusual and unpredictable behaviour.

Such systems are often deployed on public DLTs such as blockchains, that are open open and permissionless, which means they can be subject to various risks such as the following:

Attack vectors: Tokenized systems can be exploited by malicious actors/agents who seek to manipulate the system for their own selfish gains or harm others. For example attackers can launch Sybil attacks, 50% attack etc on token systems.

Coordination failures: Token systems can fail to achieve their intended goals or optimal outcomes due to lack of information, misaligned incentives etc.

Regulatory uncertainty: Token systems can face legal and regulatory challenges due to their novel and disruptive nature.

Token engineering aims to address these challenges by applying rigorous and systematic approach to design and verify token systems before they're deployed on the blockchain. It also enables continuous monitoring and improvement of token systems after they're launched by using complex data analysis, simulation and auditing tool.
