My Aegean Tour - Part 1: Ephesus Ancient City, Selçuk, İzmir [ENG-TUR]

For some time now, I wanted to collect my thoughts, experiences and photos and write this long post series consisting of several chapters about my Aegean tour in 2021. Finally, I completed writing my posts and ready to share. I think to share one post each week. I hope you will enjoy reading them, thanks in advance.

Bugün uzun bir gezi yazısı serisine başlıyorum. Bir süredir aklımdakileri, tecrübelerimi ve fotoğrafları toparlayıp 2021 yılında yaptığım Ege turuyla ilgili birkaç bölümden oluşan bu uzun yazı serisini yazmak istiyordum. Nihayet yazılarımı tamamladım ve paylaşmaya hazırım. Her hafta bir yazı paylaşmayı düşünüyorum. Umarım beğenerek okursunuz, şimdiden teşekkürler.

From the beginning of the pandemic until 2023, I had taken domestic vacations towards end of the summer season due to the pandemic and economic crisis. I don't like the vacation format that goes between hotel, sea and foods anyway. I want to explore new places as much as possible. Last year, I realized the Aegean tour that I had planned long before. I could not travel all over the Aegean, but in this travel post series, I write about the places I could visit in detail in the Aegean. The first of those is Ephesus Ancient City, which is located in Selçuk district of İzmir province.

Pandeminin başlangıcından 2023 yılına kadar, pandemi ve ekonomik kriz nedeniyle tatile yurtiçinde yaz sezonu sonlarına doğru çıkıyordum. Zaten otel deniz ve yemek arasında geçip giden tatil şeklini sevmiyorum. Mümkün olduğunca yeni yerler keşfetmek istiyorum. Geçen yıl uzun zamandır yapmayı planladığım Ege turunu gerçekleştirdim. Ege’nin her yerini gezemedim ama bu gezi yazısı serisinde sizlere Ege’de detaylı gezebildiğim yerlerden bahsedeceğim. Bunlardan birincisi İzmir ilinin Selçuk ilçesinde bulunan Efes Antik Kenti’dir.

We two friends decided to go on a one-week Aegean tour in the last week of September. We were to rent a caravan at first, but we couldn't find a caravan that was budget-friendly and wouldn't let us down. We wanted to do this tour with my friend’s personal car. We set off at 6 am on Sunday. After about 3 hours of driving, we took a break in Balıkesir and had breakfast there. The weather in Balıkesir was a bit cloudy and cold. After breakfast, we continued on our way at full speed. When we arrived in Izmir, the sun showed itself and the weather became quite warm. Following the İzmir-Aydın highway, we turned right at the Ephesus-Selçuk junction.

Eylül’ün son haftası, iki arkadaş, 1 haftalık Ege turuna çıkmaya karar verdik. Önce karavan kiralayacaktık ama bütçemize uygun ve bizi yarı yolda bırakmayacak bir karavan bulamadık. Biz de arkadaşımın şahsi arabasıyla bu turu yapmak istedik. Pazar sabah 6 gibi yola çıktık. Yaklaşık 3 saatlik yolcuğulun ardından Balıkesir’de mola verdik ve kahvaltı yaptık. Balıkesir’de hava biraz kapalı ve soğuktu. Kahvaltıdan sonra tam gaz yolumuza devam ettik. İzmir’e vardığımızda güneş kendini göstermiş ve hava bayağı ısınmıştı. İzmir-Aydın otobanından devam ederek Efes-Selçuk ayrımından girdik.

We arrived in Selçuk around three o'clock. We reached Ephesus Ancient City after 15-20 minutes drive by following the signs from the city center of Selçuk. There is a paid parking lot at the entrance of the Ephesus Ancient City. In addition to tourist groups, there were also those who come here with their personal cars like us. There are also shops at the entrance that sell items you would buy as souvenirs on a trip. Although it was the end of the season, the entrance to Ephesus Ancient City was very crowded. Fortunately, we quickly passed through the turnstiles without waiting thanks to our museum cards. As I mentioned in Aspendos Ancient City post, I love to visit ancient cities, explore them and touch those marble structures. I had never been to Ephesus Ancient City before, so I was very happy to visit a new ancient city.

