My Prague & Vienna Tour - Part 5: Day Trip To Vienna, The Capital of Austria [ENG-TUR]

As I mentioned in my previous travel posts, I don't like the vacation format that goes between hotel, sea and foods. I want to discover new places at homeland or abroad as much as possible. Before the pandemic, I traveled abroad every year. However, the pandemic caused millions of people, including me, to change their travel plans for at least 2 years. After the pandemic, it was time for me to start traveling abroad. Last year, I did this by going to Thessaloniki, Greece. I made some changes for the third choice of my international travel in this year. I visited the capitals of Czechia and Austria. I will write about my day trip to Vienna, capital of Austria, in the fifth part of my Prague & Vienna travel posts series.

Önceki seyahat yazılarımda da belirttiğim gibi otel, deniz ve yemek arasında geçip giden tatil anlayışını sevmiyorum. Yurtiçinde veya yurtdışında mümkün olduğunca yeni yerler keşfetmek istiyorum. Pandemiden önce her yıl yurtdışı seyahatleri yapan biriydim. Fakat, pandemi benim gibi dünyada milyonlarca insanların seyahat planlarını en az 2 yıl değiştirmesine sebep oldu. Pandemiden sonra benim için artık yurtdışı seyahatlerime başlamanın zamanı gelmişti. Geçen sene bunu Yunanistan’ın Selanik şehrine giderek gerçekleştirdim. Bu yılki üçüncü yurtdışı seyahat tercihimde biraz değişiklik yaptım. Çekya ve Avusturya’nın başkentlerini ziyaret ettim. Prag & Viyana gezi yazısı serimin beşinci bölümünde sizlere, Avusturya’nın başkenti Viyana’ya yaptığım günübirlik geziden bahsedeceğim.

The previous day, I was quite tired after walking around Prague Old Town all day. Since I was going to wake up early the next morning and go to Vienna, the capital of Austria, I came to the hotel early and rested. I was going to go to Vienna by bus and the bus was going to departure at 06:30 in the morning. As the Prague bus terminal was a 20-minute walk away, I woke up at around 05:30 and left the hotel without wasting any time. Since the sun had not yet risen, the streets of Prague Old Town were dark and the it was cold. I arrived at the bus terminal about half an hour in advance and waited for the bus.

Prag otobüs terminali 20 dakika yürüme mesafesinde olduğu için 05:30 gibi uyandım ve zaman kaybetmeden otelden ayrıldım. Daha güneş doğmadığı için Prag Eski Şehir sokakları karanlık ve hava soğuktu. Yaklaşık yarım saat önceden otobüs terminaline geldim ve otobüsü beklemeye başladım.

The bus of Flixbus to Vienna departured on time. I had a long four-hour journey ahead of me. The bus would stop in the Czech cities of Jıhlava and Znojmo, and finally arrive in Vienna. I had chosen the front seat of the double-decker bus. Owing to this, I was able to easily take photos of the pretty and quiet villages and agricultural roads of the Czech Republic and Austria during the four-hour bus journey. At around 11:30, the bus arrived at the Vienna Erdberg International Bus Terminal.

Flixbus’ın Viyana’ya gidecek otobüsü zamanında hareket etti. Önümde dört saatlik uzun bir yolculuk vardı. Otobüs sırasıyla Çekya’nın Jıhlava ve Znojmo şehirlerinde mola verip en son Viyana’ya varacaktı. Çift katlı otobüsün en öndeki koltuğunu seçmiştim. Bu sayede, dört saatlik otobüs yolculuğunda Çekya ve Avusturya’nın şirin ve sakin köyleri ile tarım alanlarının ortasından geçen yolların fotoğrafını rahatça çekebildim. Saat 11:30 gibi otobüs Viyana Erdberg Uluslararsı Otobüs Terminali’ne varmıştı.

My return bus to Prague was at 18:00. Not wasting any time, I took the metro to Vienna city center from the metro stop close to the bus terminal. As I wanted to walk to the center of Vienna, I got off a few stops before arriving in the center of Vienna. The first photos from Vienna were like this:

Since there are approximately 400,000 Turks living in Vienna, it was impossible not to come across a Turkish restaurant. My first impression of Vienna was that it was a modern European city with lots of greenery. I had started walking towards the city center of Vienna. I could see the huge historical buildings of Vienna from afar. There were many Baroque, Gothic, Roman and Modern structures waiting to be seen in the city. The first place that greeted me was the Vienna Technical University. The Catholic St. Charles Church is located close to the university. Again, unfortunately, a part of the church was under restoration. There is an artificial lake or pond in front of the church and a park right across from the church. I can say that people come here to relax and chat. Someone was playing the piano in the park.

Viyana’da yaşayan Türklerin sayısı yaklaşık 400.000 olduğu için bir Türk restorantına rastlamamak imkansızdı. Viyana’daki ilk izlenimim, yeşilin bol olduğu modern bir Avrupa şehri olmasıydı. Viyana şehir merkezine doğru yürümeye başlamıştım. Viyana’nın devasa tarihi yapılarını ilerden görebiliyordum. Şehrin içinde görülmeyi bekleyen Barok, Gothik, Roman ve Modern tarzda yapılmış bir çok yapıt vardı. Beni ilk karşılayan Viyana Teknik Üniversitesi’I oldu. Üniversiteye yakın bir konumda ise Katolik Aziz Charles Kilisesi bulunuyor. Yine benim şansıma kilisenin bir kısmı restorasyon içindeydi. Kilisenin önünde yapay bir göl veya su birikintisi, kilise’nin tam karşısında ise bir park var. İnsanlar buraya kafa dinlemeye ve muhabbet etmeye geliyor diyebilirim. Parkın içinde birisi de piyano çalıyordu.

I continued my walk into the city. Here, I came across the Vienna Music Society's concert hall (Musikverein) and the Albertina Modern Museum buildings. If I had time, I would have liked to go into those buildings.

Şehrin içine doğru yürüyüşüme devam ettim. Burada karşıma Viyana Müzik Topluluğu’nun konser binası ve Albertina Modern Müze binaları çıktı. Zamanım olsaydı bu binalara girmek isterdim.

I arrived at the Karlsplatz area, where Opernring Street is located, one of the city’s central streets with trams running through it. Across the street was a huge building that attracted attention. It was the Vienna State Opera House.

Üzerinde tramvayların geçtiği, şehrin merkezi caddelerinden biri olan Opernring Caddesi’nin bulunduğu Karlsplatz bölgesine gelmiştim. Caddenin karşısında dikkatleri çeken dev bir bina bulunmaktaydı. Burası Viyana Devlet Opera Binası’ydı.

Later, I had started walking towards Schwarzenbergplatz, which is on the right side of Opernring Street. Opernring Street is a very nice street with trees on both sides and trams passing through it. When I turned to the right of the street, I came across Ludwig Viktor's palace. In the middle of the street, there is a statue of Schwarzenberg on horseback, who won the Battle of Leipzig against Napoleon in 1813 and is an important figure in Austrian history. I continued walking down Schwarzenberg Street. There is Schwarzenberg Palace At the end of the street. In front of this palace there are fountains and a monument built in memory of Soviet soldiers. I took some photos and then rested here.

Daha sonra bu caddenin sağ tarafındaki Schwarzenbergplatz bölgesine doğru yürümeye başladım. Sağlı-sollu ağaçlandırmanın yapıldığı üzerinden tramvayların geçtiği çok güzel bir cadde. Caddenin sağına doğru döndüğümde karşıma Ludwig Viktor’un sarayı çıktı. Caddenin ortasında ise 1813’te Napolyon’a karşı Leipzig Savaşı’nı kazanmış ve Avusturya tarihinde önemli bir kişi olan Schwarzenberg’in at üstünde bir heykeli var. Schwarzenberg Caddesi’nin aşağısına doğru yürümeye devam ettim. Caddenin sonunda Schwarzenberg Sarayı bulunmaktadır. Bu sarayın önünde fişkiyeler ve Sovyet askerlerinin anısına yapılan bir anıt var. Burada biraz fotoğraf çekip dinlendim.

Since my time in Vienna was limited, I walked back to Karlsplatz from the street I came from. I passed the Vienna State Opera House again and started walking towards the inner parts of Vienna. Vienna surprised me by exceeding my expectations. As had been to Italy before, I felt like I was walking around an Italian city while visiting Vienna.

