Today I bring for you a work that has become over the years a true classic of English literature, but which I had not had the opportunity to read until now that, in my retirement years I dedicate myself to acquire and read books, some in digital format, like this one, and I confess that I have spent long moments of recreation immersed in reading. This particular book might seem to be a work of mystery and even horror in some scenes, but the truth is that it has a lot of depth, especially through its main character. But now without further ado I invite you to read this post to learn more about it in addition to my personal opinion, of course.

Hoy traigo para ustedes una obra que se ha convertido con el paso de los años en un verdadero clásico de la literatura inglesa, pero al que yo no había tenido la oportunidad de leer hasta ahora que, en mis años de jubilación me dedico a adquirir y leer libros, algunos en formato digital, como este, y les confieso que he pasado largos ratos de esparcimiento sumergido en la lectura. Este libro en particular podría parecer una obra de misterio y hasta terror en algunas escenas, pero la verdad es que tiene mucha profundidad, sobre todo a través de su personaje principal. Pero ahora sin más dilación los invito a leer este post para conozcan más al respecto además de mi opinión personal, desde luego.

Dorian Gray is a very attractive young man who loves to have fun with everything that the Victorian panorama offers, at a certain point the young man meets a talented painter named Basil Hallward who proposes to make him a portrait, since he is struck by the masculine beauty of the boy. However, influenced by the hedonistic ideas of Lord Henry Wotton Dorian does not want an ordinary portrait to be made but a very special one, which has the ability to age in place, because he wants to be eternally young and attractive, thus, surprisingly the painter achieves this curious and extraordinary goal, so as the years pass Dorian retains its freshness while his portrait ages to the point where it ends up relegated to the cold corner of a room.

Dorian Gray es un joven muy atractivo que ama divertirse con todo lo que ofrece el panorama victoriano, en cierto punto el joven conoce a un talentoso pintor llamado Basil Hallward quien le propone hacerle un retrato, ya que le llama la atención la belleza masculina del muchacho. Sin embargo, influenciado por las ideas hedonistas de Lord Henry Wotton Dorian no desea que se haga un retrato ordinario sino uno muy especial, que tenga la capacidad de envejecer en su lugar, porque él desea ser eternamente joven y atractivo, de esta manera, sorpresivamente el pintor logra ese curioso y extraordinario objetivo, por lo tanto a medida que los años pasan Dorian conserva su lozanía mientras que su retrato envejece hasta el punto en que termina relegado en el frio rincón de una habitación.

The novel compiles several interesting themes such as art, beauty, morality and above all hedonism. At the beginning Dorian is a beautiful but innocent young man, he loves life and is carried away by his feelings, he even falls in love with a beautiful theater actress without caring about where she comes from, he just wants to live fully, but when he meets Lord Henry Wotton and he begins to talk to him about the hypocrisy of society and the pleasures of life, Dorian's ideas are distorted, he becomes more and more aware of his own beauty and what he can get with it, he begins to give more importance to ephemeral pleasures and banalities, he prioritizes them over feelings and values such as morality, decency and honesty, for him his physical beauty and wealth is what really matters, but here some questions arise What happens to the portrait? Does it age and deform with the passage of time or is it simply a reflection of Dorian Gray's decadence?

La novela compila varios temas interesantes como lo son el arte, la belleza, la moralidad y sobre todo el hedonismo. Al inicio Dorian es un joven hermoso pero inocente, ama la vida y se deja llevar por sus sentimientos, incluso se enamora de una bella actriz de teatro sin importarle su procedencia, tan solo desea vivir plenamente, pero cuando conoce a Lord Henry Wotton y este comienza a hablarle sobre la hipocresía de la sociedad y los placeres de la vida, las ideas de Dorian se van distorsionando, se hace cada vez más consciente de su propia belleza y lo que puede obtener con ella, comienza a darle una mayor importancia a los placeres efímeros y a las banalidades, los prioriza por encima de los sentimientos y valores como la moralidad, la decencia y la honestidad, para él su belleza física y su riqueza es lo que verdaderamente importa, pero aquí surgen algunas preguntas ¿Qué le ocurre al retrato? ¿Envejece y se deforma con el paso del tiempo o simplemente es un reflejo de la decadencia de Dorian Gray?

I believe that one of the most valuable lessons of this book is that physical beauty does not guarantee virtue and inner peace. Beauty, wealth and the pleasures of life are not exclusively bad things, but they do become something perverse when human beings fall into excesses and begin to lose their identity, to not accept themselves as they are, to disassociate themselves from their own feelings or emotions, when they allow external ideas to contaminate their own, when human beings become selfish and allow themselves to be seduced by unhealthy ideas, they become horrible and perverse human beings (like the Dorian in the portrait).

Considero que una de las lecciones más valiosas de ese libro es que la belleza física no garantiza la virtud y la paz interior. La belleza, la riqueza y los placeres de la vida no son elementos exclusivamente algo malo, pero sí llegan a convertirse en algo perverso cuando los seres humanos caen en los excesos y comienzan a perder su identidad, a no aceptarse tal como son, a desvincularse de sus propios sentimientos o emociones, cuando permiten que ideas externas contaminen las suyas, cuando el ser humano se vuelve egoísta y se deja seducir por ideas malsanas se vuelve un ser humano horrible y perverso (como el Dorian del retrato)

I also believe that Oscar Wilde (the author of the book) wanted to reflect in a certain way the hypocrisy of the time he lived in (the Victorian era) where society in general, but especially the bourgeoisie lived a kind of double life, on the one hand they showed an impeccable face with an impeccable behavior, "excellent citizens, who were icons of morality and good manners" but when they had the opportunity they frequented brothels, mistreated the most vulnerable and indulged in a life of excess where alcohol and especially opium reigned, where they dared to do what they would never have done in public. The ending is very sobering, the perfect example of poetic justice because it shows us that we cannot avoid karma, in the end life takes its toll for the acts committed, whether good or bad.

También considero que Oscar Wilde (El autor del libro) quiso reflejar de cierta manera la hipocresía de la época que vivía (La época victoriana) donde la sociedad en general, pero en especial la burguesía vivía una especie de doble vida, por un lado mostraban un rostro impecable con un comportamiento intachable, "excelentes ciudadanos, que eran ícono de moralidad y buenas costumbres" pero cuando tenían la oportunidad frecuentaban burdeles, maltrataban a los más vulnerables y se entregaban a una vida de excesos donde reinaba el alcohol y sobre todo el opio, donde se atrevían a hacer lo que nunca hubiesen hecho en público. El final es muy aleccionador, el perfecto ejemplo de justicia poética porque nos demuestra que no podemos evitar el karma, al final la vida pasa factura por los actos cometidos, sean buenos o malos.
