Porsche drops out of the DAX. German car industry in a crisis.

Porsche AG will be removed from the DAX, just under three years after its 2022 IPO. The German automotive industry is in crisis.

The DAX is the list of the 40 German companies with the largest market capitalization. The list is updated four times a year, and the next change is due on September 22nd.

Porsche has lost approximately 50% of its market cap since its IPO, 27% YTD, which is huge.

The dropout from the DAX also has a reinforcing negative effect, as funds and ETFs then sell the stock and restructure their portfolios to reflect the changes in the DAX.

The problems facing the German automotive industry are manifold. The transition to electric cars is a major challenge, but in my opinion, the main problem is the high cost of production, raw materials, and energy in Germany. The war in Ukraine has further exacerbated the situation.

Thanks to automation, production in China, and the transition to EVs, cars should become significantly cheaper, as it is the case with all other tech products. German cars, on the other hand, are becoming increasingly unaffordable. And not just in the luxury segment.

One option would be to relocate production up to the mid-range segment to China, while keeping development, branding, and the luxury segment in Germany, thereby retaining a large part of the value added. Similar to what Apple does with its iPhones.

What do you think about Porsche dropping out of the DAX? How could the German automotive industry overcome the crisis?

I wonder what will happen to Porsche with their drop out, now they already lost 50%.
Will they go bankrupt, or will they be taken over by other car manufacturer?
very interesing to see the result for sure, with the global economic uncertainty.

It seems we're becoming less and less competitive in Europe. We'll have to emigrate to China.

I like this car brand and there was a time I only dreamed of owning a porsche, specifically a GT3. I suppose they'll need to readjust and become more multi-national to keep the business going.

It shows how tough the market has become. German automakers need to cut costs and innovate faster, especially with EVs and competition from China, otherwise even the luxury brands won’t stay competitive.

The dropping out of the DAX is a bad news to Germany auto industry but, to overcome the crises implies looking inwards to see where their strength lies. The available option is to find a way to reduce production cost so as to make products attractive, even if it means forming a partnership.

I think they need to make some new innovations by applying the latest technologies

That’s a big fall for Porsche in such a short time. The whole German auto industry is really struggling with costs and the shift to EVs. Moving some production abroad might help, but it’s sad to see such strong brands losing ground.

I think it's hard, but I think its because they didn't do a good job of making anything that stands out compared to their competitors.

A very remarkable article! Porsche's departure from DAX is an important milestone not only for Porsche, but for the entire German automotive industry. The challenges and increasing costs brought about by electric vehicle production seem to be truly creating a profound crisis. The production and automation strategy in China mentioned in your article has great potential for how to shape competition, especially in the middle segment. The impact of Porsche from the DAX on the market is also great, as funds and ETFs are reacting quickly to these changes. It can definitely be a strategic approach for Germany to maintain its strength in the luxury car segment and keep the added value in the production here. Considering that the war in Ukraine has made this situation worse, how the industry will overcome the crisis is a really important question. It's a really good analysis, thanks
