The Towering Inferno" [1974] Movie Review ESP/ENG
Back in the 70's I remember seeing an action movie that shocked me so much that I remember it perfectly to this day, it was a blockbuster and if I remember correctly it was inspired by the construction of the twin towers in New York (who knew, right?) It was Hell in the Tower.
Por allá, por los años 70 recuerdo haber visto una película de acción que me impactó muchísimo hasta recordarla perfectamente el día de hoy, fue muy taquillera y si mal no recuerdo estuvo inspirada en la construcción de las torres gemelas de Nueva York (quién lo diría, ¿no?) Se trata de Infierno en la Torre.
In the film we see The Glass Tower, a building that ends up horribly burned by negligence of one of those responsible for its construction. There was great expectation for its inauguration, great personalities of the national and international Jet Set had been invited. Architecture and engineering would come together in this great social event. Doug Roberts (the chief architect) was the most enthusiastic of the construction team, as this was his great work with which he would be known, so he felt very proud. The large building housed apartments, presidential suits and huge pent houses, as well as professional offices and boutiques, and the chief electrician was also there bragging about his work to the media. The event began with great speeches, then the orchestra began to play while the waiters went from one side to the other bringing drinks and exquisite delicacies for the good taste of those present.
En la película vemos al The Glass Tower, un edificio que termina horriblemente quemado por negligencia de uno de los responsables de su construcción. Había gran expectativa por su inauguración, habían sido invitados grandes personalidades del Jet Set nacional e internacional. La arquitectura y la ingeniería se darían cita en este gran evento social. Doug Roberts (El arquitecto jefe) era el más entusiasmado del equipo constructor, pues esta era su gran obra con la que se daría a conocer, así que se sentía muy orgulloso. El gran edificio albergaba apartamentos, suits presidenciales y enromes pent houses, así como oficinas profesionales y boutiques, también estaba ahí el jefe de electricistas jactándose de su trabajo ante los medios de comunicación. El evento inició con grandes discursos, posteriormente la orquesta empezó a tocar mientras los meseros andaban de un lado a otro llevando tragos y exquisitas delicatesen para el buen gusto de los presentes.
At this point I remember the tension in the audience when the screen showed an older woman who was a resident of the building carrying her cat in her arms, she suddenly stopped when she smelled a strange odor, but then shrugged her shoulders and continued on her way. There was tension in this scene because you could sense in the air that something bad was about to happen or was already happening, and it's that magic that action movies from the 70s, 80s and 90s had, they knew how to keep the audience's attention. This tension was increasing as time goes by, even if they didn't show the real problem, but it was all due to the structure of the script and the excellent work of the actors, for example Doug was restless, a little impatient, but to top it off the lights began to flicker to add more tension to the scene, and then normalized, then once again people continued the evening as if nothing, until a loud explosion confirmed the suspicions, something was wrong. So this precisely, that mix between uncertainty and calm was like a roller coaster in which the audience could hardly get bored.
En este punto recuerdo la tensión que había en la audiencia cuando la pantalla mostró a una mujer mayor que era residente del edificio llevando a su gato en brazos, de pronto se detuvo al percibir un olor raro, pero después se encogió de hombros y continuó su camino. Había tensión en esta escena porque podías percibir en el aire que algo malo estaba a punto de suceder o ya estaba ocurriendo, y es esa magia que tenían las películas de acción de los años 70, 80 y 90, que sabían mantener la atención de la audiencia. Esta tensión se fue incrementando a medida que pasa el tiempo, aún y cuando no mostraban el verdadero problema, pero todo se debía a la estructura del guion y al excelente trabajo de los actores, por ejemplo Doug se mostraba inquieto, un poco impaciente, pero para colmo las luces empezaron a parpadear para añadir más tensión a la escena, y luego se normalizaron, entonces una vez más la gente continuó la velada como si nada, hasta que una fuerte explosión confirmó las sospechas, algo andaba mal. Así que esto precisamente, esa mezcla entre incertidumbre y calma era como una montaña rusa en la que difícilmente la audiencia podía aburrirse.
I felt part of the plot when the main character, guided by emergency lights, was going to the electrical room but he couldn't enter because the place was on fire. The crowd was running from one place to another and the elevators were not working (in some of them there were people trapped) and all this just added a touch more stress. Our protagonist argues with the chief electrician about what could have happened, but his explanations did not satisfy the chief architect. What actually happened is that all this was the product of an act of corruption that the protagonist discovered when he went back into the electrical room, where he noticed that the wires were not the right ones, then he understood that the chief engineer and his team had replaced the wires with lower numbered ones to save money that would later reach their own pockets. This brought a lot of realism to the plot because this kind of acts of correction are quite common when there are large-scale projects like this one and the consequences are dire.
