Trump hat geliefert und Ross Ulbricht am zweiten Tag seiner Amtszeit begnadigt.

Ross war der Gründer und Erstbetreiber (bis 2013) des Internet-Schwarzmarktes Silk Road, wo vor allem Drogen gegen Bitcoin gehandelt wurden. Eine der ersten realen Anwendungsfälle von Bitcoin. Die Plattform war von 2011 bis 2015 online. Dem FBI gelang es durch Knacken des Tor-Netzwerkes und durch das Einschleusen von Agenten die Plattform zu infiltrieren und abzuschalten.

2015 wurde Ross zu einer zweifachen lebenslänglichen Haftstrafe plus 40 Jahre ohne Möglichkeit einer vorzeitigen Haftentlassung verurteilt. Das ist heftig. Über Hunderttausend Bitcoin wurden beschlagnahmt, wobei der Großteil vermutlich noch im Besitz des Staates sind.

Anfang Januar hatte die Biden-Regierung von den Gerichten grünes Licht bekommen, einen Teil der beschlagnahmten Bitcoin zu veräußern. Damit wollte die Biden-Regierung die Bitcoin-Pläne von Trump, eine nationale Bitcoin-Reserve anzulegen, konterkarieren. Wie viele Bitcoin tatsächlich verkauft wurden, ist aber noch nicht ganz klar. 67 Tausend Bitcoin wurden unlängst auf Coinbase transferiert.

Am 21. Januar 2025 wurde Ross wie im Wahlkampf versprochen von Donald Trump begnadigt.

Trump has delivered and pardoned Ross Ulbricht on his second day in office.

Ross was the founder and first operator (until 2013) of the internet black market Silk Road, where drugs in particular were traded for Bitcoin. One of the first real-life applications of Bitcoin. The platform was online from 2011 to 2015. The FBI managed to infiltrate and shut down the platform by cracking the Tor network and infiltrating agents.

In 2015, Ross was sentenced to two life sentences plus 40 years without the possibility of early release. That is heavy. Over a hundred thousand Bitcoin were confiscated, with the majority presumably still in the possession of the state.

At the beginning of January, the Biden administration was given the green light by the courts to sell some of the seized Bitcoin. In doing so, the Biden administration wanted to counteract Trump's Bitcoin plans to create a national Bitcoin reserve. However, it is not yet entirely clear how many Bitcoin were actually sold. 67 thousand Bitcoin were recently transferred to Coinbase.

On January 21, 2025, Ross was pardoned by Donald Trump as promised during the election campaign.

Da die Strafe meiner Meinung nach unangemessen lamg war, passt das im Ergebnis schon. Warum Ross von einigen gefeiert wird, erschließt sich mir dagegen nicht ganz. Aber vielleicht fehlen mir dazu auch nähere Hintergründe.

Ich hab ja auch heute morgen einen Post dazu gemacht. Was den Verbleib der vielen Zehntausend beschlagnahmten Silk Road Bitcoins angeht….ja das ist ne spannende Frage. Da wird die Trump Administration erstmal recherchieren müssen. Sollten die tatsächlich in den letzten Tagen auch nur teilweise verkauft worden sein wäre das ein schwerer Schlag in Sachen „Bitcoin Reserve“.

He is a software developer who developed an online marketplace for anonymous Bitcoin transactions called Silk Road.
I think he felt it was all about Free people interacting with free people. However, some used it to buy drugs and other illegal activities.
The US Government charged him with facilitating a large number of these crimes by creating the website.
He was sentenced to 40 years to Life in Prison.

It's great to see that he is free. I don't think that was enough compensation for the shit he had to go through, but at least Trump follows through on his word.
