I'd always wanted to read this book because I know it's a classic of English literature, and I enjoy reading classics to see what makes them endure. But I also became curious after watching a Brazilian series with my family that's based on several of Jane Austen's novels, and of course, Pride and Prejudice was included. So I got hold of a dusty copy I found in some boxes stored at my house in the countryside and started reading.
Desde hace tiempo siempre quise leer esta obra porque sé que es un clásico de la literatura inglesa y me gusta leer clásicos para ver que es lo que los hace perdurar en el tiempo, per también sentí curiosidad luego de ver con mi familia una serie brasileña que está basada en varias de las novelas de Jane Austen y desde luego que Orgullo y prejuicio estaba incluida. De modo que me hice con un ejemplar polvoriento que encontré en algunas cajas que estaban guardadas en la casa que tengo en el pueblo y comencé a leer.
The Bennet family consists of a married couple with several young daughters of marriageable age, so Mrs. Bennet wastes no time when she sees a potential suitor from a good family arrive. That's what she raised her daughters for, so when young bachelors come to the area, she is very excited. However, Elizabeth Bennet is very different from what her mother and society expect of a woman. She doesn't dream exclusively of getting married; she expects much more from life, and this somewhat annoys Mr. Darcy, who is very prejudiced and arrogant. So at first, there is a lot of tension and antipathy between them, but time and circumstances gradually shape their characters, teaching them valuable lessons.
La familia Bennet consta de un matrimonio con varias hijas jóvenes en edad de casarse, así que la señora Bennet no pierde tiempo cada vez que ve llegar algún posible pretendiente de buena familia, para eso educó a sus hijas, así que cuando llegan jóvenes solteros a la zona ella se ilusiona mucho, sin embargo, Elizabeth Bennet es muy diferente a lo que su madre y la sociedad entera esperan de una mujer, ella no sueña exclusivamente con casarse, espera mucho más de la vida, y esto hace enojar un poco al señor Darcy quien es muy prejuicioso y arrogante, así que al inicio entre ambos hay mucha tensión y antipatía, pero el tiempo y las circunstancia van moldeando el carácter de ambos, enseñándoles valiosas lecciones.
If there's one thing I truly enjoyed about this novel, it's that it's not your typical romance novel. It doesn't begin like a typical fairy tale, nor is it full of clichés. On the contrary, it starts with tension between the protagonists, something that has become very common nowadays and is, in fact, part of a genre that younger readers call "Enemy to Lovers." But at the time this work was written, it was quite a novelty. And not only that, but, as in all of Austen's novels, she raises her voice in protest against the hypocrisy and sexism of her time through the actions of her protagonists, often women of indomitable character, with strong convictions that defy the system.
Si hay algo que realmente disfruté de esta novela es que no es una novela de romance común, no comienza como el típico cuento de hadas ni está llena de clichés, todo lo contrario, comienza con tensión entre los protagonistas, algo que hoy en día se ha vuelto muy común y de hecho forma parte de un género que los lectores más jóvenes llaman "Enemy to lovers" pero en la época en la que fue escrita esta obra era toda una novedad, pero no solo eso, sino que al igual que en todas las novelas de Austen, ella alza su grito de protesta contra la hipocresía y machismo de su época a través de las acciones de sus protagonistas, a menudo mujeres de carácter indomable, con fuertes convicciones que desafían el sistema.
Although the central theme of the story is the complex relationship between the protagonists, Elizabeth and Darcy, the novel goes further, also exploring sisterly love and the importance of family. I particularly like the strong bond between Elizabeth and her sister Jane; they protect each other, but Elizabeth especially cares for Jane because she knows she is more sensitive. She defends Jane from others and doesn't allow anyone to question or mistreat her in any way.
A pesar de que el eje central de la historia es la compleja relación que hay entre los protagonistas, Elizabeth y Darcy, la obra va más allá y también pretende explorar el amor fraternal y la importancia de la familia. Me gusta mucho el fuerte vínculo que existe entre Elizabeth y su hermana Jane, ambas se protegen mutuamente, pero en especial Elizabeth cuida a Jane porque sabe que ella es más débil de carácter, la defiende de los demás y no permite que la cuestionen o maltraten de ningún modo.
The author not only criticizes the absurd conventions and hypocrisy of the era, as well as the bourgeoisie's custom of looking down on those they considered inferior simply for not having grand surnames, tempting dowries, or large acres of land, but she also explores the theme of marriage from different angles, for example, marriages motivated by financial interest, as in the case of Charlotte Lucas's marriage; marriages born from romantic and idyllic love, as in that of Jane and Bingley; but also marriages that arose from love, but were a feeling that emerged after a transformation, a love that matured and evolved, as happened with Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy.
La autora no solo critica los absurdos convencionalismos e hipocresía de la época, así como la costumbre de la burguesía de menospreciar a aquellos que consideraban inferiores solo por no tener apellidos rimbombantes, tentadoras dotes o grandes acres de tierra, sino que explora el tema del matrimonio desde ángulos diferentes, por ejemplo el que estaba motivado por un interés financiero como es el caso del matrimonio de Charlotte Lucas, el matrimonio que nació desde un amor romántico e idílico como en el de Jane y Bingley, pero también esa boda que surgió por amor pero fue un sentimiento que surgió luego de una transformación, un amor que maduró y evolucionó como sucedió con Elizabeth y el señor Darcy.
I truly enjoyed reading it, even though romance isn't exactly my favorite genre; however, it completely exceeded my expectations. That's all for my review today, but I hope we'll meet again sometime, God willing, to talk about other equally important and meaningful works.
De verdad que disfruté muchísimo leyéndolo, a pesar de que el romance no es precisamente mi género favorito, sin embargo superó por completo mis expectativas. Hasta aquí mi reseña de hoy pero espero que nos encontremos en otra ocasión, Dios mediante, para que hablemos sobre otras obras igualmente importantes y significativas.
