Here again on this journey through the books that have come into my hands and that not only tell stories, but also force us to face reality head-on. On this occasion I want to share with you a harsh, necessary, and deeply brave work, Operation Massacre, by the Argentine writer and journalist Rodolfo Wal informaciónsh, first published in 1957.

This is not a work of fiction. It is a book born from investigation, risk, and a commitment to the truth. Walsh wrote Operation Massacre at a time when it was still dangerous to say what he tells us here. He did it without protection, without the backing of power, and without guarantees. He did it because he understood that silence is also a form of complicity.

The book reconstructs one of the darkest episodes in Argentine history: the clandestine execution of civilians in 1956, during the military dictatorship that overthrew the government of Juan Domingo Perón. People detained without trial were taken to a rubbish dump and executed. Some, incredibly, survived. From those survivors, Walsh begins to investigate and discovers that the State had lied to everyone.

What makes Operation Massacre great is not only what it tells, but how it tells it. Walsh combines the rigor of journalism with the force of narrative. He presents the victims as real human beings, with names, families, jobs, dreams. They are not figures; they are people.

Reading this book today is still a powerful experience. It reminds us that political violence is not a thing of the past, that the truth always bothers those in power, and that telling it has a price. It has worldwide relevance today, since the world is increasingly convulsive and situations like those described here could be repeated in many places right now.

The sentence with which the investigation begins is a bomb. Not because it announces an impossible fact, but because it reveals that the official story is falling apart. From there on, the whole book is a fight against oblivion, against lies, and against fear.

Walsh does not write from comfort. He writes from moral urgency. Operation Massacre is one of the first examples of what we now call “nonfiction novel,” even before Truman Capote published In Cold Blood. But here there is no glamour or distance; there is mud, blood, fear, and dignity.

Rodolfo Walsh was born in 1927 in Argentina. Journalist, writer, and political activist. Throughout his life he denounced injustice, corruption, and crimes of the State. In 1977, during the last military dictatorship, he was kidnapped and disappeared after publishing his famous Open Letter to the Military Junta. His body never appeared. His life and his work are united by the same line: to tell the truth at any cost.

Reading this book today is an act of conscience. It forces us to ask ourselves what we would do in times of fear. Whether we would look the other way or whether we would be capable of writing, speaking, and pointing things out. Of defending those principles of justice.

As in previous posts, I share photos of my physical copy. Reading a book like this on paper, feeling its weight, turning its pages slowly, makes the impact even greater. It is not a comfortable read, but it is deeply necessary.

Nuevamente por aquí en el recorrido por los libros que han llegado a mis manos y que no solo cuentan historias, sino que también nos obligan a mirar de frente la realidad. En esta ocasión quiero compartir con ustedes una obra dura, necesaria y profundamente valiente, Operación Masacre, del escritor y periodista argentino Rodolfo Walsh, publicada por primera vez en 1957.

No es un libro de ficción. Éste es un libro que nace de la investigación, del riesgo y del compromiso con la verdad. Walsh escribió Operación Masacre cuando todavía era peligroso decir lo que aquí él nos dice. Lo hizo y no tenía protección, ni respaldo del poder y ni garantías. Lo hizo porque entendió que el silencio también es una forma de complicidad.

El libro reconstruye uno de los episodios más oscuros de la historia argentina, los fusilamientos clandestinos de civiles en 1956, durante la dictadura militar que derrocó al gobierno de Juan Domingo Perón. Personas detenidas sin juicio fueron llevadas a un basural y ejecutadas. Algunos, increíblemente, sobrevivieron. A partir de esos sobrevivientes, Walsh empieza a investigar y descubre que el Estado le había mentido a todos.

Lo que hace grande a Operación Masacre no es solo lo que cuenta, sino cómo lo cuenta. Walsh mezcla el rigor del periodismo con la fuerza de la narrativa. Presenta a las víctimas como seres humanos reales, con nombres, familias, trabajos, sueños. No son cifras, son personas.

Leer este libro hoy sigue siendo una experiencia fuerte. Nos recuerda que la violencia política no es cosa del pasado, que la verdad siempre molesta al poder, y que contarla tiene un precio. Tiene una vigencia mundial hoy en día ya que el mundo está cada vez más convulso y situaciones como las descritas aquí podrían repetirse en muchos lugares actualmente.

Frase, con la que comienza la investigación, es una bomba. No porque anuncia un hecho imposible, sino que revela que el relato oficial se está cayendo. A partir de ahí, todo el libro es una lucha contra el olvido, contra la mentira y contra el miedo.

Walsh no lo escribe desde la comodidad. Escribe desde la urgencia moral. Operación Masacre es uno de los primeros ejemplos de lo que hoy llamamos “novela de no ficción”, antes incluso de que Truman Capote publicara A sangre fría. Pero aquí no hay glamour ni distancia, hay barro, sangre, miedo y dignidad.

Rodolfo Walsh nació en 1927 en Argentina. Periodista, escritor y militante político. A lo largo de su vida denunció injusticias, corrupción y crímenes de Estado. En 1977, durante la última dictadura militar, fue secuestrado y desaparecido después de publicar su famosa Carta abierta a la Junta Militar. Su cuerpo nunca apareció. Su vida y su obra están unidas por una misma línea, decir la verdad cueste lo que cueste.

Como en publicaciones anteriores, comparto fotos de mi ejemplar físico. Leer un libro así en papel, sentir su peso, pasar sus páginas con calma, hace que el impacto sea aún mayor. No es una lectura cómoda, pero sí profundamente necesaria.