Saat üç gibi Selçuk’a varmıştık. Selçuk şehir merkezinden tabelaları takip ederek 15-20 dakika sonra Efes Antik Kenti’ne ulaştık. Efes Antik Kenti’nin girişinde ücretli bir otopark bulunuyor. Buraya turist kafilelerinin yanısıra bizim gibi şahsi arabalarıyla gelenler de vardı. Girişte ayrıca bir gezide hatıra olarak alacağınız eşyaları satan dükkanlar da bulunmaktadır. Sezon sonu olmasına karşın Efes Antik Kenti’nin girişi çok kalabalıktı. Neyse ki müze kartlarımız sayesinde beklemeden turnikelerden çabucak geçtik. Aspendos Antik Kenti yazımda da bahsettiğim gibi antik kentleri gezmeyi, incelemeyi ve o mermer yapılara dokunmayı çok seviyorum. Daha önce Efes Antik Kenti’ne hiç gelmemiştim, bu nedenle yeni bir antik kent gezeceğim için çok mutluydum.

A beautiful tree-lined road welcomes you at the entrance of Ephesus Ancient City. After a little moving on, you reach the marble road. This marble road is known as Harbor Street. There is the gigantic Ephesus Ancient Theater on the left side of the marble road. The right side of the marble road leads to the port that existed once upon a time. We continued walking towards Curetes Street by the side of ancient theatre.

Efes Antik Kenti’nin girişinde sizi çok güzel bir ağaçlı yol karşılıyor. Biraz ilerledikten sonra mermerli yola çıkıyorsunuz. Bu mermerli yol Liman Caddesi olarak biliniyor. Mermerli yolun sol tarafında devasa Efes Antik Tiyatrosu bulunuyor. Mermerli yolun sağ tarafı ise bir zamanlar var olan limana gidiyor. Biz antik tiyatro tarafından Kuretler Caddesine doğru yürümeye devam ettik.

There were Theater Gymnasium and Agora on the right of us.

There is the Library of Celsus on the right, at the end of the marble street. In my opinion, the library is one of the two most prominent structures of the ancient city, which has survived until now with its architecture and columns. Next to the library, there is also the south gate of Agora. This part of the ancient city may be the most beautiful place to take or be photographed. Domestic and foreign tourists had already started the competition to take photo here. This place was as crowded as the entrance of the ancient city. It was even possible to see people from Latin America.

Mermer caddenin sonunda, sağ tarafta Celcus Kütüphanesi bulunmaktadır. Bence kütüphane gerek mimarisi, gerekse sütunları ile bu zamana kadar ayakta kalmış, antik kentin en göze çarpan iki yapısından biridir. Kütüphanenin yanında ayrıca Agora Güney kapısı var. Antik kentin bu kısmı, fotoğraf çekilecek ya da çektirilecek en güzel yeri olabilir. Zaten yerli ve yabancı turistler burda fotoğraf çekme yarışına girmişti. Burası da en az antik kentin girişi kadar kalabalıktı. Latin Amerika’dan gelen insanları bile görmek mümkündü.

Having taken some photos here, we went up from the marble road towards Curetes Street. On this street are the Temple of Hadrian, the Fountain of Trajan, the Gate of Heracles and the Temple of Dominatus in order.

Burada biraz fotoğraf çektikten sonra mermerli yoldan yukarıya Kuretler Caddesi’ne doğru çıktık. Bu caddenin üstünde sırasıyla Hadrian Tapınağı, Traianus Çeşmesi, Herakles Kapısı ve Dominatus Tapınağı bulunmaktadır.

Curetes Street goes up to the hill. It was the State Agora that caught my eye here. Except this, there are other structures, but we didn’t stay here and went back down the street. Our last stop before leaving was the amphitheater, the largest building in the ancient city. We took many pictures here. You can find information about the Ancient City of Ephesus here.

Kuretler Caddesi tepeye kadar çıkıyor. Burda benim gözüme çarpan Devlet Agorası oldu. Bunun dışında başka yapılar da var ama biz burda fazla durmadan caddeden geri aşağı indik. Ayrılmadan önce son durağımız, antik kenttin en büyük yapısı olan amfitiyatro oldu. Burda birçok resim çektik. Efes Antik Kenti ile ilgili bilgilere buradan ulaşabilirsiniz.
