The Amytiville Horror [Review] ESP/ENG
Although I'm not a fan of the horror genre, at some point one of these books came into my hands, and after seeing my wife and daughters raving about it, I must confess that I was curious, so I took it off the bookshelf and started reading. So I have to admit that this book completely captivated me. I'm referring to The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson. What caught my attention most of all was that it's based on real-life events, set in one of the most haunted houses in the world.
A pesar de que yo no soy asiduo al genero terror, en cierto punto un libro de estos llegó a mis manos y luego de ver que mi esposa e hijas lo comentaban debo confesar que me ganó la curiosidad, así que lo tomé del estante de los libros y comencé a leerlos. así que tengo que admitir que la lectura me atrapó por completo. Me refiero a Horror en Amityville, de Jay Anson. Lo que llamó mi atención sobre todo es que está basado en hechos de la vida real, en una de las casas más embrujadas del mundo.
The story basically tells the story of a family (the Lutzes) who moves to the house at number 12 Ocean Avenue in Long Island. It was a huge house, three stories, beautiful and amazingly cheap, in fact it was so cheap that George (the father) asks the real estate agent why and she answers that it is because a terrible murder had occurred in the house when the Defeo family lived there, since the eldest son annihilated them all with a shotgun while they slept, but since George did not consider himself superstitious he did not care about that and closed the deal buying the house, however a series of paranormal events that began slightly and increased considerably caused the family to only last 28 days in the house until they fled in terror.
La historia básicamente narra la historia de una familia (los Lutz) que se muda a la casa número 12 de Ocean Avenue en Long Island. Era una casa enorme, de tres pisos, preciosa y asombrosamente barata, de hecho era tan barata que George (el padre) pregunta a la agente de bienes raíces a qué se debe y ella responde que se debe a que en la casa había ocurrido un terrible asesinato cuando allí vivía la familia Defeo, ya que el hijo mayor los aniquiló a todos con una escopeta mientras dormían, pero como George no se consideraba supersticioso no le importó eso y cerró el trato comprando la casa, sin embargo una serie de hechos paranormales que comenzaron ligeros y se fueron incrementando considerablemente provocaron que la familia solo durara 28 días en la casa hasta que salieron huyendo despavoridos.
The story in this book is so well told and the atmosphere is so immersive that many times I found myself quickly putting my feet up on the bed for fear that someone or something would grab them, I know, I know it sounds silly but I really got to feel scared since the author knows very well how to capture your attention and narrate paranormal events in a very realistic way, in fact one of the scenes that impacted me the most was precisely that one, where George is sitting on his bed with his feet on the floor and something grabs his ankles, but I also found the scenes where Jodi appeared, who was a red-eyed pig who only spoke to Missy (the youngest in the family), chilling.
La historia de este libro está tan bien narrada y el ambiente es tan inmersivo que muchas veces yo me descubría a mi mismo subiendo los pies rápidamente a la cama por temor de que alguien o algo me los agarrara, lo sé, sé que suena tonto pero de verdad llegué a sentir miedo ya que el autor sabe muy bien como capturar tu atención y narrar de una forma muy realista hechos paranormales, de hecho una de las escenas que más me impactó fue precisamente esa, donde George está sentado en su cama con los pies en el suelo y algo le agarra los tobillos, pero también me parecieron escalofriantes las escenas donde aparecía Jodi, quien era un cerdo de ojos rojos que solo hablaba con Missy (la más pequeña de la familia)
It doesn't matter if the story is real or not, if the author only based the Defeo family's crime on a fantasy story to generate income, that becomes secondary when you're reading the book because the author is very skillful in his narrative and makes you empathize with the characters, since it's inevitable to put yourself in their shoes. In fact, the moment they enter the house, you can almost feel the tension. You know something isn't right, perhaps because of the previous history behind it, but you undoubtedly feel repulsed, no matter how beautiful the place may be.
Da igual si la historia es real o no, si el autor solo se basó en el crimen de la familia Defeo para generar ingresos con una historia fantástica, eso pasa a un segundo plano cuando estás leyendo el libro porque el autor es muy hábil en su narrativa y te hace empatizar con los personajes, ya que es inevitable ponerse en su lugar. De hecho en el instante en que ellos entran a la casa casi puedes sentir la tensión, sabes que algo no anda bien, quizá por la historia previa que tiene, pero indudablemente sientes rechazo, sin importar cuan hermoso puede ser ese lugar.
It's the only book I've read of this genre, and I honestly tell you it's not for sensitive people. However, the story covers many nuances besides horror. It also speaks to the value of family and how important it is when facing problems together because it's the source of mental and spiritual strength. The book isn't about the typical battle between good and evil because we hardly ever see the family fight against paranormal events. But it does show you how dangerous evil can be when it's ignored, but especially when we ignore God as our main guardian and guide.
Ha sido el único libro que he leído de este genero y honestamente les digo que no es para personas sensibles, sin embargo la historia abarca muchos matices además del horror, también nos habla del valor que tiene la familia y cuan importante es a la hora de afrontar problemas juntos porque es el origen de la fuerza mental y espiritual. El libro no trata sobre la típica batalla entre el bien y el mal porque de hecho casi no vemos a la familia combatir contra los hechos paranormales, pero sí te muestra cuan peligroso puede llegar a ser el mal cuando se le ignora, pero sobre todo cuando ignoramos a Dios como nuestro principal guardián y guía.
