New Mercedes electric GLC and CLA EVs (2026) look more like normal ICE cars again, massive range improvements, turning point for German EV car industry?

Vor Kurzem hat Mercedes-Benz die Zukunft seiner E-Auto-Flotte vorgestellt und die zwei beliebtesten Modelle GLC (SUV) und CLA (Coupé) einem substantiellen EV-Update unterzogen.

Zwei Dinge sind mir bei den neuen elektrischen Modellen sofort aufgefallen. Erstens gefällt mit das Design der neuen EVs aus Deutschland wieder. Es scheint hier zu einem radikalen Umdenken in Stuttgart gekommen zu sein. Das Design des neuen CLA und GLC orientiert sich nämlich wieder stärker an dem klassischen, erfolgreichen Verbrenner-Design und nicht mehr an der weniger erfolgreichen EQ-Serie, die viele als zu eiförmig bzw. "bland" (langweilig) beschrieben haben.

Und der zweite Punkt, der mir positiv aufgefallen ist, ist die stark verbesserte Reichweite. Beide neuen Modelle geben eine WLTP-Reichweite über 700 km an, der neue CLA wirbt sogar mit einem Verbrauch von nur 12.5 kWh/100km, was für ein E-Auto extrem wenig ist, und schafft fast 800 km im WLTP-Test. Irgendwie hat es Mercedes geschafft, die Effizient der neuen E-Autos dramatisch zu erhöhen, da die Batteriekapazität ungefähr gleich geblieben ist.

Unter Real-Bedingungen (inkl. Klima etc.) kann ich mir vorstellen, dass die Autos gute 400 km schaffen, was schon ein sehr guter Wert ist.

Listenpreise fangen beim CLA circa bei 55K und beim GLC vermutlich ab 65K Euro an, wobei man mit einigen Zusatz-Paketen eher bei 70-80K beim GLC landen wird.

Die Preisdifferenz zwischen Verbrenner und E-Auto wird immer kleiner, liegt bei gleichwertigen Mercedes-Modellen aber immer noch bei circa 10-15K Euro über dem Verbrenner.

Was sagt ihr zu den neuen elektrischen GLC und CLA-Modellen von Mercedes? Denkt ihr, dass die deutsche Autoindustrie zumindest im Premium und Luxus-Segment bestehen bleiben kann oder muss es auch hier zu einer radikalen Kostenreduktionen und eventuell einer Verlagerung der Produktion kommen, um preislich mit der chinesischen und amerikanischen Konkurrenz mithalten zu können?

Mercedes-Benz recently unveiled the future of its electric car fleet and gave its two most popular models, the GLC (SUV) and CLA (coupé), a substantial EV update.

Two things immediately struck me about the new electric models. First, I like the design of the new EVs from Germany again. There seems to have been a radical rethink in Stuttgart. The design of the new CLA and GLC is once again more closely based on the classic, successful combustion engine design and no longer on the less successful EQ series, which many have described as too egg-shaped or “bland”, boring.

And the second point that struck me positively is the greatly improved range. Both new models claim a WLTP range of over 700 km (430 miles), with the new CLA even advertising a consumption of only 12.5 kWh/100 km, which is extremely low for an electric car, and achieving almost 800 km (500 miles) in the WLTP test. Somehow, Mercedes has managed to dramatically increase the efficiency of the new electric cars, as the battery capacity has remained roughly the same.

Under real-world conditions (including climate control, etc.), I can imagine that the cars can manage a good 250 miles (400 km), which is already a very good value.

List prices start at around 55K Euro for the CLA and probably 65K for the GLC, although with a few additional packages, you'll end up paying more like 70-80K for the GLC.

The price difference between combustion engines and electric cars is getting smaller and smaller, but for equivalent Mercedes models, it's still around 10-15K more than combustion engines.

What do you think of the new electric GLC and CLA models from Mercedes? Do you think that the German automotive industry can survive, at least in the premium and luxury segment, or will it also have to make radical cost reductions and possibly relocate production in order to compete on price with its Chinese and American rivals?

Es wäre wünschenswert wenn Mercedes wieder in die Spur käme. Immer noch eine starke Marke.

Apart from design, there's still a huge technology gap. European manufactures missed the train in the beginning, and it's almost impossible to catch it up now.

Nicht mein Geschmack, diese Autos :)
Ich glaube nicht, dass die ein Erfolg werden. Wer so viel Geld für ein Auto ausgibt, will auch maximale Freiheit und Flexibilität und nicht von seinem Auto gesagt bekommen, wo er abfahren sollte, um aufzuladen (wie es bei E-Autos passiert).
Die Reichweitenangaben sind sowieso eine Farce und gelten bestenfalls bei Schönwetter und wenn man den Fahrstil anpasst (defensiv, vor Kurve runter vom Gas, etc.) - aber welcher Mercedesfahrer will das schon?
Bestenfalls als Dienstwagen geeignet, falls die Firma Greenwashing betreibt und auf eine E-Wagenflotte, auch für ihr Management, umgestellt hat.

Finde die EU-Regulierung, zum Beispiel der Warnton bei jeder kleinsten Speed-überschreitung, die sich jedes Mal beim Starten neu einschaltet, ist bei den Autos die letzten Jahre eskaliert, dafür kann Mercedes leider nichts. Autos wurden in der EU überreguliert meiner Meinung nach.

The new models look really nice in my opinion. I think the german car industry is still pretty good in the segment of rather expensive and luxurious cars. They should put some focus on smaller and cheaper cars as well, though, in my opinion.
Many people probably can't or just don't want to spend too much money on a new car. If those people want an EV, they don't have much choice but to buy their cars from other, in many cases asian, manufacturers.

My favorite car brand, Mercedes 🥰. Wow, Mercedes really stepped up with these new EVs. The range and efficiency look insane and finally the design at least looks like classic Mercedes again. I'm getting this one as my dream car