Yo me sentí parte de la trama cuando el protagonista, guiado por luces de emergencia se dirigía al salón eléctrico ero no pudo entrar porque ese lugar estaba en llamas. La multitud corría de un lugar a otro y los ascensores no funcionaban (en algunos de ellos había gente atrapada) y todo esto solo le añade un toque más de estrés. Nuestro protagonista discute con el jefe de electricistas acerca de lo que pudo ocurrir, pero sus explicaciones no satisfacían al arquitecto jefe. Lo que sucedió en realidad es que todo eso era producto de un acto de corrupción que el protagonista descubrió al volver a internarse en la sala de electricidad, allí notó que los cables no eran los adecuados, entonces entendió que el ingeniero jefe y su equipo habían sustituido los cables por unos de menor numeración para ahorrar dinero que luego llegaría a sus propios bolsillos. Esto le aportó mucho realismo a la trama porque este tipo de actos de corrección son bastante comunes cuando hay proyectos de gran envergadura como este y las consecuencias son nefastas.
The height of tension comes when the film reaches its climax, the moment we see our hero shine on screen, and one of those that I suppose would have required the largest budget. I mean, the moment of the solution to the problem. It's true that previously we had practically indestructible heroes like Rocky or John McClane, whom you saw hitting or shooting left and right. However, Doug Roberts, while remaining an action hero, appeals to reason, knows how to think fast, and acts with his brain. So, his proposal to detonate the water tanks was the most appropriate, although it was still a dangerous option that required great maneuvers. One of the helicopters even crashed into the walls of the roof and crashed, falling resoundingly, which creates more uncertainty. Will they manage to extinguish the flames or not?
El momento álgido de tensión es cuando llega el climax de la película, el momento en que vemos brillar a nuestro héroe en pantalla y uno de los que supongo habría requerido la mayor parte del presupuesto, Me refiero al momento de la solución al problema. Es verdad que anteriormente teníamos héroes prácticamente indestructibles como Rocky o John McClane, a los que veías golpeando o disparando a diestra y siniestra, sin embargo Doug Roberts, sin dejar de ser un héroe de acción, apela a la razón, sabe pensar rápido, actúa con el cerebro, así que su propuesta de hacer estallar los tanques de agua fue la más acertada, aunque no por ello deja de ser una opción peligrosa que requirió de grandes maniobras, uno de los helicópteros incluso chocó contra los muros de la azotea y se estrelló cayendo estrepitosamente, lo cual provoca más incertidumbre ¿Conseguirán extinguir las llamas o no?.
That moment when Doug Roberts and the others have to tie themselves to the columns to withstand the force of the water from the tanks is brilliant. On one hand, you feel fear and uncertainty, but also hope because you know it's the only solution. When they finally managed to leave the building and looked up, they realized that all the product of months of work, effort, time, money, and dedication had ended up reduced to ashes, all because of corruption and the excessive ambition of human beings. But although many lost their lives (and we see it through a succession of images showing the bodies and the devastation), many others were saved. Dawn almost coincides with Doug's exit from the building, this as a cinematic memory to associate light with hope and the end of suffering. But right there, my favorite dialogue occurs when Doug approaches the fire chief and says, "If you want, make future buildings much bigger than this one, where the largest ladder barely reaches a quarter of the way." Doug just smiled back, agreeing with him completely.
En ese momento en el que Doug Roberts y los demás tienen que amarrarse a las columnas para poder soportar la fuerza del agua de los tanques es brillante, por una parte sientes miedo e incertidumbre pero también esperanzas porque sabes que es la única solución. Cuando finalmente pudieron salir del edificio y miraron hacia arriba se dieron cuenta que todo el producto de meses de trabajo, esfuerzo, tiempo, dinero y dedicación habían terminado reducidos a cenizas, y todo por culpa de la corrupción, de la ambición desmedida del ser humano, pero aunque muchos perdieron la vida (y lo vemos a través de una secesion de imagenes que muestran los cuerpos y la devacle) muchos otros pudieron salvarse. El amanecer casi coincide con la salida de Doug del edificio, esto como un recuerso cinematográfico para asociar la luz con la esperanza y el final del sufrimiento, pero justo allí se da mi diálogo favorito cuando Doug se acerca al jefe de bomberos y le dice "Si quieren hagan los futuros edificios mucho más grandes que este, donde la escalera más grande apenas llega a una cuarta parte" Doug solo correspondió la sonrisa, dándole la razón absoluta
The film helps reinforce all of human fears about natural disasters or disasters caused by human error. It's clear that the budget used for this production is enormous, not only because of the large number of extras, but also because of the special effects, which were so well done for the time (1974). In fact, the film received 8 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.
la película ayuda a reforzar todos los miedos del ser humano a las catástrofes naturales o provocadas por errores humanos. Se nota que el presupuesto que usaron en esta producción es enorme, no solo por la gran cantidad de extras, sino por lo efectos especiales tan bien logrados para la época (1974) De hecho la película recibió 8 nominaciones al Oscar, incluyendo mejor película
