Conceived by Sir William Hillary , inspired by the tragic shipwrecks along the Manx coast, the Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck was the initial moniker of what would later be known as the RNLI in 1854.

Since its inception, the RNLI has stood as a charitable organisation, sustained by the generosity of donations and the courage of its countless volunteers. Operating tirelessly 24/7, braving all weather conditions, the service has been a beacon of hope, saving an astounding tally of over 144,000 lives.

The inception of the first purpose-built lifeboat in 1785, designed by Lionel Lukin, marked the beginning of the RNLI's legacy. Over the course of two centuries the organisation has been at the forefront of pioneering life-saving techniques at sea. The introduction of the motor lifeboat in 1905 revolutionised the charity's capabilities, adapting to the ever-evolving field of boat engineering. From the unique, fast motor lifeboat in 1930 to the implementation of inflatable lifeboats in 1963, designed to access areas close to shore, cliffs, and caves, the RNLI has consistently embraced innovation.

In 2001, the RNLI expanded its reach, initiating lifeguard patrols that now span over 240 beaches across the UK and Channel Islands. Lifeguards, equipped to provide in-water rescue, first aid, and impart crucial water safety information, play a pivotal role in preventing incidents and ensuring the safety of beachgoers. The RNLI's journey, spanning two centuries, showcases not only its historical roots but also its continuous commitment to evolving and enhancing life-saving capabilities on and around the water.