Viyana’daki zamanım kısıtlı olduğu için geldiğim caddeden geri Karlsplatz’a doğru yürüdüm. Tekrar Viyana Devlet Opera Binası’nın önünden geçerek Viyana’nın iç taraflarına doğru yürümeye başladım. Viyana beklentimin üstünde çıkarak beni çok şaşırtmıştı. Daha önce İtalya’da bulunduğum için Viyana’yı gezerken kendimi sanki İtalya’nın bir şehrinde geziyor gibi hissettim.

After passing by several churches and colorful buildings, I arrived at the Michaelerplatz entrance of the Hofburg Imperial Palace, built in the 13th century. There are the statues of Hercules and Antaios by Lorenzo Mattiell on the right and left of the entrance and the door leading to the imperial palace. The Michaelerplatz entrance is dome-shaped and on the right you can go to the Sisi Museum, where the personal belongings of Empress Elisabeth are exhibited. At the exit of the museum you come across the huge area where the Imperial Palace was built and which include many squares. The Hofburg Imperial Palace served as the winter palace of the Habsburg Dynasty and the Austro-Hungarian Empire for centuries. Today it is used as the official palace of the President of Austria.

Birkaç kilise ve renkli binaların önünden geçtikten sonra 13. Yüzyılda inşa edilen Hofburg İmparatorluk Sarayı’nın Michaelerplatz girişine geldim. Giriş kapısının ve imparatorluk sarayına açılan kapının sağında ve solunda, Lorenzo Mattiell tarafından yapılmış Herkül ve Antaios heykelleri bulunmaktadır. Michaelerplatz girişi kubbe şeklindedir ve sağ taraftan İmparatoriçe Elisabeth’in kişisel eşyalarının sergilendiği Sisi Müzesi’ne gidilebilmektedir. Müzenin çıkışında İmparatorluk Sarayı’nın kurulu olduğu ve birçok meydanı kapsayan devasa alan karşınıza çıkıyor. Hofburg İmparatorluk Sarayı, Habsburg Hanedanlığı ve Avusturya-Macaristan İmparatorluğuna yüzyıllardır kışlık saray olarak hizmet etmiştir. Bugün ise Avusturya Cumhurbaşkanı’nın resmi sarayı olarak kullanıkmaktadır.

The Hofburg Imperial Palace is like a city in itself, perhaps you may need to spend a whole day to visit it. Since I was running out of time, I left the palace entrance, crossed Burgring Street and arrived at the square where the Vienna Natural History Museum is located. The museum is located on an area of ​​8000 square meters. It is like a university campus. The museum, which opened to visitors in 1890, contains minerals, meteorites that somehow reached the Earth, skeletons or models of many animals from insects to dinosaurs and extinct animals. It is a must-see place for people like me who are interested in nature, archeology and space; however I could not go inside the museum because I was close to the end of my day trip to Vienna.

Hofburg İmparatorluk Sarayı sanki başlı başına bir şehir gibi, gezmek için belki tam bir gün ayırmanız gerekebilir. Benim zamanım azaldığı için sarayın giriş kapısından çıktım, Burgring Caddesi’nden karşıya geçtim ve Viyana Doğa Tarihi Müzesi’nin bulunduğu meydana geldim. Müze, 8000 küsür metrekarelik bir alanda yer almaktadır. Sanki bir üniversitenin kampüsü gibi. 1890 yılında ziyarete açılan müzede mineraller, Dünya’ya bir şekilde ulaşan göktaşları, böceklerden dinazorlara kadar birçok hayvanın ve nesli tükenen hayvanların iskelet veya maketleri bulunmaktadır. Benim gibi doğa, arkeoloji, uzay gibi ilgi alanları olan kişiler için mutlaka ziyaret edilmesi gereken bir yer, ama günübirlik Viyana ziyaretimin son saatlerine yaklaştığım için müzenin içine giremedim.

It was my last two hours in Vienna. I left the area where the Vienna Natural History Museum was located and quickly started walking towards left on Burgring Street. I came to the Austrian Parliament Building, which is located on the Ringstraße Boulevard, a 10-minute walk from the Vienna Natural History Museum. If it weren’t a parliament building, I would have called it a Greek Temple. At the entrance of the parliament building, there is a statue of the Greek goddess Athena holding Nike. There are the Pallas Athena fountains in the right and left of this statue. These fountains symbolized the lands of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. A state’s parliament building could only be this much magnificent. I was lucky to take photos because the sun was setting.

