Pedro Páramo [Book Review] ESP/ENG
I recently had the opportunity to read this star novel by Mexican writer Juan Rulfo, Pedro Páramo, which was the subject of much discussion recently due to the adaptation made for the Netflix platform. However, I am one of those people who likes to read and analyze the original material first in order to have a point of comparison, so without hesitation I began to explore this fascinating universe.
Recientemente tuve la oportunidad de leer esta novela estrella del escritor mexicano Juan Rulfo, Pedro Páramo, de la cuál se estuvo hablando mucho hace poco tiempo a raíz de la adaptación que hicieron para la plataforma Netflix, sin embargo yo soy de esas personas a las que les gusta leer y analizar en primer lugar el material original para luego tener un punto de comparación, así que sin dudarlo comencé a explorar este fascinante universo.
Juan Preciado is a young man who, at the request of his mother on her deathbed, arrives in Comala, a lonely and depressing town, with the clear objective of finding his father, a man named Pedro Páramo. His goal was to take revenge for being abandoned. However, upon arriving in the town, Juan has a series of encounters, paranormal if you will, that somehow lead him to meet his father, so at this point the novel becomes timeless and increasingly interesting. And since the story is timeless, the plot is practically divided in two. On the one hand, we see Juan's story in the present, and on the other, we learn about Pedro Páramo himself, who is or was the village chief, a kind of feudal lord who kept everyone subjugated through fear and cruelty.
Juan Preciado es un joven que por petición de su madre en el lecho de muerte llega a Comala, un pueblo solitario y deprimente, con el certero objetivo de buscar a su padre, un tal Pedro Páramo. el objetivo era cobrar venganza por el abandono. Sin embargo al llegar al pueblo Juan tiene una serie de encuentros, si se quiere paranormales que de alguna manera lo llevan a conocer a su padre, así que la novela en este punto se vuelve atemporal y cada vez más interesante. Y ya que la historia es atemporal, la trama prácticamente se divide en dos, por un lado vamos viendo la historia de Juan en el presente, y por la otra vamos conociendo la del propio Pedro Páramo quién es o era el cacique del pueblo, una especie de señor Feudal que mantenía a todos sometidos a base de miedo y crueldad.
As the story progresses, Juan Preciado gradually fades into the background, becoming less prominent in the narrative while Pedro Páramo gains strength and takes center stage, allowing us to get to know him little by little. The jumps in time may seem frustrating at times or a little confusing at first, but I recommend reading the book very carefully and without distractions. In this way, as we progress through the book, it is as if we are putting together a puzzle that shapes the story and everything begins to make more sense.
A medida que la lectura avanza Juan Preciado va perdiendo protagonismo, de cierta forma se va diluyendo en la narrativa mientras Pedro Páramo cobra fuerza y lo releva en el protagonismo, lo cuál nos permite ir conociéndolo de forma paulatina. Los saltos temporales podrían parecer frustrantes en ocasiones o un poco confusos al inicio, pero recomiendo leer el libro con muchísima atención y sin distracciones, de esta manera, a medida que vamos avanzando en la lectura es como si armásemos un rompecabezas que le va dando forma a la historia y todo va cobrando más sentido
But in addition, something that many people who have not read the work are unaware of is that there is a great deal of magical realism, in the best style of García Márquez, because although he was the greatest exponent of this narrative style, he was not the only one. This makes the structure of the novel a little complex, especially for young readers or those without much experience with this type of narrative, but I feel that this element gives it a special touch. After all, in every remote Latin American village there is a great deal of magical realism that is experienced through its folklore, beliefs, and superstitions, so there are many scenes in this novel that catch the reader's attention and arouse curiosity, such as those where the dead, cold, return for their blankets, but in reality the whole village is full of souls in torment who constantly relive traumas and frustrations from which they cannot escape.
Pero además, algo que muchas personas que no han leído la obra ignoran, es que hay muchísimo realismo mágico, al mejor estilo de García Márquez, porque si bien el fue el mayor exponente de este estilo narrativo, no fue el único. De esta manera la estructura de la novela se vuelve un poco compleja, en especial para lectores jóvenes o sin mucha experiencia en este tipo de narrativa, pero siento que este elemento le da un toque especial, después de todo en cada pueblo recóndito latinoamericano hay muchísimo realismo mágico que se vive a través de su folclore, creencias y supersticiones, así que hay muchas escenas que llaman la atención y despiertan curiosidad en esta novela, como esas donde los muertos, llenos de frío, regresan por sus cobijas, pero en realidad todo el pueblo está lleno de almas en pena que constantemente reviven traumas y frustraciones de los que no pueden escapar.
I truly recommend reading this story and savoring all its nuances, rereading paragraphs, and as I mentioned, even after some time has passed. It's a novel that tells the story of an authoritarian man who, nevertheless, lives frustrated by a lack of love. It's about Juan Preciado's search for identity and the maelstrom of a town unable to leave behind its frustrations and experiences, eternally stuck in a loop. I hope you enjoyed my review. Es un libro al que recomiendo leer más de una vez, con muchísimo atención a los detalles porque en cada ocasión el lector encontrará algo distinto. Particularmente pienso que es una crítica al sistema, política y hasta la manera de actuar de la iglesia de la época post revolucionaria, elementos que favorecían el feudalismo, o mejor dicho, el Caciquismo, en el cuál todo giraba en torno a los más poderosos, vulnerando los derechos de los pobres y en especial los de las mujeres.

De verdad recomiendo leer esta historia y disfrutar de todos sus matices, repasar párrafos y tal como les dije, releerla incluso luego de un tiempo, una novela que narra la historia de un hombre autoritario que sin embargo vive frustrado por la falta de amor, es sobre la búsqueda de la identidad de Juan Preciado y la vorágine de un pueblo que no puede dejar atrás sus frustraciones y vivencias, estancado eternamente en un bucle. Vi la peli y me causó intriga porque ciertamente es muy abstracta, muy mágica; supuse que muchas cosas se aclaran con el libro.
