Austria has the highest social expenditure in the world (of all OECD countries).

Was sagt ihr dazu? Wieviel sollte ein Land an Sozialleistungen ausbezahlen? Kann das je genug sein? Wie lässt sich der Pull-Faktor verhindern?

OECD Social Spending

English

According to the latest OECD estimate for 2024, Austria has the highest social spending in the world (of all OECD countries).

Historically, Austria has always been among the top countries and has a very generous social and pension system, which is also included in the statistics.

Public social expenditure comprises cash benefits such as pensions, unemployment and minimum benefits, asylum grants, etc., direct in-kind provision of goods and services, and tax breaks with social purposes.

Social benefits as a percentage of GDP have risen dramatically in recent decades. In the 1960s they amounted to around 15% of GDP and have doubled since then.

According to estimates, Austria spent 31.6%, almost a third of its GDP, on social spending in 2024.

What do you think? How much should a state spend on social programs? Can it ever be enough? How to avoid the pull factor (sylum seekers apply in countries with the highest social spending)?

This is insane, they should not spend that much amount.

This has always struck me as funny, because paper can handle anything. If I double doctors' salaries, I'll double healthcare spending, but will they cure people the same? Twice as fast? Twice as many people?
Money is a debt, not a value—something we always forget.

I dont have a particular max a country should spend. Its up to its people to elect a government that choose strategy. But what I have something against is corruption, spending money on stuff we arent suppose to spend on and building a large class of citizens that gets their money from the state.

Every dollar spent on shit is theft from the collective money collected by taxes etc.

Good point, often gov also overpays 2x-3x when doing something, either because of corruption or inefficiency, or both.

Yeah that also drives me nuts because people seems to just "accept" that. They say like "oh well, when the public sector does stuff it always goes over budget and over time" but no one is ever accountable...

Austria and Finland are close in racing to the top 1 spot.

That much? Wow that's impressive... But there is no limit to get them? Like if you earn too much, you won't get any benefit?

It's a great thing if it really works long term. But what happens in 20 years when it's 50 percent? It will attract people who want to live for free and not pay into the system. California has the same problem in that they give illegal immigrants benefits but they don't contribute cash into the system, which is why the state is in deep, deep debt.

it is important to strengthen Social Programs as it is a good foundation to make the community strong

All the countries are European, where taxes are extremely high. The social system is expensive.

I think it depends, but the social spending shouldn't be that high. It needs to be realistic, and I think its tough when all the asylum seekers want the most benefits. It makes sense to them, but it also burdens the citizens quite a bit. There should be some compromise down the line otherwise people will get fustrated.

High social spending should be encouraged by every country because it is people oriented. That's why I doff my cap for countries such as Australia that are topping the list.

Although high social spending is prone to abuse, like attracting lazy and fraudulent immigrants, that should not stop social spending rather, a watertight control measures should be adopted to check abuse.

Interesting that almost all EU countries top the list, above the 'greatest country in the world'.
Of course you know this old video from many years ago:
