Kugani Kutuba 200 - Okinawan proverbs book | Livro de provérbios okinawanos [EN/PT]
As I've mentioned in previous posts and drawings published here, last year I started studying Okinawan, the mother tongue of my grandparents, considered by the UN to be endangered but still spoken in Brazil, mainly in the cities of São Paulo and Campo Grande. One of my classmates – the classes are at the Okinawa Association of Vila Carrão – lent me this book: 黄金言葉 ウチナーンチュが伝えることわざ200編 "Kugani kutuba (golden words) - 200 proverbs transmitted by the Uchinanchu (Okinawans)".
Como já comentei em posts e desenhos publicados aqui antes, no ano passado comecei a estudar okinawano, a língua materna dos meus avós, considerada pela ONU como ameaçada de desaparecimento mas que ainda é falada no Brasil, nas cidades de São Paulo e Campo Grande principalmente. Uma das colegas de classe - as aulas são na Associação Okinawa de Vila Carrão - me emprestou este livro: 黄金言葉 ウチナーンチュが伝えることわざ200編 "Kuganí kutubá (palavras douradas) - 200 provérbios transmitidos pelos utchinantchus (okinawanos)".
In fact, the Okinawan language, Uchinaguchi, is one of the six Ryukyuan languages, spoken on the largest and most populous island in the Ryukyu archipelago, which before becoming a province of Japan was the center of an independent kingdom. Although I studied Japanese, my level of knowledge of the language wouldn't be sufficient to read the book, so to decipher it I'm using artificial intelligence, mainly Google Notebook LM, Gemini and the Chinese Kimi.
Na verdade a língua okinawana, utchinagutchí, é uma das 6 línguas ryukyuanas, falada na maior e mais populosa ilha do arquipélago de Ryukyu, que antes de virar província do Japão foi centro de um reino independente. Apesar de ter estudado japonês, meu nível de conhecimento da língua não seria suficiente para ler o livro, por isso para decifrá-lo estou usando inteligência artificial, Google Notebook LM, Gemini e a chinesa Kimi, principalmente.
Despite the hard work, I'm finding this new reading process fun. After all, we know about the hallucinations of AIs, and with a language that's not widely used and threatened with extinction, every precaution in checking sources is worthwhile. In the book, besides the most well-known sayings, like the one on the photo above:
行逢りば兄弟, 何 隔てぃぬ あが
Ichariba choodee, nuu fidatinu aga
Once we meet, we are brothers and sisters. What can separate us?
There are also several other interesting ones, such as:
貴所ぬ 屁ん, 我ん屁
Undjunu fiin, wan fii
If you fart, I fart too.

Apesar da trabalheira estou achando divertido este novo processo de leitura, afinal de contas sabemos das alucinações das IAs, e com uma língua pouco usada e ameaçada de desaparecimento, todo cuidado em checar as fontes é pouco. No livro, além dos ditados mais conhecidos, como o da pg da foto:
