How a family member ruined my business

It was after I closed down the business that I recalled the lecture I had when I was in school. It was a 200-level course on entrepreneurship. The lecturer told us that we should not involve our family members in our business especially if we have an extended family member living with us. Rather we should monitor our business keenly. It didn't make any sense to me at that time.

Five years later, I had some money to begin a business, a provision store. I paid for a shop at a strategic position and got all the necessary items. I knew that the work would be hectic for me so I decided to invite my cousin to stay with me and to also help me out in looking after the store whenever I am away.

I didn't know that it would be a great mistake. She started stealing money, and will be eating some goods from the store whenever I am not around. This is the girl whom I sat down and told about the rudiments of the business. I promised her that I would take good care of her, if she remains truthful.

Oblivious to me, the girl was out to destroy me. Most times, she will sell some goods, and I won't find the money, and when you ask her, she will say she doesn't have a clue about it. I realised that she steals money from the shop when I stumbled on some money in her bag. I asked her where she got the money. She told me it was her friend who gave her the money, so I told her to let me know. I also realised that she will be taking out goods and leaving them in the custody of her friends.

After some months, I was out of cash to sustain the business hence I folded up. This was one of the lessons I had to learn the hard way as an entrepreneur. Most times, it is better to employ a non-family member in your business than a family member.

A non-family member will stick to rules because he knows that if anything goes wrong, he will be held accountable and might be punished for any wrongdoing. Meanwhile, a family member will see it as their right to do whatever they like to the business

This experience might be of help to other entrepreneurs. If you must involve a family member in your business, do so with close monitoring and ensure that such a person thinks well of you and also understands how business is done. If not they will collapse your business.

Fue después de cerrar el negocio cuando recordé la clase que tuve cuando estaba en la escuela. Era un curso de nivel 200 sobre emprendimiento. El profesor nos dijo que no debíamos involucrar a nuestros familiares en nuestro negocio, especialmente si teníamos algún pariente lejano viviendo con nosotros. Más bien, debíamos supervisar nuestro negocio con atención. En aquel momento, no le encontré ningún sentido.

Cinco años más tarde, tenía algo de dinero para montar un negocio, una tienda de comestibles. Alquilé un local en una ubicación estratégica y compré todo lo necesario. Sabía que el trabajo sería muy intenso, así que decidí invitar a mi prima a quedarse conmigo y ayudarme a cuidar de la tienda cuando yo no estuviera.

No sabía que sería un gran error. Empezó a robar dinero y a comer algunos productos de la tienda cuando yo no estaba. Se trata de la chica a la que senté y le enseñé los fundamentos del negocio. Le prometí que la cuidaría bien si se comportaba bien.

Sin que yo lo supiera, la chica estaba decidida a destruirme. La mayoría de las veces, vendía algunos productos y yo no encontraba el dinero, y cuando le preguntaba, me decía que no tenía ni idea. Me di cuenta de que robaba dinero de la tienda cuando encontré algo de dinero en su caja. Le pregunté de dónde lo había sacado. Me dijo que se lo había dado una amiga, así que le dije que me lo dijera. También me di cuenta de que sacaba productos y los dejaba al cuidado de sus amigos.

Después de unos meses, me quedé sin dinero para mantener el negocio, por lo que tuve que cerrarlo. Esta fue una de las lecciones que tuve que aprender por las malas como emprendedor. En la mayoría de los casos, es mejor contratar a alguien ajeno a la familia que a un familiar para tu negocio.

Una persona ajena a la familia se ajustará a las normas porque sabe que, si algo sale mal, se le considerará responsable y podría ser sancionado por cualquier irregularidad. Por su parte, un familiar considerará que tiene derecho a hacer lo que quiera con el negocio.

Esta experiencia puede ser de ayuda para otros emprendedores. Si tienes que involucrar a un familiar en tu negocio, hazlo bajo una estrecha supervisión y asegúrate de que esa persona te tiene en buena consideración y entiende cómo se hacen los negocios. De lo contrario, acabará arruinando tu negocio.