Viyana’daki son iki saatimdi. Viyana Doğa Tarihi Müzesi’nin bulunduğu alandan ayrıldım ve hızlıca Burgring Caddesi’nden sola tarafa doğru yürümeye başladım. Viyana Doğa Tarihi Müzesi’ne 10 dakika yürüme mesafesinde olan ve Ringstraße Bulvarı’nda bulunan Avusturya Parlemento Binası’na geldim. Hani bir parlemento binası olmasa buraya bir Yunan Tapınağı derdim. Parlemento binasının girişinde Yunan tanrısı Athena’nın elinde Nike olan heykeli bulunmaktadır. Bu heykelin sağında ve solunda Pallas Athena çeşmeleri var. Bu çeşmeler Avusturya-Macaristan İmparatorluğunun topraklarını simgeliyormuş. Bir devletin parlemento binası ancak bu kadar görkemli olabilirdi. Ben güneşin batımına denk geldiği için fotoğraf çekerken şanslıydım.

Austrian Parliament Building

I saw a Gothic building behind the parliament building. I started walking towards it. After about five minutes, I came to this beautiful neo-Gothic building with trees and a park in front. The Vienna City Hall was built in the 1870s, designed by architect Friedrich Schmidt. Today, the building actively serves the mayor of Vienna and the city council members.

Parlemento binasının olduğu yerin arkasında gothic yapıda bir bina gördüm. Oraya doğru yürümeye başladım. Yaklaşık beş dakika sonra önünde ağaçlar ve parkın olduğu bu güzel neo-gothik yapının yanına gelmiştim. Viyana Belediye Binası 1870’li yıllarda, mimar Friedrich Schmidt’in tasarımı ile yapılmıştır. Bina günümüzde aktif olarak Viyana belediye başkanına ve belediye meclis üyelerine hizmet etmektedir.

There was an hour left until the bus departure. Not wasting any time, I went to Stephansplatz, the metro stop that goes to Vienna Erdberg International Bus Terminal. Where the metro stop is, there was a structure that I should have seen when I first arrived in Vienna. It is St. Stephen's Cathedral. I can say that Stephansplatz, where the cathedral is located, is the liveliest and the most central place in Vienna. After taking photos of the cathedral for 10 minutes, I had to get on the metro and go to the bus terminal.

Otobüsün hareket saatine artık bir saat kalmıştı. Zaman kaybetmeden Viyana Erdberg Uluslararsı Otobüs Terminali’ne giden metro durağına, Stephansplatz’a gittim. Metro durağının olduğu yerde, belki de Viyana ilk geldiğimde görmem gereken bir yapıt vardı. Aziz Stefan Katedrali. Katedral’in bulunduğu Stephansplatz için Viyana’nın en canlı ve merkezi yeridir diyebilirim. 10 dakika katedralin fotoğraflarını çektikten sonra metroya binerek otobüs terminaline gitmek zorunda kaldım.

Vienna is definitely not a city to visit in one day. It is a city that needs to be spent for at least two or three days. Nevertheless, I think I visited many places in a five-hour period, but I could not enter any of these magnificent buildings and monuments. In short, I could not get enough of Vienna, which means I will come back to Vienna again :)

Viyana kesinlikle günübirlik gezilecek bir şehir değildir. En az iki veya üç gün doya doya gezilmesi gereken bir şehirdir. Ben yine de beş saatlik bir sürede birçok yer gezdiğimi düşünüyorum, ama bu mükemmel binalar ve yapıtların hiçbirinin içine giremedim. Kısacası Viyana’ya doyamadım, bu demek oluyor ki Viyana’ya tekrar geleceğim : )

I got on the bus at the scheduled time at Vienna Erdberg International Bus Terminal and arrived in Prague four hours later at around 23:00. I had a return flight the next day. I was curious about how Prague Old City looked at night, so I went to Prague Old Town Square and took a few photos before going to the hotel.

Viyana Erdberg Uluslararsı Otobüs Terminali’nde plananan saatte otobüse bindim ve dört saat sonra saat 23:00 gibi Prag’a vardım. Ertesi gün dönüş yolculuğum vardı. Geceleyin Prag Eski Şehrin nasıl göründüğünü merak ettim ve otele gitmeden Prag Eski Şehir Meydanı’na gelerek birkaç fotoğraf çektim.
