Voter ID: gov issued digital ID (ID Austria) not valid in the upcoming Vienna elections
Am Sonntag finden wieder die Gemeinde- und Landtagswahlen in Wien statt. In den Wahllokalen muss man sich anders als in manchen US-Bundestaaten ausweisen. Ausweispflicht, obwohl sie bei Wahlen nicht ganz so streng gehandhabt wird. In der Regel reichen zum Beispiel auch abgelaufene Ausweise, um wählen gehen zu können.
Wichtig ist, dass niemand eine Stimme doppelt abgibt oder für einen Nicht-Wähler wählen geht.
Wie sich jetzt herausstellt, sind die staatlichen, digitalen Ausweise aber ein Problem. Diese E-Ausweise (ID Austria) werden in den Wahllokalen in Wien nämlich nicht anerkannt, da sie nicht überprüft werden können.
Für die Überprüfung wäre nämlich ein privates Smartphone oder vorzugsweise ein Diensthandy notwendig, das anscheinend niemand von der Wahlkommission bereitstellen kann.
Daher werden die digitalen Ausweise bei den Wahlen nicht anerkannt.

The elections in Vienna, Austria, are going to take place again this Sunday. Unlike in some US states, you have to identify yourself at the polling stations wit an ID. Voter ID is required, although it is not quite as strict in elections. Even expired ID cards are usually sufficient to be allowed to vote.
It is important that no one casts a vote twice or votes for a non-voter, however.
As it now turns out, state-issued digital ID certificates are a problem. The electronic ID (ID Austria) are not recognized at polling stations in Vienna as they cannot be verified.
A private smartphone or preferably a work cell phone would be required for verification, which no one from the electoral commission seems to be able to provide.
Therefore, state-issued digital IDs are not recognized as valid in the upcoming election.

Verified ID was required before. Now this problem is due to lack of prior planning.
We live in a digital world, but voting is still done manually. It's incredible.

Tja daran denkt keiner, das die dann mit einem Gerät ausgerüstet werden.
Das ein privates Gerät verwendet wird, fände ich nicht gut.
Immer dieses Henne Ei Problem.
Sehe ich auch so, jedes Wahllokal sollte ein Diensthandy haben, um die digitalen Ausweise kontrollieren zu können und Kontakt zur leitenden Wahlbehörde zu haben. Eigentlich sollte das bereits der Fall sein.
Das würde aber wesentlich länger dauern als den Reisepass visuell zu überprüfen.
Finde ich OK. Wozu gibt es Reisepässe? Die ID Austria ist eher zum Anmelden für Onlineaktivitäten wie am digitalen Finanzamt praktisch und wohl auch dafür gedacht, nicht um sich auf der Straße auszuweisen.
Es gibt eine eigene E-Ausweise App, die dafür gedacht ist, sich ausweisen zu können.
Erinnert mich zu sehr an Gattaca, falls Du den Film gesehen hast.

can't believe on this. but sadly that's true.
It sounds like someone didn't do enough testing. It makes me wonder what they were thinking of doing when they created the IDs.
That suggests a lack of full preparation. Why not find a way to ensure that ID Austria is recognized at polling stations? That'll make things easier.
