Israel Accuses UN of Cooperating With Hamas And Other Refugee Funding Problems
The UN's Middle East agency has fired several of its employees amid an investigation into their involvement in Hamas attacks on Israel.
At the same time, the US suspended all payments to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA). The US justified its action on the grounds of "extreme concern" over suspicions that UN employees may have known about, prepared for, and participated in terrorist attacks on Israel. In addition to the US, Canada and Australia suspended funding.
UNRWA faced a shortage of funds for its operations as early as last June. And after the outbreak of armed conflict, UNRWA's infrastructure was attacked by Israel, killing dozens of its members, forcing the organisation to leave the Gaza Strip.
Since 7 October, 101 UN staff members have been killed in the line of duty. This is the highest number of UN staff deaths ever recorded in a single conflict.
Twelve UNRWA employees are suspected of Hamas involvement and funding for the entire organisation, on whose work hundreds of thousands of Palestinians depend, has been cut off.
