Why I Resigned From a Teaching Job: Contest #251
This might sound absurd in the hearing of some people, especially people who are earnestly looking for jobs. It all happened after my National Youth service, as required by the government of my country that all graduates must embark on a National Youth service, serving their father’s land. After my service year, I began searching for jobs. In my country, there is a high level of unemployment. Many factors are responsible for this and I am not going to dive into that. I searched for a job and I was employed to teach in one of the private schools. It was in September, the beginning of a new academic session. So everything went on well.
The work environment was okay, although the salary was not encouraging, but I had to do it since no other job opportunities were forthcoming. I did my job diligently, and the school management was satisfied with my job.
Three months later, we began the terminal examination, and I gave out my questions and the examinations were given to the students, and they wrote. Some passed while some also failed. This is the beauty of examinations. Everyone cannot pass, nor can everyone fail. I did my best to teach the students effectively and efficiently. So I was satisfied with myself.
After I had marked the students' examination scripts, about 20% of the students failed. This didn't go well with the school management so they reached out to me to ensure that all the failed students pass. I was confused because it was against my principles. How do I pass students who have failed in their examination?
The school management insisted that I must ensure that no student fails, so in that case I must add up marks to the failed students for them to pass. I protested and told them that I can't do such a thing. I told them that such is against my principles, and not just my principles, but it is against ethics and morality. I told them that it's corruption and it has a way of affecting the educational standard of a country negatively.
As a result of this, I had to resign from the school.
I made the decision and I was proud of it.

Walking away from a teaching job because they demanded passing failing students even when the paycheck was thin and opportunities were scarce took real courage. You didn’t just resign, you protected your values and that kind of integrity speaks louder than any salary ever could.

Even me am proud of you ma, not so many people will do that, it's evidence what you represent and what your values are, it's not all about the money, but conscience and the good of even the students. A better job will come, at least your conscience is clear
