The next coin to be revealed by the ROYAL MINT from their 2024, annual coin set is the beautiful and stunningly crafter The 200th Anniversary of the National Gallery £2 coin. This annual set is shaping up to be the most desirable and collectable in a good few years, and with its release date set for 9am tomorrow (02/01/24), its sure to sell out fast.

Crafted by the talented designer, engraver, and printmaker Edwina Ellis, the captivating design adorning the UK £2 coin in celebration of the National Gallery's 200th anniversary is a true work of art. Ellis skillfully captures the iconic National Gallery building at the heart of the coin, elegantly framed by the anniversary itself in a graceful semi-circle.

Adding a touch of profound significance, the edge inscription bears the words 'MAIORVM GLORIA POSTERIS LVMEN EST,' translating to 'The glory of our ancestors is a light to our descendants.' Interestingly, this phrase is extracted from the ceiling above the main staircase in the Wilkins Building of the Gallery, embodying a powerful message. It articulates the timeless idea that the brilliance of past artists serves as a guiding light for the creatives of the future, embodying a foundational principle of the National Gallery. In this commemorative coin, history, artistry, and inspiration converge to tell a story that transcends time.

From its inception, the National Gallery has been on a remarkable mission to democratise art, ensuring its accessibility to all. The collection, now boasting an impressive array of over 2,300 paintings, traces its roots back to a modest start with 38 pictures acquired from the financier John Julius Angerstein by parliament in April 1824.

Initially showcased in Angerstein's residence at 100 Pall Mall, serving as a temporary gallery, it soon became evident that this space was inadequate compared to other esteemed national galleries like the Louvre in Paris. In 1838, the National Gallery found a new abode in Trafalgar Square, strategically chosen for its central location, and has remained a beacon of artistry ever since.

The National Gallery has weathered the sands of time, standing tall as an artistic epicenter since 1824, even enduring the trials of the Second World War. Promptly evacuating its precious paintings at the outbreak of the war, the Gallery faced the brunt of nine direct bombings between October 1940 and April 1941.
