Meta to allow other companies to use their Quest VR operating system (Horizon OS). Big move for VR?

Mark Zuckerberg has surprisingly announced that he will open up the VR operating system of Meta Quest (Horizon OS) to other hardware manufacturers.

Lenovo, Asus and Microsoft (Xbox) have been named as possible partners. These could soon bring new VR headsets onto the market, which would then use the Quest operating system and have access to the Quest Store as well.

I think this is a brilliant move by Meta, as it makes no sense for every hardware manufacturer to develop their own incompatible OS and store.

On the other hand, VR is still a very small niche and the question is whether other hardware manufacturers can even profitably develop their own VR headsets, as VR is unlikely to be mainstream for a long time yet.

Another problem is that a mobile OS like Meta's is simply not powerful enough to run state-of-the-art VR games. That would only be possible with PCVR and the performance of a real gaming PC.

At the moment, the graphics of mobile/standalone VR games are more on a par with smartphone games, but cannot keep up with PC (master race) development (Unreal Engine 5 etc.). This is a huge disappointment, especially for VR enthusiasts.

What do you think about Meta opening up its mobile VR operating system to other hardware manufacturers?

It's pretty funny to me how Meta is trying to lead this industry so hard, but their os is not powerful enough to run "state-of-the-art VR Games"

It's more the hardware that is not powerful enough, VR headsets need to be connected to the PC for full power.

It's always good when there are more options.

It's a good thing as VR never took space, it's been out for years but it's rarely used

It's a smart move for them financially, the best way to make more profits is to move more product. It's a shame the games for VR aren't keeping up with the technology. I think there need to be a lighter VR that's comfortable to make it more universally adopted, and then game might actually catch up with a larger market share. What's your take?

good point, I think the hardware is not there yet, it is simply too uncomfortable to wear a headset for an extended period of time.

I think it's a good move. The VR space isn't that large and I just don't think the userbase is large enough yet. So letting other people take a piece of the cut will give them a reason to advertise and get more people into the space.

That's right, this news is going to be very good for this technology and we'll see more sales in the market now.
