Masterpieces of Brazilian art deco | Obras primas do art déco brasileiro [EN/PT]

Despite being characteristic of the 1920s and 1930s, the Art Deco style is one of my favorites. This aesthetic is also called streamline, due to its curves and long horizontal lines, especially in works from its most popular period. It was adopted in architecture, sculpture, graphic arts, and furniture and object design. In Brazil, it continued to be used until the 1940s, both in huge constructions or in more modest homes and small buildings.

The style is best known for skyscrapers like the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings in New York and the hotels in South Beach, Miami. In Brazil, the examples in Goiânia (a city planned and built to be the state capital in the 1930s) are famous, and here in São Paulo where I live, we also have striking Art Deco buildings, such as the Farol Santander (Altino Arantes Building), the Edifício Saldanha Marinho, Banco de São Paulo, the Jockey Club, etc.

I appreciate almost everything and collect images of this style on Pinterest, but what I consider most picturesque and appealing about this style in Brazil are the everyday objects, some still in use today. The "americano" cup, the glass made sugar recipient with a lid and metal spout, the round light bulb cover, and the rotating candy bowl.

I took my duty in following the Challenge: Drawing (almost) every day on iPad and created this art using these objects. I also forgot to include the Hydra brand flush valve, a round, female-breast-shaped toilet that used to be ubiquitous in all Brazilian bathrooms until decades ago. I left this object out for now, as I thought it wouldn't fit in with the scene, elements of a nostalgic bar or restaurant, probably hinting at a possible white marble counter.

Apesar de ser característico dos anos 20 e 30 do século passado, o estilo art déco é um dos meus preferidos. Esta estética tb é chamada de streamline, por causa das curvas e linhas horizontais longas, principalmente nas obras do seu período mais popular. Foi adotada na arquitetura, escultura, artes gráficas e design de móveis e objetos. No Brasil continuou sendo usado até os anos 40, tanto em obras grandiosas quanto casas e prédios mais modestos.

Mais conhecido pelos arranha-céus como o Empire State e o Chrysler Building em Nova York e os hotéis em South Beach, Miami. No Brasil são famosos os exemplares em Goiânia (cidade planejada e construída para sediar a capital do estado nos anos 30) e aqui em São Paulo temos edifícios marcantes do estilo tb, como o Farol Santander (Edifício Altino Arantes), Edifício Saldanha Marinho, Banco de São Paulo, Jóquei Clube, etc.

Aprecio quase tudo e coleciono imagens do estilo no Pinterest, mas o que considero mais pitoresco e marcante deste visual em nossas terras são os objetos do dia a dia, alguns encontrados em uso até hoje. O copo americano, açucareiro de video com tampa e bico metálico, o lustre redondo e o baleiro giratório.

Aproveitei o Desafio: Desenhando (quase) todo dia no iPad e fiz esta arte com estes objetos, faltou incluir a válvula de descarga Hydra, redonda, em forma de seios feminino e onipresente em todos os banheiros brasileiros até décadas atrás. Deixei este objeto de fora, por enquanto, pois achei que não ia combinar na cena, elementos de um nostálgico bar ou restaurante, insinuando até um possível balcão de mármore branco.
