Hello, friends of #HiveBookClub. It is my first post in this community, I’ve spent a few weeks thinking about where to start and I am truly a reader of any literary genre, but I decided to return to the beginnings, to when I was a child and began to discover the world through reading. That’s why I want to talk to you about a book that, although it was published more than a century ago, remains surprisingly current and profoundly necessary, Kazan, perro lobo, by the writer James Oliver Curwood (1878-1937). A story that combines adventure, nature, and primary emotions, and that today, in the midst of a fast and digital world, deserves a special place.

Curwood was an American writer born in Owosso, Michigan, a small town surrounded by forests that would deeply shape his literary sensitivity. He developed a fascination for the wild, which led him to repeatedly travel to northern Canada, where he lived alongside hunters from native towns. The human and respectful way in which he portrays animals in his stories is moving. His direct contact with wolves, sled dogs, and the harsh landscapes of the north was the main influence behind works such as Kazan and Baree, son of Kazan. Curwood died relatively young, but he left a literary legacy that remains alive thanks to his ability to show the deep connection between human beings and nature.

When I was in primary school, my father was a teacher in the same school and that meant we traveled together, because the school was far from home. Many times I had to wait for him when he had a meeting, and I waited in the school library. It was there that I discovered Kazan perro lobo and many other books. Kazan is a divided being, half dog, half wolf. That duality becomes the axis of the entire novel. Curwood immerses us in the cold territories of northern Canada, where nature is not just a setting but another character. There, Kazan must survive between two forces, the call of freedom and his loyalty to humans.

The narrative takes us from snowy landscapes to extreme situations where life or death is decided. Kazan faces trials that shape his character, leading him to discover which side he wants to honor. The figure of Grey Wolf is essential, a she-wolf who complements the protagonist and deepens his inner conflict.

Although it may seem like a simple adventure story, Kazan is much more than that. It is a realistic and honest portrayal of the struggle for survival, loyalty, the violence of the wild world and, at the same time, the tenderness that can arise even in the most inhospitable places.

The author reminds us that nature has its rules, and that life is made of instinctive decisions. The reader ends up empathizing deeply with Kazan even when his actions respond to his animal nature. But we are that as well.

In these times where screens consume us, where the speed of everyday life barely leaves space to pause. In the midst of noise, reading a work like Kazan becomes an almost revolutionary act.

In an era dominated by the digital, the descriptions of forests, snow, wolves, and silence remind us of a purer, more elemental world, where life does not depend on algorithms but on instinct. That is reconnecting with nature.

Kazan is metaphor, mirror, and question. Just like him, we live in two worlds between what we want to be and what others want from us.

Loyalty, survival, courage, freedom. Values that today seem to fade, but remain at the heart of every human story. This is a book that builds character, ideal for young people but also for adults who need to reconnect with stories that do not underestimate the reader’s intelligence. It is direct, honest, without unnecessary embellishments. This is a public domain book, more than 100 years since its publication but in my opinion very necessary for today’s youth. If you have a child or relative or even a friend, you can recommend Kazan, even if you don’t find the book in physical format, it doesn’t matter, you can also find it digitally. The following fragment is one of my favorites.

"In the heart of Kazan there was something stronger than fear and firmer than fury, loyalty. Even in the midst of danger, that force pushed him to protect what he loved, even if he did not understand why."

In those years I had many pets, especially a dog that I named Kazan and who accompanied me for more than 10 years.

Kazan, perro lobo is one of those books that, more than being read, are felt. You end up with cold on your skin, with the howl of the wind in your ears, and with the strange feeling of having traveled to a place where few works can take us today. In times where modern life disconnects us from what is essential, returning to stories like this is a reminder that literature remains a refuge for many.

Es mi primer post en esta comunidad, llevo unas semanas pensando por dónde empiezo y realmente soy un lector de cualquier género literario, pero decidí volver a los inicios cuando era niño y comencé a descubrir el mundo, a través de la lectura. Por eso quiero hablarles de un libro que, aunque fue publicado hace más de un siglo, sigue siendo sorprendentemente actual y profundamente necesario, Kazan, perro lobo, del escritor James Oliver Curwood (1878-1937). Una historia que combina aventura, naturaleza y emociones primarias, y que hoy, en medio de un mundo acelerado y digital, merece un espacio especial.

Curwood fue un escritor estadounidense nacido en Owosso, Michigan, un pequeño pueblo rodeado de bosques que marcaría profundamente su sensibilidad literaria. Desarrolló una fascinación por la naturaleza salvaje, lo que lo llevó a viajar repetidamente al norte de Canadá, donde convivió con cazadores de pueblos nativos. El autor nos recuerda que la naturaleza tiene sus reglas, y que la vida está hecha de decisiones instintivas. El lector termina por empatizar profundamente con Kazan aun cuando sus acciones responden a su naturaleza animal. Pero es que también somos eso.

En estos tiempos donde las pantallas nos consumen, donde la velocidad del día a día apenas deja espacio para detenernos. En medio del ruido, la lectura de una obra como Kazan se vuelve un acto casi revolucionario.

En una era dominada por lo digital, las descripciones de bosques, nieve, lobos y silencio nos recuerdan un mundo más puro, más elemental, donde la vida no depende de algoritmos sino de instinto. Eso es reconectarnos con la naturaleza.

Lealtad, supervivencia, valentía, libertad. Valores que hoy parecen diluirse, pero que siguen siendo el corazón de toda historia humana. Este es un libro que forma carácter, es ideal para jóvenes, pero también para adultos que necesitan reencontrarse con historias que no subestiman la inteligencia del lector. Es directo, honesto, sin adornos innecesarios. Este es un libro de dominio público, con más de 100 años de publicado pero a mi juicio muy necesario en los jóvenes de hoy. Si tienes un hijo o familiar o incluso un amigo, puedes recomendarle Kazan, incluso si no encuentras el libro en formato duro, no importa también lo puedes encontrar digital. El siguiente fragmento es uno de mis favoritos.

"En el corazón de Kazan había algo más fuerte que el miedo y más firme que la furia, la lealtad. Aun en medio del peligro, esa fuerza lo empujaba a proteger aquello que amaba, aunque no comprendiera por qué."

En esos años tuve muchas mascotas, en especial un perro al que llame Kazan y me acompaño por más de 10 años.

Kazan, perro lobo es uno de esos libros que, más que leerse, se sienten. Terminas con frío en la piel, con el aullido del viento en los oídos y con una sensación extraña de haber viajado a un lugar donde pocas obras logran llevarnos hoy. En tiempos donde la vida moderna nos desconecta de lo esencial, volver a historias como esta es un recordatorio de que la literatura sigue siendo un refugio para muchos.
