Did You Ever Dislike An Author But Later Enjoyed Them?

Hello everyone,
In today's article is about a common question most of the people ask to all Authors,

Did You Ever Dislike An Author But Later Enjoyed Them?

Lets Get Started!

No, I can honestly say not. Probably the reason is that if their genre doesn't
interest me I wouldn't open the book, and if their work offends me by being of
poor quality, I toss it to the side and move on to something/someone else.
Likewise, if an author disappoints me I won't go back to more of his or her
work. The other thing I will say is that it doesn't matter how popular the
author is, or how many great reviews they have; if I don't like their work I
know exactly why. I've found that there are a lot of really popular authors who
don't satisfy my standards.

So, by now you probably understand why some people consider me arrogant; I
won't dispute their opinion, but that high regard for myself and my opinions
comes from a life of performance. If I don't like something there usually is a
good reason. Let me give you an example from an actual, highly published
author. She wrote in a passage something very much like this: "And the dog ran
alongside the bicycle, picked up a stick in it's mouth, and jambed it into the
spokes of the spinning wheels, causing the rider to fall."

In this instance, the writer's grammar and sentence structure was fine, but
she had a dog do something no dog would spontaneously do, and that kind of
thing really bugs me. I do extensive research into my books, and when an author
is lazy with facts I find that professionally unforgivable.

Another rule that I have is that I do my best NOT to insert myself between the
reader and the story. Let me give you another example; a good friend told me
about a book that he found amazing. I looked it up and there were thousands of
five star reviews. There were equally as many one star reviews, which I found
very curious. Now, as I make my comments, please keep in mind that this is a
very highly acclaimed author, and this is my personal opinion.

As I started to read the book my initial impression was that it was the worst
piece of work I had every read. As an author who appreciates a good wordsmith,
it was painful to read because the bad grammar and structure distracted me so
much that I couldn't enjoy the story. I could only come to the conclusion that
the author, who is reputed to be highly intelligent, deliberately violated
every rule of writing and sentence structure in order to make some creative
point. I missed it. While I appreciate that the author has this right, it is my
opinion that intentionally writing badly, such that your reader struggles to
understand and follow the story, is a discredit to the craft. I struggled
through four chapters before literally throwing it in the garbage.

I understand that most readers are not as critial or demanding as I am. With
my own work, as I've interacted with Beta readers, I sometimes I find issues
during editing that have not been questioned by the readers. When asked why
they didn't mention it in their comments, they often answered that they were
enjoying the story and the characters so much that they didn't notice. That was
a lesson I learned; choose your beta readers for what they bring to the
development of your craft; some are for story affirmation, others are to
correct your grammar.

So, back to the original question, I usually either love a piece of work or I
set it aside.

THANK YOU for your time reading my articles today! if you have any ideas feel free to comments.
Your honest reviews is much appreciated.
