The Russian Fyodor Dostoevsky, considered one of the greatest writers of all time, is best known for his novels such as Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov. This Brazilian edition, titled "Beginning and End," brings together in one book the works "White Nights," written early in his career in 1848, and "The Eternal Husband," published in 1870, when the author was already at his peak.

O russo Fiódor Dostoiévski, considerado um dos maiores escritores de todos os tempos, é bastante conhecido por seus romances como Crime e Castigo e Irmãos Karamazov. Esta edição brasileira com o título "Início e Fim" reuniu em um livro as obras "Noites Brancas", escrita no início de sua carreira em 1848, e "O eterno marido", publicada em 1870, quando o autor já estava no auge.

I found the book in the "book crossing" area of my building, a place where neighbors leave books they've already read, making them available for anyone who wants to borrow them for free. It was great to find this book; the translator mentions that the two works were also selected because they suggest a possible connection between the two stories, with the main character in his youth and innocence in "White Nights" and already mature, cynical, and disdainful in "The Eternal Husband."

Encontrei o livro no espaço de "book crossing" do prédio onde moro, um lugar onde os vizinhos deixam livros já lidos e ficam a disposição de quem quiser pegar pra ler, gratuitamente. Foi legal encontrar este livro, o tradutor comenta que as 2 obras foram selecionadas tb por insinuar uma possível ligação entre 2 histórias, com o personagem principal em sua juventude e inocência em "Noites Brancas" e já maduro, cínico e desdenhoso em "O Eterno Marido".

"White Nights" refers to summer in Saint Petersburg, where, due to its proximity to the Arctic, the days are bright until midnight. During his nightly, yet illuminated, strolls, the character encounters a woman alone, something not very common in the time period in which the story takes place. Interestingly, "White Nights" is also the name of an event in Paris – Nuit Blanche – which inspired the Virada Cultural here in São Paulo, Brazil. In these cases, there are shows and cultural activities spread throughout the cities all day long, at times that extend into the early hours of the morning during the weekend. Even far from the former Tsarist imperial Russian city, the lights and movement of the artistic performances can maybe give an idea of the atmosphere in which Dostoevsky's novel takes place.

"Noites Brancas" faz referência ao verão em São Petersburgo, onde devido a sua proximidade com o Ártico os dias são claros até meia-noite. Em seus passeios noturnos, mas iluminado, o personagem encontra uma mulher sozinha, algo não muito comum na época em que passa a história. Uma curiosidade: noites brancas tb é o nome de um evento em Paris - Nuit Blanche - que inspirou o Virada Cultural de São Paulo. Nestes casos são show e atividades culturais espalhadas pelas cidades, em horários que atravessam a madrugada durante o fim de semana. Mesmo distante da antiga cidade kzarista imperial russa, de repente as luzes e movimento dos espetáculos artísticos podem dar uma ideia da atmosfera em que se passa o romance de Dostoiévski.

In "The Eternal Husband," although the characters are in the same Saint Petersburg, the city is shown from its bureaucratic and administrative side, as well as being a place that today could be defined as ideal for networking with wealthy and possibly influential people. Cynicism and dissimulation guide the story, showcasing the author's skill in his psychological plots involving the deepest intentions of each character. As a late reader of Dostoevsky, I found it sensational to discover that his style apparently influenced writers I admired before him, such as the Brazilian journalist/columnist and playwright Nelson Rodrigues.

Já em "O Eterno Marido", apesar dos personagens estarem na mesma São Petersburgo, a cidade é mostrada pelo seu lado burocrático e administrativo, além de local que hoje em dia poderia ser definido como ideal para fazer "networking" com pessoas ricas e possivelmente influentes. O cinismo e dissimulação guiam a história, mostrando a habilidade do autor nas suas tramas psicológicas envolvendo as intenções mais profundas de cada personagem. Como um leitor tardio do Dostoievski, achei sensacional descobrir que seu estilo aparentemente influenciou escritores de quem sou fã antes dele, como o cronista e dramaturgo brasileiro Nelson Rodrigues.
