@vikisecrets and @florakese - idk much about VAT in the US, but understand it is added to the bill as a separate charge. I lived in Canada, and there it is called GST (general sales tax) which is different in each province, with Alberta being the lowest at 5%, but most others are between 17 and 20%. In the EU, the listed prices include the VAT, but not so in the USA or Canada, where it is understood by all that VAT-GST will be added. The exchange rate of the € against the US$ is marginal now, with the € only slightly higher. If you do the math, it comes out to about the same price. So no 'conspiracy' of price-gouging here, except that often items are cheaper in Germany than in Austria, and that is indeed price-gouging, which has nothing to do with taxes, but everything with the greed of merchants, particularly wholesalers. Just compare flyers of Aldi in Germany with those of Hofer in Austria. Same company. There seems to be a reason why some companies with Amazon.de do not ship to Austria, because they sell their stuff through other (sister?)-companies to Austria at a higher price.
