Zuckerberg showed off a prototype of new AR glasses, Orion AI. Lightweight, "neural" tracking, limited field of view. But still "meh" as a monitor replacement in my opinion. Here is why.

Im Vergleich zu den 500 g bis 1 kg, die man sonst mit VR-Headsets am Kopf tragen muss, ist das eine wahre Erleichterung.

Allerdings gibt es wie immer viele Trade-Offs bei AR. Man kann durch die Brille durchsehen, was ebenfalls eine große Verbesserung zu Pass-Through-AR ist.

Aber das Sichtfeld der eingeblendeten Layer ist mit 70 Grad relativ klein. Die Quest 3 hat im Vergleich ein horizontales Sichtfeld von 110 Grad.

Bei AR fehlen mir im Moment auch immer noch die Killer-Apps. Bei VR hat man VR-Games (und VR-Porn) als Killer-App, aber wozu braucht man AR?

Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, dass man eine AR-Brille den ganzen Tag als Monitorersatz trägt, um damit Word-Dokumente zu bearbeiten oder um damit 2D-Filme anzuschauen, wie es Apple mit der Apple Vision Pro bewirbt. Was ist da der Mehrwert?

Als Notlösung vielleicht, wenn man keinen Monitor dabei hat. Aber denke ein echter Monitor ist im Moment noch ein viel besseres Erlebnis als eine AR-Brille zu verwenden.

Was sagt ihr zur neuen AR-Brille von Meta? Was könnten potentielle Killer-Apps für AR sein? Oder werden die Brillen wirklich einmal als Monitorersatz taugen, wenn sie noch kleiner und leichter werden, was denkt ihr?

Meta presented a prototype of new AR glasses. A major advantage of the Orion glasses is their compact design and low weight of just under 100 grams.

Compared to the 500 g to 1 kg that you usually have to carry on your head with VR headsets, this is a huge relief.

However, as always, there are many trade-offs with AR. You can see through the glasses, which is also a big improvement on pass-through AR.

But the field of view of the displayed layers is relatively small at 70 degrees. In comparison, the Quest 3 has a horizontal field of view of 110 degrees.

However, I'm still missing the killer app for AR at the moment. With VR, you have VR games (and VR porn) as a killer app, but what do you need AR for?

I can't imagine wearing AR glasses all day as a monitor replacement to edit Word documents or watch 2D films, as Apple advertises it with the Apple Vision Pro. What is the added value?

Perhaps as an emergency solution if you don't have a monitor with you. But I think a real monitor is still a much better experience than using AR glasses at the moment.
