I Am Legend [Book Review] ESP/ENG
Before offering you my humble opinion about this work I would like to share with you an anecdote, and it is that while I was tidying up my room I started to take out several boxes that were in the closet to organize, then I found a small book with a title that caught my attention because it was the same of a very famous movie "I am Legend" it also caught my attention that it was among my books since I do not usually read anything of that style, and as much as I think about it I don't know how it got there, but I decided to keep it as a light reading for the afternoons, but when I started reading I couldn't stop, so I finished it in just one day, the truth is that it is very short, it only has 200 pages, so it can be read quite fast.
Antes de ofrecerles mi humilde opinión acerca de esta obra me gustaría compartir con ustedes una anécdota, y es que mientras ponía en orden mi habitación empecé a sacar varias cajas que estaban en el armario para organizar, entonces encontré un libro pequeño con un título que llamó mi atención porque era el mismo de una película muy famosa "Soy Leyenda" me llamó la atención además que estuviese entre mis libros ya que yo no suelo leer nada de ese estilo, y por más que le doy vueltas al asunto no sé como llegó allí, pero decidí conservarlo como algo de lectura ligera para las tardes, pero cuando empecé a leer ya no pude parar, así que lo terminé en solo un día, la verdad es que es muy corto, solo tiene 200 páginas, de modo que se puede leer bastante rápido.
Robert Neville is the only survivor of a bacteriological war, which destroyed humanity, although the rest of the humans are still around in a certain way, only that they appear only during the nights. As a result of that bacteriological war, two types of creatures emerged: the infected (who acquired the bacteria while alive) and the vampires, which are the dead who are resurrected because of that bacteria, although I would say that they have an extra level of aggressiveness if we compare them with the traditional vampires.
Robert Neville es el único sobreviviente de una guerra bacteriológica, la cuál destruyó a la humanidad, aunque el resto de los humanos de cierta manera continúan por allí, solo que surgen únicamente durante las noches. Como resultado de esa guerra bacteriológica surgieron dos tipos de criaturas: los infectados (que adquirieron la bacteria estando vivos) y los vampiros, que son los muertos que resucitan a causa de esa bacteria, aunque yo diría que estos tienen un nivel extra de agresividad si los comparamos con los vampiros tradicionales.
In his home Neville is equipped with everything he needs to live: water, food and even electricity, however his lifestyle is very monotonous, he always has the same routine: repairing the damage that vampires do to his house during the nights, accumulating some of the vampire corpses that are left in the street as a result of a fight, hanging strings of garlic, other times he goes to look for supplies and to kill some vampire that is sheltered in a house in a state of "hibernation" during the day. And in the evening Neville tries to relax drinking whiskey while listening to classical music, however this is sometimes difficult because he lives tormented by the memory of the death of his wife and daughter, and also because sometimes he can hear his neighbor (turned vampire) inciting him to go out in the street.
En su hogar Neville está equipado con todo lo que necesita para vivir: agua, comida e incluso electricidad, sin embargo su estilo de vida es muy monótono, siempre lleva la misma rutina: reparar los daños que los vampiros le hacen a su casa durante las noches, acumular algunos de los cadáveres de vampiros que quedan en la calle como resultado de alguna pelea, colgar ristras de ajo, otras veces se va a buscar provisiones y a matar a algún que otro vampiro que se encuentre refugiado en una casa en estado de "hibernación" durante el día. Y al caer la tarde Neville intenta relajarse bebiendo wiskey mientras escucha música clásica, sin embargo esto resulta difícil algunas veces debido a que vive atormentado por el recuerdo de la muerte de su esposa e hija, y también porque algunas veces puede escuchar a su vecino (devenido en vampiro) incitándolo a salir a la calle.
In my opinion I can tell you that despite being a book published in 1954, that is two years before my birth, it is not boring at all, in fact it kept me very animated reading, even though science fiction or horror have never been my favorite genres, but the reading is light and dynamic, and despite having a single central character is very well built, it's not hard at all to empathize with him and understand his loneliness, in fact he helps us to put in context what it means not to have someone to talk to, discuss strategies or look for a solution, nothing motivates him, except maybe the curiosity to know what kind of bacteria plagues humanity, that's why he scans books on anatomy, medicine and science in general.
En mi opinión les puedo decir que a pesar de ser un libro publicado en 1954, osea dos años antes de mi nacimiento, no resulta aburrido para nada, de hecho me mantuvo muy animado leyendo, incluso a pesar de que la ciencia ficción o el terror nunca han sido mis géneros favoritos, pero la lectura es ligera y dinámica, y pese a tener un único personaje central está muy bien construido, no cuesta para nada empatizar con él y comprender su soledad, de hecho él nos ayuda a poner en contexto acerca de lo que significa no tener a alguien con quien hablar, discutir estrategias o buscar una solución, nada lo motiva, excepto tal vez la curiosidad por saber qué clase de bacteria azota a la humanidad, por eso esculca libros de anatomía, medicina y ciencia en general.
It is a vampire story told in a different way, even though it has many classic elements such as garlic, mirrors and crosses. However although I really liked the story overall in my opinion the ending was disappointing because it doesn't offer a concrete closure, a definite answer as to what really happened or what will happen to Neville was he executed or not (but I won't say more in case you guys want to read the book).
Es una historia sobre vampiros contada de una forma diferente, aunque tenga muchos elementos clásicos como el ajo, los espejos y las cruces. No obstante aunque me gustó mucho la historia en general en mi opinión el final fue decepcionante porque no ofrece un cierre concreto, una respuesta definitiva sobre qué sucedió en realidad o qué sucederá con Neville ¿fue ejecutado o no? (pero no diré nada más en caso de que ustedes quieran leer el libro)
And this has been my review for today, I hope you liked it and it has encouraged you to read the book because even though it is old it is very good, in fact underrated, so much so that when you hear the title you think of the movie versions but I bet very few know that it comes from a novel. Una historia muy interesante, que tiene algunos puntos en común con la película, imagino que fue la fuente de inspiración y, luego, se cambiaron algunas partes.
El libro dista mucho de la película pero es mucho mejor. Estoy de acuerdo contigo con que el final fue decepcionante, sientes que Neville luchó por nada
Tremenda historia, tengo entendido que también hay una novela gráfica, me encantaría leerla. Buena reseña.
